Willie Nelson was awarded “Best Country Solo Performance” for his rendition of Billy Joe Shaver’s “Live Forever” at last night’s 65th Annual Grammy Awards. The song is the opening track of the critically acclaimed album Live Forever: A Tribute to Billy Joe Shaver which was released last year on New West Records & Pedernales Records.

When singer, songwriter and SiriusXM radio host Paula Nelson mentioned to her friend Bruce Robison that she wanted to record some of her dad’s songs, he invited her — and her dad, Willie — to the Bunker, his all-analog recording studio in Lockhart, Texas, where he wound up producing a pair of father-daughter duets. Robison’s label, The Next Waltz, will release the first one, “Slow Down Old World,” on Feb. 24.

Willie Nelson is a world-renowned musical icon, but in Texas, he’s something more: a beloved native son and benevolent elder who’s brought countless new talents into the family fold — often during the famed Luck Reunions at his ranch outside of Austin.

My first concert was Willie Nelson in January of 1984. I was only eight years old. My mum took me as her date since my dad was sick. We trekked across town to the Universal/Gibson Amphitheatre which was later demolished for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood. I remember it being cold and rainy. Regardless of the weather, Angeleno’s were decked out in their country finest. Dark denim, blinged out belts, rhinestone-embellished cowboy hats and Americana regalia filled the theatre.
