Once again reminding the world of the storied creative past and present of San Francisco, the Outside Lands festival came to Golden Gate Park, drawing hundreds of thousands of music fans from across the globe. Now a full 18 years removed from its inaugural debut, its presence has been felt in the fabric of modern live entertainment as its identity has continued to grow throughout the decades. Day one of this year’s event proved a high energy display of some of the most upbeat acts who remain at the forefront of their scene, reflecting an element of upbeat angst in the Friday lineup.
Opening the weekend on the headlining Lands End stage, Moroccan-Canadian singer-songwriter Faouzia was first to draw a crowd to the headlining Lands End stage. Debuting a set that showcased her deep and resonant vocal range and almost operatic timbre, the performance exuded an intimate style of delivery and profoundly featured the artist’s natural talents through minimal accompaniment.
Making their long awaited debut at Outside Lands, tenured pop punk act The Story So Far gave a highly anticipated mid-day performance on the Sutro stage. Hailing from neighboring Walnut Creek, the Bay Area natives lived up to the hype surrounding their homecoming on one of the largest stages in the environment that shaped their creative tastes. As the band took their spots onstage to open with their 2013 single “The Glass,” frontman Parker Cannon immediately motioned for the crowd to open up a mosh pit, and from the first seconds, nostalgic memories of a Warped Tour-era reminiscent environment filled the grounds. A steady stream of crowdsurfers flowed from the back of Lindley Meadow to the front of the stage for the full duration of the show as the group reminded audiences of the unfiltered enthusiasm this genre once gave a generation of Millennials.
Continuing the rambunctious demeanor on the Sutro stage, Baltimore punk act Turnstile injected some energy into the crowd as the sun began to set over the park. Opening with their 2025 single “Never Enough” the audience quickly took their cues from singer Brendan Yates as he leapt across the stage with an animated demeanor that has always been synonymous with this East Coast act. Jumping into the crowd shortly after to perform “Endless” with the audience at their eye level, the energy only exploded from there. Making a surprise cameo on the onstage screen and viewing the set from backstage, “boygenius” members Lucy Dacus and Juline Baker were shown in attendance, a stark reminder of the weight this festival holds over the greater music community.
Headlining the evening and closing out Day one of the festival, modern pop icon Charli xcx closed the Friday bill out with a bang as she filled the Polo Field to capacity. Fresh off the heels of the release of her latest album “Music, Fashion, Film” just a few weeks prior, the set embodied an energetic and choreographically elaborate tone as the artist made strides to shift her brand past the Brat summer era into a grungier and more intense style of performance. Explosive pyrotechnic effects set the mood from the moment the lights began to dim as the artist took her spot atop a high platform to begin with her recent upbeat single “Rock Music.” Giving audiences a full range of her creative repertoire, she spiritedly played tracks from her decades in music including “Guess,” “Track 10,” and “SS26.” Ending the evening with a sentimental conclusion, the artist concluded her set with her recent single “No One Lasts Forever,” a single appropriately encapsulating the spirit of her new era. Stoically standing in place for the last several minutes of her set as a monologue by filmmaker David Cronenberg playing through the speakers, the moment forced a moment of reflection as all listened to the repetition of the thesis-bearing line of the single “They are dead, they are gone, no one lasts forever.”
