The Devil Makes Three has always thrived in the liminal space between genres, where the grit of folk, the soul of blues, and the rebellion of punk collide. Their music doesn’t just follow the American storytelling tradition — it reinvents it. Whether evoking the melancholy of Delta blues or the frenetic energy of punk, their sound remains raw, powerful, and unmistakably their own. For over two decades, this trio has captivated audiences with their high-energy performances and fearless approach to roots music. Their latest album, Spirits, marks a return to their stripped-down origins, offering a deeply personal reflection on grief, addiction, and perseverance.

Formed in 2002 in Santa Cruz, California, by Pete Bernhard and Cooper McBean, the group now includes longtime collaborator MorganEve Swain on upright bass and vocals, stepping in for founding member Lucia Turino. Over the years, The Devil Makes Three has carved out a space in the American roots scene by embracing the unvarnished beauty of acoustic music, delivering seven studio albums and three live releases along the way.

Spirits, produced by Grammy-winner Ted Hutt (Old Crow Medicine Show, Dropkick Murphys, Violent Femmes), takes listeners through an emotional journey — from the haunting “Lights on Me” and title track “Spirits,” which grapple with themes of loss and mortality, to “Half as High” and “Divide and Conquer,” which confront economic disparity and political division. Recorded at Dreamland, a converted church studio outside Woodstock, New York, the sessions were punctuated by real thunderstorms that echoed the album’s somber, introspective tone.

“There’s definitely a theme of ghosts and death running through this album,” says Bernhard. “We wanted this record to speak to the challenges people face today — loss, addiction, and the divisions tearing people apart.”

Despite its weighty subject matter, the band remains a rhythm-driven powerhouse built for live celebration. The Devil Makes Three’s performances blend communal release with a rough-hewn joy that transforms somber themes into cathartic experience. As Bernhard reflects, “We’ve always done what we wanted to do, and this album is no different. It’s a reflection of where we are now — personally and as a society — and we’re excited for our fans to hear it.”

The band is set to embark on a national tour in early 2025 in support of Spirits, continuing their legacy as one of the most vital forces in contemporary roots music.
