”This song is written about the love of my life and the journey of our relationship and how it’s transformed my life,” says guitarist Ricky Feria of the Colorado-based funk-n-soul outfit The Hip Snacks. “Written over 5 years after we met, the verse lyrics highlight how I felt in the early days of our relationship and the choruses best describe the way I feel about her after many years together. This song was written as a way to profess my love for her in the way I know best, through the power of music and songwriting.” The band’s latest, “When You’re Around,” nods to 90s pop icons like Alanis Morissette and Sheryl Crow, fused with a punchy, sing-along chorus and a classic southern rock guitar.
“When You’re Around” is the latest single from The Hip Snacks’ upcoming LP, Out On A Limb, due out on April 24th. The band’s second full-length album, and a clear step towards the national spotlight they deserve, Out On A Limb is all about taking that leap, trying something new, and giving it a chance. The impetus of the idea is also part of the band’s origin story. Five years into their relationship, after deciding that she wanted to give singing an honest go, Durante performed with Suarez in front of an audience for the first time. That leap together led Durante and Suarez to move to Denver and find four other band members who’d also been taking chances and chasing dreams, and as they say, the rest is history. Before they knew it, The Hip Snacks were playing shows coast to coast and building a fanbase the old-fashioned way: by leaving it all on stage every night.
