Marcus King

When you’ve invited some musicians to your family reunion, odds are there’s going to be a little get-together to sing songs and trade solos. This year’s Marcus King Band Family Reunion is no exception, only it’ll be happening on the main stage with some of the world’s finest singers and pickers. Taking place on the main stage on Saturday, August 23rd, at North Charleston, South Carolina’s Firefly Distillery, the man himself will be hosting a Marcus King & Friends set for the ages.

Marcus King turned the main stage into a master class in soulful Southern rock. Opening with a heart-wrenching “Goodbye Carolina,” joined by his wife Briley King, he paid homage to Sly Stone and Brian Wilson, then tore into a blistering cover of the Allman Brothers’ “Ramblin’ Man.” King’s guitar solos were liquid fire, translating emotion into sonic waves that swept the audience.

The Marcus King Band Family Reunion is all about friends, food, and in Marcus King’s words, “front porch pickin’.” Inspired by weekends past with his family, the two-day festival—August 23rd and 24th at Firefly Distillery in North Charleston, South Carolina—is a hopped-up version of exactly that, complete with a front porch-inspired jam for the ages. Today, single day lineups were announced for the Marcus King Band Family Reunion including a special Marcus King & Friends set on Saturday.

“When I was growing up in South Carolina, once a year we’d pack the family car up and head to my great grandparents’ home for some front porch pickin’, covered dishes, lots of love, and plenty of leftovers,” says fourth-generation Carolinian musician Marcus King.

Big-name headliners Lenny Kravitz (Friday), Sublime (Saturday), and Alanis Morissette (Sunday) led the way on the massive High Tide (the official main stage with its enormous viewing-area lawn of artificial but lush, cool grass) and Low Tide (in front of an expansive sandy beach) stages, with big 90-minute sets in front of up to 11,000 jolly souls. Other mighty 60 and 75-minute alternating performances on the High and Low Tide stages were delivered by such acclaimed performers as Train, The Beach Boys (with John Stamos), the Pretenders, Jackson Browne, Mt. Joy, Marcus King, Cake, Skip Marley, Susanna Hoffs, and Aloe Blacc.
