Let Damn Tall Buildings’ New Version Of “Blue Bayou” Be Your Happy Place Amongst The Chaos Of The Day

In the middle of an original album meant to explore the chaos of life in the modern age, Brooklyn-based trio Damn Tall Buildings built in a reprieve; a rest stop for the soul in the form of a familiar face—musically speaking. Out October 24th, Damn Tall Buildings’ fourth full-length album, The Universe Is Hungry, explores the current-day world where technology overwhelms, memories blur, and meaning can feel elusive. Yet amid the uncertainty, the new album affirms a powerful truth: that love, laughter, music, and shared experience can anchor us all.

Right there in the middle of The Universe Is Hungry’s tracklist, between an Ethiopian song, emphasising the ancient ways we still use to celebrate humanity, and a song about vivid dreams sparking a shift in perspective while on a trip to Paris, the band slid in a delightful cover of Roy Orbison’s 1963 hit, “Blue Bayou.” “We included this classic because it speaks to so many of the themes running through the album: longing, memory, simplicity,” say Max Capistran, Sasha Dubyk, and Avery Ballotta—Damn Tall Buildings. “‘Blue Bayou’ is about wanting to return to a place where everything feels familiar, where life is quieter and more meaningful. It’s a beautiful moment of reflection and calm in the middle of the storm.” Damn Tall Buildings’ take on “Blue Bayou” falls a little more in line with Linda Ronstadt's now-definitive 1977 version, slowing the tempo down to a mellow groove and leaving ample room for Dubyk’s stellar vocal delivery amidst pedal steel and accordion breaks.
