Nashville, TN - April 3, 2026 - Songwriter, singer, and award-winning mandolinist Sierra Hull is always up for a musical challenge, so when the FreshGrass Institute commissioned her to write a “bluegrass concerto” ahead of their 2023 event, she didn’t hesitate for a reason to add “composer” to her multi-hyphenate title. Jumping at the opportunity to write something on which she and her band could stretch their legs, so to speak, Hull penned a three-movement piece, combining through-composed ideas and arranged parts while also leaving room for improvisational magic, a key ingredient to any bluegrass instrumental. With these compositions, Hull joined contemporaries like Béla Fleck, Rhiannon Giddens, Sarah Jarosz, and Kronos Quartet in being immortalized in the FreshGrass commissions canon.
This week, Hull announced a crisp studio recording of her bluegrass concerto, simply dubbed The Movements, for release on April 10. Hull and her world-class band—Avery Merritt, Erik Coveney, Mark Raudabaugh, and Shaun Richardson—initially entered the studio to record The Movements right after performing the collection at FreshGrass for the first time, but a busy tour schedule and finishing up her latest album, A Tip Toe High Wire, put the three new pieces on the back burner. Thankfully, only for a short while.
“Movement 3 has been a staple in our live shows over the last few years, occasionally sneaking in Movement 1 or Movement 2 when we were craving a challenge,” says Hull. “Folks have been asking for a while now when we would finally release a recording of them, so we are pumped to finally share it with everyone! It’s truly a capture of the earliest days of this group of musicians learning to make music together.”
