Peter Rowan

As Tim O’Brien and Friends kicked off the final set of RockyGrass 2012, I planted my feet a couple of yards behind the elevated stage. The canopy of treetops overhead, awash in color from the stage lights, absorbed a light drizzle. To my right, the deity of all double bassists, Edgar Meyer, calmly warmed up next to the main stage staircase.

As a relative newcomer to Colorado, I've been waiting to find a festival than can live up to the wonderful Arkansas festivals I've come to know and love over the years. I can definitely say I've found just such a festival high in the mountains at Rancho Del Rio, YarmonyGrass.

Ticket sales are underway for the 6th annual YarmonyGrass festival set to take place on the Colorado River from August 5th-7th. The boutique festival aims to cater to the vibrant outdoor sports and music community boasting a prime location for river rafters, single track bikers and fishing enthusiasts during the day and each night plays host to one of the best string-centric outdoor music events in the Rockies.

What do a hula-hoop, a river raft and a pirate costume have in common? It's Colorado's own YarmonyGrass Festival, of course. The two-night summer camp out known best for its scenic location on the Colorado River basin and its down-home grassroots appeal has announced the 2011 line up, and this year there is a little something for everyone including a little "Crisco" (country-disco for the uninformed), electro, Americana and even soul-lifting roots rock.

The state of Colorado can already boast two major bluegrass festivals, those being the world renowned Telluride Bluegrass and its spectacular younger cousin Rockygrass.  Well, a third of such would be the Yarmony Grass Music Festival, a bluegrass-featured gathering nestled deep in the Rocky Mountains.
