Sticking the landing on one of the most anticipated festival lineups of the summer, day three of this year’s Outside Lands put a major punctuation on the magnitude of legacies featured on the many stages across Golden Gate Park. A day that featured artists who have built their names on vulnerability and honest storytelling, the lineup brought a sense of sentimentality at every opportunity.
Starting the Sunday lineup with a wealth of flamboyance and passion, the members of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus opened the final day of the festival with a clinic in showmanship on the headlining Lands End stage. A staple of the Bay Area’s musical history, the group showcased their tenured place in the creative story of San Francisco as more than 100 members of the chorus took the stage. Their second time playing the same venue in as many years, the chorus built on their experience demonstrated last year during their accompaniment of Big Freedia through a series of covers and elaborate choreography, playing hits from the contemporary American songbook including Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Cut to the Feeling,” Natasha Bedingfield’s “Unwritten” and Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club.”
Playing a heartfelt and sincere midday set on the festival’s often overlooked Panhandle stage, acoustic folk trio Amble drew an impressive crowd to a set that defined the heart of the weekend. The low fog hanging amongst the dark greenery of Golden Gate park proved a moodsetting atmosphere for the West Irish band as they took the stage and opened with their narratively revealing single “Schoolyard Days.” “It’s amazing to be this far from home and to look out and see this.” said member Oisin McCaffery, reflecting on their love for the city of San Francisco and the memories of having played there three times since the start of last year. Ending their time onstage with abundant enthusiasm, the band closed with an energetic rendition of their 2025 single “Tonnta”, building to an earcatching and demanding crescendo before taking a formal final bow.
Among the biggest artists to play on the Twin Peaks stage, Atlanta R&B artist Mariah the Scientist gave a soulful display of her flowing vocal prowess. A grounding keyboard melody echoed throughout the grounds of Hellman Hollow as the artist took her spot atop a platform and began her set with her recent single “United Nations + 1000 Ways to Die.” Quickly remarking on the frigid San Francisco summer weather, she joked with the crowd “It’s so cold outside. Oh well, we’ll make it hot” as the choreography of her backup dancers began to captivate the attention of the audience. Frequently taking a beat to wave back to individual fans in the sea of thousands, the artist’s performance embodied a personal feeling through her demeanor as she showcased a full account of her work with works including “Sacrifice,” “Beetlejuice,’ and “Burning Blue.”
Closing out the evening and the weekend on the Sutro stage, veteran indie rock act Death Cab for Cutie that embodied the spirit of the band’s three decades of worldwide touring. Having earlier that day performed their breakthrough album “Plans” in its entirety to open the stage for the day, a set whose audience even included San Francisco mayor Daniel Laurie, the group’s second show drew an even more robust gathering that filled Lindley Meadows to capacity. A set that reflected the heartfelt intimacy this band has brought to their decades together and 10 full studio albums, the set proved a nostalgic and gentle way to end three days of chaos and adrenaline. Determined to include some of their fans’ favorite works in both sets, the band repeated several singles across both performances, including “Soul Meets Body,” “Crooked Teeth,” and “I Will Follow You Into the Dark.” Ending the weekend with a defining statement on their proclivities for sentimentality, the group closed with a dramatic abundance of emotional lyricism, sending audiences off into the night with the titular single from their 2003 album, “Transatlanticism.”
