Mountain Grass Unit presents Appalachian Smoke, the band’s debut studio LP, available now via Dualtone Records. The 13-track collection was produced by six-time Grammy winner Vance Powell (Chris Stapleton, Jack White, Phish).
Appalachian Smoke carries the history of Mountain Grass Unit within it: a musical bond forged in childhood jam sessions around Birmingham, years of grassroots touring and the intuitive exchange of musicians who have learned to anticipate one another in real time. The project preserves the quicksilver interplay of MGU’s live show, and simultaneously provides them room to stretch as composers and arrangers. Acoustic precision anchors the record, but psychedelic textures, country-soul ache and open-ended improvisation reveal four players testing the outer reaches of their shared musical language without sacrificing its clarity.
Appalachian Smoke is now available across digital platforms and on vinyl through Mountain Grass Unit’s online store, and at select retailers. Collectors and audiophiles alike can find both black and a limited edition Smoke vinyl on the MGU online store, and a limited Forest Black Wave variant exclusively through Magnolia Records. Across a summer-long rollout, advance singles revealed the breadth of the album one song at a time, moving through the open-hearted lift of “Window for a Friend” and the far-reaching title track to the country-soul tenderness of “Wait for Me” and the traditional bluegrass tension of “Suspicion.”

Arriving alongside the album is focus track “Eagle’s Nest,” a full-throttle display of Mountain Grass Unit’s compositional reach and instrumental command. A galloping, inquisitive Phrygian lead figure sets the piece in motion, electric sitar and gong widen the arrangement, and echoing four-part vocal harmonies build toward a standout effects-laden solo from guitarist Luke Black, who transforms his acoustic guitar into a distorted, high-gain flamethrower.
Recorded almost entirely live and without a metronome, Appalachian Smoke preserves the spontaneity and instinctive interplay that define Mountain Grass Unit onstage. Powell kept the sessions centered on four players in a room, allowing the songs to bend and breathe while expanding the band’s studio vocabulary. “We wanted the album to feel like our live show,” bassist Sam Wilson says.
That range continues across the rest of the album. The title track reaches toward broader sonic horizons, while “Earthquake” pushes further into psychedelic terrain. “Wait for Me,” featuring pedal steel from Karl Smakula, carries a glowing country-soul ache, while “Suspicion,” co-written by fiddler Josiah Nelson and Dualtone labelmate Aubory Bugg, narrows the frame to traditional bluegrass heartbreak. Guest contributors include Greensky Bluegrass’ Anders Beck and Grammy-winning fiddler Michael Cleveland.
Some of the album’s ideas traveled with the band for years. Black carried the riff for “Eagle’s Nest” long before the sessions, while lines Wilson wrote years earlier eventually found their home in “Wait for Me.” That slow accumulation meets the immediacy of the recording process, giving Appalachian Smoke the feeling of music both deeply lived-in and newly discovered.
Appalachian Smoke also marks the first studio chapter of Mountain Grass Unit as a full-time band. Drury Anderson, Luke Black and Sam Wilson built a shared language through childhood jam sessions in Birmingham before Josiah Nelson completed the quartet. For years, the band developed its audience around school schedules. Once Anderson, Black and Wilson graduated in 2025, the pace accelerated: more than 30 sold-out shows that year, the 2025 IBMA Momentum Award for Band of the Year, a multi-date Australian tour in March 2026 and a growing presence on major festival stages.
That trajectory carried Mountain Grass Unit through a breakthrough summer featuring Railbird, Bonnaroo, High Sierra, Under the Big Sky and Grand Targhee, along with select dates supporting country star Dierks Bentley. The band’s touring front-of-house engineer, Cameron Reichert, is also a nominee for the 2026 IBMA Industry Award for Sound Engineer of the Year.
Recognition has come from artists and critics alike. In his IBMA keynote, Billy Strings pointed to Mountain Grass Unit as part of a new wave moving bluegrass forward and called them “killer pickers.” Rolling Stone singled out the band’s Bonnaroo appearance as “a barn-burning set,” while Live For Live Music wrote that Mountain Grass Unit “crafted an album based on feel and instinct,” calling them “one of the jamgrass scene’s most promising new bands.” Bluegrass Today has likewise praised the quartet’s grounding in bluegrass, instrumental virtuosity and vocal strength.
The album arrives at the close of a milestone Nashville week that saw Mountain Grass Unit make their Grand Ole Opry debut on August 26 and celebrate the record the following night at Brooklyn Bowl Nashville. The Opry invitation came in May at DelFest, where Del McCoury and Ronnie McCoury joined Mountain Grass Unit onstage before Del announced the news to the band and crowd.
Following the release, the Appalachian Smoke Tour resumes September 6 at Earl Scruggs Music Festival and carries the band across North America through late November. Highlights include Tipitina’s in New Orleans, two nights at Denver’s Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom, West Hollywood’s Troubadour, Washington, DC’s 9:30 Club, Brooklyn Bowl New York, Boston’s Royale and two nights at Garcia’s in Chicago. The band will also appear on 9/9 at Seasick Records in Birmingham for an exclusive live session and album signing event. Festival stops include Earl Scruggs Music Festival, Annapolis Baygrass, Hillberry and Suwannee Hulaween, followed by Panic en la Playa in January 2027.

Mountain Grass Unit stand at the intersection of bluegrass music’s past and future. Formed around the long-running musical bond between mandolinist/vocalist Drury Anderson, guitarist Luke Black and bassist Sam Wilson, the Birmingham, AL-born band has spent more than a decade turning childhood chemistry into a singular modern roots language.
