Today, Rhett Miller released “Heart Attack Days,” the new single from This Misfit, his first solo album in four years out this Friday via ATO Records. Miller also announced a string of solo tour dates in celebration of the new album that will make stops in Texas and the Northeast. The 11-song collection was co-written and produced by Miller’s Hudson Valley, NY neighbor Sam Cohen (Kevin Morby, Sharon Van Etten, Danger Mouse) and continues their musical partnership that began on 2018’s The Messenger. The Misfit is now available for pre-order.

“I wrote the verse lyrics that kick-started ‘Heart Attack Days’ in an apartment in Dallas’ Lower Greenville neighborhood,” Miller explains. “I hadn’t been back in a while and was stunned by how much the place had changed. The few remaining examples of the kind of funky rent-houses where my friends and I had lived in the ‘90s were either abandoned or in the process of being torn down. I watched the sun set over a half-demolished duplex, and couldn’t help but make a song out of the feeling it inspired, a bittersweet longing for a bygone time.”
“Heart Attack Days” follows the release of “Go Through You” and “Follow You Home” that features vocals from Cassandra Jenkins and Annie Nero. “Follow You Home” was praised by American Songwriter, BrooklynVegan and Rolling Stone, who said, “With shades of Fleetwood Mac and dream-pop, the buoyant “Follow You Home” is anchored by its upbeat rhythm and sunny splashes of electric guitar.”
In their review of the The Misfit, Goldmine proclaimed, “the leading man for alt.-country kingpins the Old 97s grows more and more sophisticated with his songwriting, arrangements, and storytelling with age,” while Texas Music Magazine called it “...an album that builds upon his reputation and goes well beyond expectations.” This Friday, September 16, Miller will appear on NPR’s World Cafe for an interview and performance of new songs from The Misfit.
