A decade ago Jimmie Vaughan released his definitive album Blues, Ballads and Favorites. Acclaimed Malian rock band Songhoy Blues have released their new track “Barre” today. The group has emerged as a vital band coming out of the surging African music scene who make music for both the moment and the people. Translated from their native Songhai, “Barre” means change. The song was written to inspire the youth of their Mali homeland to get involved and help change their corrupt and oppressive political system. In light of the very recent military coup d’etat in Mali, it could not come at a more prescient and poignant time.

It first hit the street on 29th August 1980 in the UK and on 1st September the same year in the US.

I am far from an “Ordinary Soul.” Life experiences have tainted me, quirky, dark humored, jaded and at times sassy verging on salty. (I’m proud of these characteristics. Who wants to be run of the mill?) After listening to Stephen “Mojo” Mougin’s 12-track album I can confidentiality state there is nothing ‘ordinary’ about his music. Its ‘soul’ is Americana at its finest with solid storytelling, clear vocals and instrumentals that range from rousing to consoling.
