Robbie Robertson, the legendary guitarist, songwriter, and founding member of The Band, passed away on August 9, 2023. His death marks the end of an era that witnessed profound influence on rock and roll, folk, and the popular music landscape. He was 80.
Born on July 5, 1943, in Toronto, Canada, Robertson's unique upbringing fostered his passion for music. With his mother's Mohawk and Cayuga heritage and his passion for rhythm and blues, Robertson's style was as diverse as his roots.

Who influenced who? I wasn’t introduced to The Band until after maybe my fifth Dead show. For me, this was the 90’s, still just a teenager. The popular music at that time, in my opinion, was nowhere near the caliber of the iconic bluegrass, folk, country, psychedelic, classic rock bands. I was diving into my parents’ world, my mind being blown, unfamiliar with the timeline of music influencers. Not as well known, The Band was the most influential in the development of the Dead’s sound.

The final show of 'The Last Waltz Tour' was held at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on Saturday, November 23rd, 2019 and featured special guest Robbie Robertson sans Turkey dinner for all. The 2019 tour honored The Band's iconic 1976 Thanksgiving Day farewell concert at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. Robertson, the lead guitarist for The Band, was also the organizer of the original concert.

“We love Christmas and the holidays, it brings good cheer, and also stress and depression, so I wanted to do a song that celebrates both sides and have a little fun,” says Robertson.
