Steely Dan brought its “Rockabye Gollie Angel” summer tour to Ravinia in suburban Chicago, and it was a jazzy and classy affair. The two performances at the upscale open-air music venue featured a special set from Chicago-based jazz guitarist Bobby Broom instead of tour opener Elvis Costello and the Imposters. Broom’s Organi-Sation trio, initially formed at Steely Dan’s behest in 2014 to fill the opening slot on last year’s U.S. trek, did a fine job setting the mood for the evening.

How grand is it that in a thriving music culture we find ourselves blessed with genre specific events. Too often I find a billing with ‘everything plus the kitchen sink’. Having variety in a billing is nice. Having a concise theme and being able to attend as much of the scheduled performances as you like is even better. Earlier this spring we were reminded just how nice that is with the 1st Phunkberry Music Festival that catered to the almighty funk genre.
Fans of THE WHO can look forward to the Friday, September 11 reissue of the 1972 recording of TOMMY as performed by the London Symphony Orchestra and Chambre Choir with guest soloists Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle, along with Rod Stewart, Ringo Starr, Steve Winwood, Merry Clayton, Richie Havens, Sandy Denny, Maggie Bell, Graham Bell, and actor Richard Harris

The last day of Rhythms on the Rio 2015 was clear and sunny—and really quite pleasant temperature-wise. The day’s event began as Saturday’s did with YogaDurango offering an hour all-levels yoga class for festivalgoers. This free class was well attended by about twenty, very obvious advanced yoga practitioners yesterday, who were stretched out on the grass and under canopies. Today’s participants were fewer. But yoga seemed to set a tone for a laid back kind of day today, though the music was definitely hot.
Today’s Rhythms on the Rio opened up with heavy cloud cover, promising rain. That’s not a good sign with an outdoor festival, but these Coloradoans are a hardy lot and will dance to music no matter the condition. For Blake Himert and his sound crew, though, it’s a lot of extra tarping and strategic towel placement, which they already did a bit Friday night. Luckily, what rain we did have was light that came mid-afternoon.
