There are songs that look backward just long enough to help us move forward. Matt Jones and The Bobs tap into that feeling with their new single and video, “Isn’t It Strange,” an Americana-meets-soulful folk-rock standout that pairs nostalgic storytelling with a hopeful sense of arrival.

Set against a backdrop of analog warmth and ’90s-tinged Americana, “Isn’t It Strange” is driven by bright rhythmic guitar, intimate vocals, and irresistible pedal steel as Matt Jones reflects on small-town memories, past loves, and the space between who he was and who he has become.

The accompanying video doubles as a love letter to Washington, D.C., using the Metro’s stark geometric stations as a metaphor for movement and self-discovery. It culminates in a bloom of cherry blossoms that underscores the song’s central message: even life’s strangest detours can lead somewhere unexpectedly good.

“It’s about waking up one day and recognizing that every messy, beautiful moment you lived through led you to a place where your world couldn’t be any better than it is right now,” says Jones.

Hailing from Southwest Virginia, Matt Jones and The Bobs create songs that feel like snapshots of real life, vividly capturing the raw essence of front porch conversations, long drives, and everything in between. Their sound draws from the storytelling lineage of John Prine and Jackson Browne, the roots-driven energy of The Avett Brothers and Old Crow Medicine Show, and the enduring spirit of The Band and Tom Petty, all filtered through a ’90s upbringing.

“Isn’t It Strange” is the third single from the band’s forthcoming full-length project due this summer. Since reemerging, the group has already amassed hundreds of thousands of views and streams, signaling a fast-growing audience for their heartfelt, roots-driven sound.

Matt Jones and The Bobs first formed in 2011 while attending Radford University. Their debut album, Brother’s Hymn, arrived in 2014 while they were still in college, earning a loyal following for honest songwriting and gritty performances centered on small-town life, love, loss, and growing pains.

After stepping away in 2015 to pursue individual careers and life paths, the band reunited in 2024 with renewed purpose. While their foundation in Americana, folk, and Southern rock remains intact, this new chapter adds touches of grunge grit, broader instrumentation, and the perspective that only time can bring.

The result is music that feels both familiar and refreshed—songs rooted in friendship, memory, struggle, and perseverance. Matt Jones and The Bobs are not simply returning; they are moving into a new season with confidence and heart.
