Twisted Pine is coming to Colorado for a week beginning June 20, to tour their joyous new LP, Love Your Mind, out from Signature Sounds Recordings. Dubbed “a band to watch” by NPR, Twisted Pine has a strong devotion to Colorado, having found many fans at festivals which include Telluride Bluegrass Festival, RockyGrass Festival, WinterWondergrass / Steamboat Springs, and MeadowGrass.
Love Your Mind is the band’s first album in four years, a long-awaited follow-up to their pandemic release, Right Now, which No Depression praised for its “sheer pop glory,, funky all-day grooves, and spacecraft sonics.”
On vinyl and on stage, the sound of Twisted Pine is unmistakable, exuberant, daring.
What started as a semi-traditional bluegrass band in the trenches of the storied folk, bluegrass, and Americana scene in Boston a decade ago has bloomed into an ensemble cast of players who shapeshift across genres to feature whatever music they love. Even the expansive term “progressive bluegrass” doesn’t come close to capturing their musical scope. They’ve been called everything from jamgrass to jazz.
Co-produced by the band and longtime collaborator Dan Cardinal at Dimension Sound in Boston, Love Your Mind is the sound of fearless songwriting, experimental production, finely crafted collaborative arrangements, and virtuosic playing.
On stage Chris Sartori’s upright bass anchors the band with an articulate groove. Dan Bui’s mandolin is crisp and propulsive. Kathleen Parks’ fiddle and Anh Phung’s flute are at constant play, with pedal effects for layered textures and psychedelic sounds. Out in front Parks’ lead vocals are an instrument too – equal parts mystery, power, haunt and a search for the edges.
Twisted Pine has a particularly deep devotion to Colorado and can’t wait to get back for a short run this month.
“Colorado has always been a second home to us, musically and spiritually,” says Chris Sartori, bass and vocals. “Some of our first great tours happened there, where we caught glimpses of how our music can connect, live and breathe with open minded audiences.”
““We love Colorado's open-minded music scene: musicians, fans, promoters,” says Dan Bui, mandolin and vocals.
“Colorado has some of our favourite audiences,” says Anh Phung, flute and vocals. “Super open minded and ready to go to space with us. The landscape is gorgeous and there’s plenty of rock climbing. Our band’s favourite pho is also there! The Pho Tai Kobe from Pho Duy in Broomfield CO!”
Kathleen Parks, fiddle and lead vocals, says, “Love the beauteous mountains, creeks to dip in, and vivacious energy of the people…don’t love the elevation sickness.”
These are Twisted Pine’s public appearances in Colorado, beginning with June 20.
