Spafford kicked off their Spring Tour with a packed room on a Tuesday night in the heart of downtown Greensboro, North Carolina, at the beloved and nostalgic jam-band staple of the Triad, Ziggy’s.

Unknown to the crowd at the time, the band had dubbed the night “Chuck’s Dream: Two Piece Puzzle.” From the very beginning, Spafford set the tone for the evening’s dreamy theme, opening the show with “Dream Jam,” which flowed seamlessly into “Night After Night.” The pairing set the mood perfectly and seemed almost destined to lead into the next tune, “A Union Divine” by Don McCloskey.

By this point, the band and crowd were fully locked in together as Spafford launched into a sprawling 25-minute-and-33-second rendition of “In the Eyes of Thieves.” The deep improvisation had the room completely captivated before the band wrapped up the first set with a surprise breakout cover of Steve Miller’s “Shu Ba Da Du Ma Ma Ma Ma.”

After a brief set break, the band returned to the stage and kept the dreamy atmosphere alive. They opened the second set with “Chuck’s Dream,” setting the tone for the rest of the set’s fluid journey. “Gold Glittered Hat” transitioned smoothly into “Comfortable,” keeping the improvisational energy flowing.

Still floating in that dreamlike space, Spafford beautifully guided the audience into “Darkness Singularity,” which melted seamlessly into “Crowd,” creating another immersive moment of musical exploration.

By the time the set came to a close, it felt as if the room had collectively been drifting through the same dream. As the final notes rang out, the crowd wasn’t ready to wake up just yet. Cheers filled Ziggy’s, calling the band back to the stage.

After a few laughs and some playful back-and-forth with the audience, Spafford returned for an encore, closing the night with “Legend” before wrapping things up with “Frog Gossip.”
