Progressive bluegrass mainstays Yonder Mountain String Band release their 12th studio album, Good As True, today via Thirty Tigers. Recorded live in the studio and featuring all-new original songs, the album captures the band unguarded, in motion, and fully present.
Good As True moves with purpose, shifting between intensity and space without losing its footing. It’s the sound of a band 27 years in, still choosing instinct over formula.

The record centers on communication—the conversations that carry us forward and the ones that fall apart. The things we say, the things we mean, and everything that gets lost in between. Across the album, bluegrass drive meets indie-leaning textures and song-focused writing, allowing each track to move between momentum and reflection.
“The songs on the record took one shape in the studio, and once we get them out on the road, they become something else,” shared Adam Aijala. “That transformation is a big part of what keeps us writing and pushing forward.”
Banjo player Dave Johnston added, “We’ve always believed in sharing the music we’re making right now, without worrying about whether it fits into any category. We’re writing songs as the ideas come to us, not going in with an intention. That’s always been the through line.”
Across its eight tracks, those ideas play out in different ways, with the band moving fluidly between drive, harmony, and space, shaped by decades of live experience.
The album rollout was led by singles including “Brand New Heartache” and “Blind.”
“Brand New Heartache” captures that fragile moment after a breakup where loss and forward motion coexist, built on rock-leaning verses and a bluegrass-lifted chorus. Watch “Brand New Heartache”
“Blind” pairs a bright, melodic drive with a more introspective look at self-awareness and change. Watch “Blind”
The album centerpiece, “Barroom Feather,” is a sixteen-minute track recorded live with no blueprint—the band locked in, letting it unfold in real time. The album’s title comes from a line in the song.
“Barroom Feather” stands apart. An indie-leaning track at its core, the song began with lyrics and opened into an extended piece recorded live with no blueprint—the band locked in, letting it unfold in real time. Stretching past sixteen minutes and anchored by a subtle drum track, it expands the band’s rhythmic palette without losing their acoustic foundation. A shorter radio edit, included digitally and on CD, clocks in at under four minutes.
Across eight original tracks written by Adam Aijala, Dave Johnston, Ben Kaufmann, and Nick Piccininni, Good As True reflects a band writing from inside their own history, relationships, and the world around them. The songs move between drive and space, humor and weight, bluegrass precision and indie-informed songwriting. It’s a record that stays grounded in where Yonder has been while remaining open to where they can still go.
