Love Mischief Pushes Beyond Genre Boundaries on Debut Studio Album Dissolving Through the Rainbow Gate

For more than a decade, California’s eclectic powerhouse Love Mischief has quietly charted its own course through the modern jam band landscape, blending fearless improvisation, sophisticated musicianship, and an expansive musical vocabulary that reaches far beyond the genre’s traditional borders.

On its debut full-length studio album, Dissolving Through the Rainbow Gate, the Sacramento-based quintet delivers a sweeping nine-song, 67-minute sonic journey that moves effortlessly between funk, jazz fusion, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, blues, and moments of metal-infused intensity. The result is a record equally grounded in meticulous composition and wide-open exploration, capturing a band whose greatest strength lies in its refusal to stand still.

Released May 26, 2026, Dissolving Through the Rainbow Gate embraces both technical precision and spontaneous discovery in equal parts. Recorded at the renowned Q Division Studios in Somerville, Massachusetts, and mixed by engineer Jeremy Bernstein, the album was built using a collection of vintage instruments, classic amplifiers, and rare microphones, lending the record its rich, immersive analog character.

Founded in 2013 by guitarist and vocalist Brian Curtin, Love Mischief began as a deeply personal creative vehicle during a pivotal transition in the musician’s artistic life. Curtin and his brother, guitarist and vocalist Colin Curtin, are both graduates of the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Brian earned a dual degree in Professional Music and Music Marketing, while Colin earned a dual degree in Professional Music and Songwriting. That rare combination of artistic discipline, business acumen, and formal training continues to shape the band’s approach, from songwriting and arrangement to building a sustainable touring operation.

“Love Mischief started as a catch-all for the music I was writing during a period when I was transitioning from technical metal into the jamband world,” Brian Curtin explains. “The project was originally intended to be my solo project in which I hired musicians to fill the other positions in the band, but my move to Boston to attend Berklee made it difficult to establish a permanent band.”

He says the solo undertaking gradually evolved into four years of experimentation, lineup changes, and cross-country travel between California and Boston.

“From 2014 to 2018, I experimented with different versions of the project, including rotating musicians and maintaining separate East Coast and West Coast lineups, but I eventually realized that I needed a dedicated group of players to truly build the sound I was hearing in my head.”

Curtin returned home to Sacramento, determined to build a permanent ensemble capable of fully realizing the project’s expansive vision.

That vision crystallized in June of 2023 with the current lineup: Brian Curtin and Colin Curtin on guitars and vocals, keyboardist Neil Heaton, drummer Alan Gamboa, and bassist Bryant Whaley.

“It was at this point that it really felt like a solid touring outfit had come together. We’ve been going steadily ever since, and everyone is very committed to the band and the music.”

“The record is a sonic odyssey, for sure,” says Curtin. “It’s definitely got rock as the foundation, but moves between funk and jazz fusion, some sweetly played ballads, prog rock, and even some heavy metal à la Tool and Meshuggah.”

The album’s evocative title comes from a lyric in the penultimate track, “Jordan,” though its symbolism reaches deeper.

“The name ‘Dissolving Through the Rainbow Gate’ is something that came to me from that inexplicable source we might refer to as the Muse,” Curtin says. “For me, it evokes a portal. It represents a massive shift of some sort that marks a distinct change in outlook, perspective, consciousness. A true before and after.”

That spirit of transformation runs through the album’s emotional landscape, from the hopeful wanderlust of opening track “Traveler” to poignant tributes honoring departed friends and family, passages of mystical reflection, and moments of unrestrained musical celebration.

“There are songs on this record written for fallen friends and family, songs about the joy of being alive, songs pointing toward the mystical and psychedelic experience, songs of comfort, and even a zany, mostly instrumental song,” Curtin says. “I try to cover as much ground as possible while staying true to the vision and keeping everything cohesive within the context of the album.”

What ultimately distinguishes Love Mischief from many of its contemporaries is the extraordinary breadth of influence each member brings to the table. Beyond Curtin’s roots in technical metal and progressive music, the band’s collective influences span jazz fusion, classical music, hip hop, Latin music, R&B, indie rock, classic rock, and improvisational tradition.

“The thing that sets us apart from other jam bands is the diversity of musical background. Everyone in the band comes from pretty different musical interests and upbringings.”

Relix Magazine touted the band, saying it’s known for its “genre-bending performances and free-wheeling improvisation,” embracing “a deep respect for the musical wisdom of the iconic jambands” while bringing “a modern edge to a timeless sound.”
