JOHN COLTRANE CENTENNIAL RAVI COLTRANE QUARTET SAT, MAY 9, 8 PM LeFrak Concert Hall
As the jazz world continues to celebrate the centennial of John Coltrane, one of the music’s most enduring legacies arrives in Queens on May 9, when the Ravi Coltrane Quartet takes the stage at LeFrak Concert Hall.
Born into jazz royalty as the son of John Coltrane and Alice Coltrane, Ravi Coltrane has spent decades honoring that lineage while steadily carving out his own voice. A Grammy-nominated artist in his own right, Coltrane brings a sound that reflects both deep-rooted tradition and a modern sense of exploration—something critics have consistently recognized. As The New York Times noted, “There are few saxophonists in jazz today as silvery and deft as Ravi Coltrane.”
For this special performance, part of the ongoing celebration of John Coltrane’s 100th birthday, Coltrane’s ensemble brings together a remarkable group of collaborators, demonstrating “marvelous technical capabilities and keen musicianship,” with “imaginative interpretations” that reflect both strength and curiosity, according to NPR.
The quartet features:
Ravi Coltrane — Saxophone
Matt Mitchell — Piano
Noah Garabedian — Bass
Elé Howell — Drums
More than a tribute, the evening offers a living continuation of the Coltrane legacy—music that doesn’t simply look back, but moves forward with purpose and openness.
