Which Side?: A Protest Music Teach-Out returns for another compelling evening of music, storytelling, and community engagement on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at The Burren Backroom. The beloved series has evolved from a unique experiment into a cornerstone monthly gathering, where artists and audiences come together to listen, create community and organize, all through the power of music.
Drawing inspiration from James Sullivan's book, Which Side Are You On?: 20th Century American History in 100 Protest Songs, the series highlights the significance of historical protest music as a catalyst for live performances and discussions about the enduring impact of songs in the fight for justice and social change. Each month, featured musicians perform one song from Sullivan's collection alongside a contemporary protest piece, bridging the gap between historical challenges and today's struggles.
The September lineup features performances by BVOCAL, a protest chorus committed to uplifting rallies, marches, picket lines, and civil disobedience with singing wherever people gather for justice, along with Matt York, Richie Parsons, La Chusma, Shaw Pong Liu, and Sidy Maiga. Artists will be accompanied by the talented house band, The Paid Protesters.
“This series continues to create a platform for diverse voices, fostering understanding and forging connections within our community,” says Sullivan. “Each month, we harness the power of storytelling to bring us together.”
Produced by Joyce Linehan, Jon Lupfer, and Sullivan, the 90-minute program blends live performances, insightful commentary, and opportunities for audience participation, offering a unique blend of concert, teach-in, and community forum.
“This series celebrates our shared experiences, nurturing connections that inspire collective action,” according to Linehan. “In a time when dialogue is crucial, we strive to cultivate spaces that encourage open conversation.”
