Django Reinhardt

On this day, January 23rd, 2024, we at Grateful Web celebrate the birthday of Django Reinhardt, a pioneering figure whose influence reverberates through the realms of jazz, bluegrass, and beyond. Django's journey was one of resilience and innovation, leaving an indelible mark on music and on artists like Jerry Garcia.

Pat Philips announces the much-anticipated return of the Django Reinhardt NY Festival, taking place from November 14th to 19th at the legendary Birdland Jazz Club. This year marks the 24th anniversary of the festival, celebrating the enduring legacy of gypsy jazz icon Django Reinhardt.

Guitar virtuoso Matteo Mancuso will release his debut album, 'The Journey', on July 21st via The Players Club/Mascot Label Group. He has revealed the first track from the album, "Drop D," which you can listen to here.

If Django Reinhardt, Dmitri Shostakovich and Claude Debussy ever sat down to write an album, the result may not have been too far from violinist Tobie Medland’s vision for The Aviary (July 7th, Future Fable Records).

Known for his work on the gypsy jazz scene - including as founder of the Gypsy Jazz Festival of London - Medland presents a refined, modern, avante-garde and genre spanning take on a style which rose to popularity almost 100 years ago.

Birdland will be alive with “Hot Gypsy Jazz” featuring the Django Festival Allstars and Lead Guitarist, Samson Schmitt’s two talented daughters as special guests. It's the first time they both appear alongside their Dad to bring their enormous talent to Birdland, Stefi (17) and Stenli (7)

The The Allstars swing like crazy and will break your heart with a ballad, true virtuosos of Django’ style, carrying his legacy to today. The Band perform all over the country to standing ovations!

Django’s unmistakable cool and jumpin’ jole de vivre have made him an icon for an unlikely range of luminaries from Carlos Santana to Eric Clapton, guitar greats! Jimi Hendrix named his “big band of gypsies” in tribute, and Willie Nelson adopted his influence in “country-swing.”

There’s nothing like The Django Festival Allstars to bring pure JOY to an audience, and it’s exactly what we need now having been through a  difficult year and a half.  Their music reaches right into your heart and brings ‘smiles’ a mile long, as the music is ‘happy’, infectious, and full of love. “HOT GYPSY JAZZ” and The Django Reinhardt NY Festival is the place to be.

“The best show in town”. ...Will Friedwald, The Wall Street Journal
