J.P. SoarsLET GO OF THE REINS was recorded during a whirlwind weeklong session at Tab Benoit’s Whiskey Bayou studios in Houma Louisiana. Versatility is on display here as Soars laid down his signature vocals and played electric guitar, acoustic guitar, dobro, Merlin Dulcimer, and two-string cigar box guitar while Benoit covered drums plus assorted pedal steel, background vocal and acoustic guitar tracks, Soars’ usual drummer Chris Peet played bass, and keyboard player Tillis Verdin laid down some tasty tracks on the Hamond B3.

The seven original songs and four choice covers span a wide range of styles. The album kicks off with a funky rockin’ blues version of J.B. Lenoir’s “Been Down So Long,” then follows with a Stones-y rock groove cover of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils’ “If You Wanna Get To Heaven,” the up-tempo blues of “Freddie King Thing,” and the hypnotic, slide-powered stomp of the title track. The funky blues instrumental “Crow’s Nest” gives everyone some room to stretch out, while the ultra-smooth “Lonely Fire” provides a perfect setting for J.P.’s beautiful Latin-flavored acoustic guitar. The rocking “Have Mercy On My Soul” leads into the up-tempo country of “Let It Ride,” Django Reinhardt’s jazzy “Minor Blues,” and the bluesy R&B of “Time To Be Done.” The album closes with the relaxed folky feel of “Old Silver Bridge,” which brings in acoustic guitars, dobro, and dulcimer. This incredibly diverse set of songs is unified by J.P. Soars’ soulful, bluesy vocals and razor-sharp guitar work.

J. P. Soars

The inspiration for the album came from the many nights they all spent jamming into the wee hours on the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise and the Big Blues Bender, and as expected, they captured many magical musical moments on this record.

In the decade since Soars burst upon the national scene by winning 1st place in the Blues Foundation’s 2009 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN with his band the Red Hots (and was also crowned with the prestigious Albert King Award as best guitarist,) Arkansas native J.P. Soars has toured extensively through the United States, Canada, South America and Europe, and released an impressive catalog of powerful music.

In addition to his work with his own Red Hots, Soars has been part of the regional all-star blues act Southern Hospitality, also featuring Tampa vocalist/guitarist Damon Fowler and Memphis vocalist/keyboardist Victor Wainwright, plus Red Hots drummer Chris Peet and Wainwright’s bassist Terrance Grayson.

In 2019 Soars was nominated for the Blues Foundation’s Blues Music Award in the Blues Rock category, alongside blues heavyweights Billy Gibbons, Eric Gales, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Tinsley Ellis.

J.P is soaring high, and psyched about the new record: “LET GO OF THE REINS was written and recorded very organically and honestly. We captured the moment, and what a spectacular and special moment it was. I hope you enjoy this record as much as we enjoyed making it.”

The long running Backtrack Blues Band has spent decades refining its blues chops, performing with scores of blues masters. Their seventh album, YOUR BABY HAS LEFT, captures Backtrack’s unique blend of muscular harp and vocals and tasty Texas inspired lead guitar, with stellar accents by Bruce Katz’s keys and The Muscle Shoals Horns. From the first track, you can tell that this is a real deal blues album made by seasoned blues journeymen. The first single, “Best Friends Grave,” is a solidly swinging band track, kicking off with a guitar lead supported by harmonica and lush organ swells. Singer Sonny Charles tells the story of his best friend’s gravesite service turning into a joyous celebration of life, as background vocals lend a strong gospel feel.

Bob Margolin has been a leading force in the blues world for more than 50 years now, as guitarist, bandleader, featured sideman, producer, teacher, writer, recording artist, and keeper of the flame. In the last couple years he reprised his iconic 1976 performance alongside former boss Muddy Waters in Warren Haynes’s hugely successful, star-studded “Last Waltz” tribute tours, and won last year’s “Acoustic Blues Album” Blues Music Award for his first all-acoustic album, “This Guitar and Tonight.”

Margolin’s new album, “Star of Stage and Screens,” continues the all-acoustic format, with new original songs taking on the Coronavirus, isolation, and the halt of live music. He shares missing shows and friends, fear for the word, outrage, grief, new coping skills and new ways to present his music. Home recorded with his trademark slide on his 1930s Gibson and a National Steel guitar, Margolin embraces both traditional styles and new explorations.

The Nighthawks, Washington DC’s legendary road warriors of blues and roots music, celebrate their 50th Anniversary with a brand new album via the VizzTone label group – THE NIGHTHAWKS – ESTABLISHED 1972, hitting the streets April 15, 2022.

In March 2020, with a brand-new recording to promote, The Nighthawks did something previously unthinkable: They stopped in the middle of a Florida tour and drove home. Like so many other people, the band members found themselves out of work as the coronavirus swept the country. TRYIN’ TO GET TO YOU was the first recording with Paul Pisciotta on bass and Dan Hovey on guitar, and the band knew it was good – later borne out by a year’s worth of great press and three months on the Living Blues chart while everything remained shut down.

Itching to play, The Nighthawks found a couple of spaces large enough to stay apart while woodshedding new material. Previously, the process had been a streamlined one: The band would rough out a dozen new tunes in an afternoon and perform them every night for a year or two before recording. But now there was time – tons of it. Weeks turned into months. Dan Hovey wrote a very relevant rocker, “You Seem Distant.” Mark Stutso followed with a full blast “Coming and Going.” Florida friend Colin Kenny, a.k.a. Raiford Starke, wrote the soulful “West Memphis” and the band stylistically took it to Memphis. Stutso came up with “Gas Station Chicken” and everyone contributed to bringing in the funk.  Hovey added three more: “Houseband,” “Fuss and Fight,” and the acoustic delight “Driving.” In between are British pub rock monster Gariant Watkins’ “Nobody”; Jimmy Reed’s “Take it Easy,” featuring producer David Earl contributing the Eddie Taylor licks on guitar; Eddie Hinton’s version of Sam Cook’s “I’ll Come Running Back”; John Hammond’s version of Mose Allison’s “Ask Me Nice”; a wild  version of the reggae classic “Johnny Too Bad”; an outtake rendition of Elvis Presley’s “Ain’t That Lovin’ You”; a Hillbilly interpretation of the Coasters’ “Run Red Run”;  and half a dozen others that fell by the wayside. They’d play, record, rearrange, and re-record til they got them just right.

Then they sought the sympathetic ear of David Earl, who co-produced and recorded TRYIN TO GET TO YOU and the earlier DAMN GOOD TIME. Moving the operation into David’s Severn Studios in Annapolis, Maryland, the band started laying down tracks for real, with the gift of time making the process unusually relaxed.

In the tradition The Nighthawks set forth on ROCK AND ROLL, their debut 1974 recording and mission statement, the material is not bound by genre other than the widest range of American Roots Music.

Decades of gigs and countless rabid fans have earned then the name “The Best Bar Band In The World”. This anniversary album celebrates the legendary Nighthawks, still going strong. This disc represents 50 years of THE NIGHTHAWKS, ESTABLISHED IN 1972.

Singer, guitarist, songwriter, and bandleader, Anthony Rosano, has always been drawn to grit, gravitas and the connection that comes from making music. Although his music is firmly implanted in the firmament of the blues, he takes his cue from any number of archival influences.

Over the span of the past ten years, it’s certainly served him well.

“As a teenager, I was into all the British bands that took their cues from the blues,” he recalls. “I was still a novice on guitar when I read an interview with Glen Tipton, the guitarist from Judas Priest. He mentioned that Peter Green, the genius guitar player for the original Fleetwood Mac, was his main influence, and he cited ‘Green Manalishi’ as the song that had inspired him early on. I found a copy of Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac album recorded live at the Boston Tea Party, and after soaking it all up, it led me to John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, which, in turn, led me to the original blues masters like Freddy King and Muddy Waters. As everything fell into place, I quickly realized that all my favorite songs by my favorite bands were actually blues songs! The feeling I got from those songs became a kind of spiritual connection, one that originated when the English took it upon themselves to emulate the authentic sound of true American soul, and then share it with the rest of the world. It became a transatlantic and universal phenomenon.”

All these years later, Anthony continues to play his part in that continuum. Well recognized and highly respected for his dedication to that specific sound, flush with its drive and determination, he and his band, The Conqueroos — Anthony on guitar and vocals, Kyle McCormick on drums and Jake Fultz on bass — have delighted — and inspired — audiences big and small. Whether on their own or while sharing stages with Bob Seger and his Silver Bullet Band, ZZ Top, Gov’t Mule, Samantha Fish, or Tab Benoit, this powerhouse trio continues to amaze and impress.

In fact, it was that connection to Benoit that led to his upcoming album, Cheat The Devil, which finds Benoit himself sitting behind the boards for producing, engineering, mixing and mastering. The two originally met at a blues festival in 2013 and immediately hit it off. Benoit offered Anthony the opportunity to open for him on tour and two weeks later, suggested they record an album.

Recorded at Whiskey Bayou Studio and due for release this July on Whiskey Bayou Records, the new album represents another defining chapter in a career that’s brought Anthony and his band to the top of the Billboard and iTunes Blues charts, while also drawing the absolute admiration of audiences and aficionados — be it those wholly devoted to the blues, raging rock enthusiasts or heavy metal Metallica fans.

Not surprisingly then, the songs not only live up to expectation, but clearly exceed it as well. They range from the soulful and surging sound of the title track and the dark and dramatic resolve of “What Kind of Fool,” to the steady stomp that resonates throughout “Sin City” and the rocking revelry that underscores “Jonesboro Road.” Other tracks — “Rosalita,” “Scattered Bones” and “Shook” in particular — dig deep into an undercurrent of angst and intensity.

The album will be preceded by two singles — first, the dramatically defiant “Cheat the Devil” and then, following that, a fierce and ferocious take on the classic “King Bee.”

“We had a great time making this record,” Anthony recalls. “Tab is a great guy to hang with and we share similar musical influences and sensibilities. Before going into the studio, we talked about our favorite records and how most of them were recorded live. This record is strictly three guys, all together in the same room playing live in the studio. We had talked about bringing in other musicians on certain songs, but Tab convinced us to maintain the power trio format that reflects our true live sound. There were no overdubs and no edits, and it was mixed directly to tape. Ultimately, we captured the perfect vibe and ended up with a perfectly imperfect organic record.”

While some have compared the Conqueroos’ sound to that of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble or Rory Gallagher, Anthony has always followed his own muse. A native New Yorker who now resides in Norfolk Virginia, he won instant acclaim with his self-released debut, Anthony Rosano and the Conqueroos, produced by Mike Zito, which made its debut at number nine on the Billboard blues chart and then quickly ascended to Number One on the iTunes blues charts at the same time.

Paul Shugrue of NPR may have summed it up best when he said, “Rosano is a top notch triple threat: guitarist, vocalist and songwriter.”

Anthony’s efforts have continued to bear fruit ever since. While the pandemic kept the Conqueroos off the road, Anthony continued to keep in contact with his fans through a series of live streaming acoustic concerts. They were so successful in fact, that one of the new songs he previewed, “Isolation Blues,” was tapped by NPR for use on its “Voice of America” program.

With a forthcoming tour that will find them opening for the Humble Pie Legacy beginning in September, Anthony remains both modest and motivated. He’s clearly paid his dues, citing the fact that within days after playing Madison Square Garden and opening for Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, he was back at home playing for 20 people at a pool party. And while there was a time when he made his living as a successful business man and raised his family, he never lost his motivation to make music, a muse he’s pursued for the past decade.

“I want to connect with people the way music connects with me,” he insists. “I also realize it’s important to put myself out there. The rewards that come from music equate with the human experience in its entirety — what it means to share, to sometimes feel heartbreak, to understand what it’s like to be lost in love. Sometimes it can even be about something silly or superfluous, and yet the affirmation and the bond that come through music is, in my opinion, all part of the joy that comes when a life is well-lived. Personally, I can’t imagine living my life any other way.”

Anthony Rosano and the Conqueroos' new album CHEAT THE DEVIL Produced by Tab Benoit will be available worldwide on CD and all digital/streaming platforms July 7th via Whiskey Bayou Records.

Blues rocker Alastair Greene pays tribute to late British blues guitar legend Peter Green with his cover of the Fleetwood Mac song “If You Be My Baby”.

“I had originally recorded this song at the end of a session I was doing with my band back in California in the fall of 2020. We had a little bit of extra time and so I just wanted to get this one down for posterity. When I returned months later to listen to it I realized that with a little bit of tweaking and some additions of horns and piano it could really be an inspired tribute to one of my favorite guitar players.”

Having recently relocated to Austin, TX, Greene brought in Blues Music Award winners Jimmy Carpenter to play tenor saxophone and Lisa Mann to handle bass. Austin-based keyboard legend Red Young covers the piano part and Southern California-based Austin Beede (who has performed with Greene for years and appears on many of his studio albums) delivered on drums.

“When I sent the track out for Jimmy, Lisa, and Red to put overdubs on I was a little trepidatious. They’re all such accomplished musicians and this song and its arrangement are very simple and somewhat traditional. That said, you can really hear their years of experience and virtuosity on their instruments playing even the simplest of parts.”

Greene had been aware of Peter Green for some time but didn’t become a fan until the early 2000s.

“I had the unique opportunity of playing in Aynsley Dunbar’s band in 2001. Unfortunately, the band never played live, but we worked up a bunch of great material. We did some recording that ended up on Aynsley’s 2007 solo record ‘Mutiny’. Of the material that I developed with Aynsley were some of his songs from his time with Journey, Frank Zappa, David Bowie, and his British blues band Aynsley Dunbar’s Retaliation. We also did a couple of my tunes, and a song called ‘Another Kind of Love’ from the record that he was on with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers.”

Aynsley Dunbar also played on John Mayall’s “A Hard Road” record which features Peter Green, then having just replaced Eric Clapton in the legendary band:

“That was really my first exposure to Peter’s guitar playing, although I’d heard his name thrown around for years. I immediately went out and got “A Hard Road” and fell in love with it. As much as I love the classic ‘Beano’ album featuring Eric Clapton, I prefer ‘A Hard Road’ in many ways because of Peter’s inspired playing and the song selection.”

Shortly after that, Alastair dug info all the early Fleetwood Mac recordings, and Peter became one of his biggest influences and heroes.

People familiar with Alastair’s work as a solo artist may be surprised at the traditional leanings in his approach to “If You Be My Baby”.

“Peter did veer off and get into some rock ‘n’ roll realms, but he definitely was a disciple of the blues and a huge B.B. King fan. Peter deserves to be talked about and mentioned in all conversations regarding 60s British blues, and blues guitar in general, in my opinion,” affirms Greene.

Celebrated Electro-Fi Records is thrilled to unveil a compelling masterpiece, "SoulFunkn’BLUES", by the illustrious Blackburn Brothers. This Canadian dynamo, already laden with accolades, is steeped in a rich musical lineage from their renowned father, R&B sensation Bobby Dean Blackburn, rooted further back to an inspiring family narrative tied to the Underground Railroad from the early 1800s.

Dive into the Blackburns' universe and be entranced by the album's dynamic soundscape. Imagine enthralling rhythms, intricate vocal and instrumental layers that seamlessly blend from rock-solid grooves to soaring flights of musical exuberance. Harmonic lead vocals either entwine, dialogue, or fuse with guitar melodies via vocorder, underscored by impeccable background harmonies and robust horns that synthesize magically with the keys and guitars. The lyrical journey? Messages filled with soul, exuding love, freedom, and inspiration.

As Brooke Blackburn aptly puts it: “Soul is the signature, Funk is the feel, and BLUES is the foundation.”

Diving into the album’s depth, Shakura S’Aida, the liner notes writer, says, “'SoulFunkn’BLUES' celebrates the pioneers, ancestors, and the forgotten tribes. They instilled in the Blackburn Brothers the essence of history, blues, rhythm, and life's heartbeat.”

Comprising Duane (lead vocals, organ, piano, vocorder), Brooke (guitar, bass, vocals), Cory (drums, percussion, vocals), Robert (guitar, vocals), and cousin Nathan (bass guitar), the Blackburn Brothers echo reminiscent sounds of iconic blues and soul groups, yet imprint their distinctive signature.

The Blackburn legacy boasts the Maple Blues Award for BEST NEW BAND in 2010 and a coveted JUNO nomination for BLUES ALBUM OF THE YEAR in 2016, among numerous other accolades.

Available globally from September 1, 2023, through Electro-Fi Records.

Quickly emerging young Texas musician Mathias Lattin won 1st place at the 2023 International Blues Challenge in the band category and the Best Guitarist Award at 20 years old. The excitement is spreading rapidly.

A graduate of the acclaimed Kinder High School for Performing and Visual Arts magnet program, Mathias was offered a scholarship at Boston’s Berklee College of Music – but the pandemic quickly scrapped those plans. Mathias came up quickly in the Houston scene, playing Jonn Del Toro Richardson’s blues jams when he was 13, and later joining Keeshea Pratt’s band. Houstonians like Annika Chambers and Shawn Allen served as mentors and inspiration. His training as a jazz guitarist is reflected in his soulful blues, jazz-inflected chords, and funky bass lines. Mathias wrote and produced all the songs on UP NEXT.

In a recent Living Blues article, Lattin expresses his feeling for the awesome power of music: "Music has literally been able to save people's lives. The stories that it can tell, the emotions that it can communicate, it's a powerful thing. It makes us move, It makes us feel. It makes us—for lack of a better term—human. And without that, this world would be a whole different place, a different experience. Without that, it would all be less human, more mechanical."

This fall Mathias and his band are hitting the road hard in support of the new record. He recently joined Joe Bonamassa's Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea Cruise as a special guest of Christone "Kingfish" Ingram, performed at the Big Blues Bender in Las Vegas, and he's psyched for the Telluride Festival and the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise.

The first single from the album, dropped September 15th, is “Lose Some Weight,” a driving funky blues with a twist, a diet plan that no girlfriend wants to hear: “Your loving tastes so good / So good I just can’t breathe / I need to lose some weight / So I guess you’ve gotta leave.” Yes, Mathias’s lyrics are as sharp-edged as his guitar playing.

What they’re saying about Matthias Lattin:

“It's good to see Mathias getting out there as a solo artist, he's a very talented young man and we definitely need more soldiers to help keep the Blues striving!”

—Ronnie Baker Brooks

“Smooth vocals, awesome songwriting, and dope guitar work, really great album, original!“

—Christone “Kingfish” Ingram

“This album is a complete vibe. From song to song feels like I’m right there, front and center! Great guitar tone! It’s a must have!”

—Mr. Sipp

Bob’s brilliant harmonica work is the connecting thread, effortlessly tying together a great variety of blues styles and always serving the song. Guest vocalists include Bobby Rush, Thornetta Davis, John Primer, Carl Weathersby, Johnny Rawls, Francine Reed, Oscar Wilson, Eugene Hideaway Bridges, Tia Carroll, Diunna Greenleaf, Willie Buck, Jimi Primetime Smith, Sugaray Rayford, and Lurrie Bell.

In addition to the vocalists, this album features some of today’s best blues instrumentalists, including Bob Margolin, Bob Stroger, Anthony Geraci, Ben Levin, Johnny Burgin, Kid Ramos, Billy Flynn, Bill Stuve, Fred Kaplan, Dave Keyes, Doug James, Johnny Main, Johny Rapp, Yahni Riley, Kedar Roy, Troy Sandow, Mike King, Brian Fahey, June Core, Steven Hodges, Wes Starr and more!

Listening to this album is like going to the best possible blues festival filled with one heartfelt performance after another. Please join Bob Corritore in his blues journey and enjoy his latest and greatest offerings!

When the 25-year-old Bob Coritore moved from Chicago to Phoenix Arizona in 1981, he never expected to be creating a Southwestern Mecca for the Blues — it just worked out that way. Bob was soon joined by old friend Louisiana Red, and before long they were playing all over town. Drummer Chico Chism soon followed. Bob started doing a weekly blues radio show, and in 1991 he opened the now legendary blues club the Rhythm Room. He would book his favorite down-home blues artists at the Rhythm Room, and while these artists were in town he would offer a recording session to accompany the booking. The end results were numerous amazing performances captured for posterity and finally available to the public for the first time via Bob’s “From The Vaults” Series.

Bob continues to produce recordings with today's top blues artists, pairing up in albums featuring Bob with contemporary artists like John Primer, Bob Margolin, and Jimi "Primetime" Smith, along with his star studded "Bob Corritore & Friends" albums.

Sue Foley breaks out with her first electric live album, Sue Foley Live in Austin, Vol. 1, on Guitar Woman Records. Drawing on the inspiration from her early heroes, Foley branches out on this new release and delivers some hard-hitting blues rock tracks. It’s real and it’s tough as nails. This is Sue at the top of her game. It’s a set of deeply rockin’ blues recorded at the legendary Austin, Texas nightspot, The Continental Club. This album features eleven tracks, songs culled mostly from Sue’s vast catalog of 14 albums, going all the way back to 1992’s Young Girl Blues. The set has all the immediacy and excitement of a live performance, the ecstatic crowd responding to the band’s deep Texas blues energy and giving back in kind. Sue is at the peak of her powers, working with the tight dynamics of her compact band (Sue Foley – guitar & vocals, Corey Keller - drums, Jon Penner – bass, and guitarist Derek O’Brien guesting on selected tracks) to deliver the magic.

The first single, “New Used Car,” released September 3, 2023, is the title track of her 2006 album. It hasn’t mellowed over the years; it’s only gotten tougher. As Sue puts it: “'New Used Car' is stripped down, bare bones, with no bells and whistles – just the boys and me having fun. And, like a good blues rocker, it's meant to be played loud, especially while driving."

The second single, the Howlin’ Wolf/Willie Dixon classic “Howlin For My Darlin”, drops October 13, 2023, and the guitar playing evokes the joyful spirit of the exuberant Hubert Sumlin. Sue explains: "'Howlin for My Darlin' is one of my favorite Howlin' Wolf tunes. We stripped it down to its bones for an all out, two guitar throw down between me and Austin's legendary Texas blues stringer, Derek O'Brien. At one point you can hear me shout ‘O'Brien!’ cause I knew he was gonna try and win the round. That was too much fun."

Sue Foley Live in Austin, Vol. 1 drops on October 27, 2023, and it will surely cause more crowding on the shelves that already display Foley’s many Austin Music Awards, Blues Music Awards (from the Blues Foundation in Memphis, TN), as well as JUNO and Maple Blues Awards (from her native Canada).

WHAT THE MEDIA HAS TO SAY...

"Sue Foley has a way of making the blues explode from the bandstand, no matter the song or style. She imbues everything she plays with the living truth.”  –Bill Bentley, Americana Highways

“Lively it is!...Straight from the hip and from the heart groovaliciousness. Rock on!”  –Billy F Gibbons, ZZ TOP

"Sue and her band nail it at the legendary Continental Club in Austin. I've been a fan for years and am proud of her Canadian/Austin roots. Like many of the greats, she continues to grow and has found her own style building on the 'blues guitar woman' tag.”  –Holger Petersen – CBC/ CKUA Radio, Author, Music Aficionado

“Canada’s greatest blues guitarist.”  –Brad Wheeler, Toronto Globe and Mail

“Foley has a killer voice, an impossibly alluring blend of sex and innocence to go with those blazing guitar chops.” –Nick Cristiano, Philadelphia Inquirer

“I’ve been a Sue Foley fanatic for years. When Sue releases something new, my tail is already wagging! Foley Followers needed a ‘live’ release—It’s finally here! And damn, it sounds incredible. This is the way Sue Foley needs to be heard—Live, Loud ‘n Proud!”  –Cornel Bogdan, Host of “Tangled Up In Blues,” Cumulus Media, Inc.

“I am so excited to sign to Ruf Records.” Greene says, “Ruf is the place where Luther Allison and Walter Trout made some of the most important records of their careers. I’m thrilled to be a part of the blues rock guitar legacy that Thomas Ruf started with them.” Alastair is also elated about the opportunity to collaborate with producer JD Simo (Jack White, Phil Lesh, Luther Dickinson, War and Treaty, Chris Isaak) in his Nashville studio. “JD is an extraordinary guitar player, and also an incredibly talented artist and producer.”

Greene has previously released albums through Delta Groove Productions, Rip Cat Records, and more recently, with Tab Benoit’s Whiskey Bayou Records. “I am truly grateful for all the label opportunities I’ve had leading up to signing with Ruf,” shares Greene. “This feels like a natural, organic progression of my career and I couldn’t be happier.”

Label president Thomas Ruf raves, “Alastair Greene paid his dues with rock greats like Alan Parsons and Starship, and after years of performing his own brand of Blues Rock, it's exciting to see him realizing his full potential. We are proud to release Alastair’s forthcoming album and have him join the 2024 Blues Caravan tour along with Eric Johanson and Katarina Pejak.”

Alastair Greene is a multi-charting Top 10 Billboard artist. The Alastair Greene Band, which has drawn comparisons to Gov’t Mule, ZZ Top and Cream, has been traveling extensively throughout the United States, in addition to Greene performing over 100 recent support dates for Tab Benoit. And he has also had the opportunity to support Walter Trout on tours in the UK and Germany.

As Alastair Greene’s prolific and acclaimed career is in its third decade, Greene has arrived at a new, yet familiar destination. Following a 2018 live album that celebrated the 20th anniversary of his noteworthy Alastair Greene Band, and then his last solo collection in 2020, The New World Blues, produced by Tab Benoit, the singer-songwriter/guitarist returned with an inspired live album, Alive In The New World in 2023. Presently, Alastair will be releasing a brand new studio record in 2024 on the famed Ruf Records label.

A native of Santa Barbara CA, recently transplanted to Austin TX, Greene has taken his Blues-soaked rock into the 21st century, traversing a constantly changing global (and musical) landscape. He’s well-equipped for the challenge, carrying the diverse musical interests he developed at an early age, intrigued by his mother's piano-playing and a record collection that included The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, and Elton John. His father introduced the youngster to the sophistication of Bach and Beethoven, yet it was Greene’s grandfather, the late trumpeter Chico Alvarez – a member of the Stan Kenton Band in the 1940s and '50s – who inspired him to pursue a life in music.

As a youth, he took piano lessons and played the saxophone before discovering the guitar in high school. ‘80s heavy rock icons Iron Maiden and Def Leppard brought motivational thunder. Then, a vintage and seminal sound – the Blues – changed Greene’s course. Records by B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Johnny Winter, The Allman Brothers Band, and Stevie Ray Vaughan exposed the burgeoning guitarist to a trove of musical treasure.

He received a scholarship to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied for two years before returning in the early ‘90s to Southern California. Greene formed the Alastair Greene Band in 1997 and subsequently released 10 solo albums (including three live sets and a compilation record) over two decades. 2017’s studio effort, Dream Train, landed a four-star review and Best Album of the Year nod in DownBeat; 2018’s Live from the 805 was nominated for Rock Blues Album of the Year by Blues Blast Magazine, garnering inclusion on many ‘Best of 2018’ lists. 2020's The New World Blues debuted at number three on the Billboard blues chart, received accolades from Joe Bonamassa in his music blog and was featured on Joe's SiriusXM radio show. The single "Living Today" was one of the most played songs on SiriusXM Bluesville for much of the year. Greene also had exclusive premieres with Relix Magazine and a week-long exclusive premiere on DittyTV. He also graced the cover of multiple music magazines.

A much in-demand guitarist and vocalist, Greene’s rock credentials include eight years of international touring on guitar and vocals with the Alan Parsons Live Project (2010-2017), and major dates with Starship featuring Mickey Thomas; as a blues player he is a longtime regular and host at the Memphis-based Blues Foundation events, performances and showcases, has been a featured performer at the Big Blues Bender and the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise, and traveled extensively around the world while touring with Sugaray Rayford's band, which was nominated for a 2020 Blues Music Award with Greene.

Greene says “I endeavor to play the Blues. It’s some of my favorite music that is basically responsible for everything we love today!”

Blues Rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter, Alastair Greene’s career has been on a steady climb, a soaring musical journey, welcoming a continuous flow of new projects and challenges. With albums launched under esteemed labels like Delta Groove Productions, Rip Cat Records, and Tab Benoit’s Whiskey Bayou Records, he sets the stage for the release of his sixth studio album, marking his eleventh overall, in the Spring of 2024. This milestone album is part of a newly-signed multi-record deal with the revered blues giant, Ruf Records.

In the meantime, while not allowing the grass to grow under his feet, Greene is independently releasing a single of the Allman Brothers classic "Whipping Post" on December 15th, featuring Greene's solo performance on 12-string acoustic guitar and vocals.

Greene’s approach to the song evolved over time. As Alastair says, “Whipping post is one of those timeless songs that in my opinion encapsulates the mix of blues and rock in a totally unique way. I’d performed the song with my band occasionally. As a trio we had to approach it a little differently and I came up with some parts that helped fill it out. When I was recording acoustic singles for my last studio record with Sean McCue, I had some time at the end of the session and wanted to give “Whipping Post” a go. Sean had a 12-string acoustic guitar which I thought would sound cool. I tuned it down a full step to give it a bit of a darker sound. This acoustic version is live in the studio with no overdubs and was the first and only take we did of the song.”

I can’t take credit for the acoustic approach to this classic. Years ago my late friend and producer Robinson Eikenberry played me a version of Whipping Post recorded and sung by a woman named Lorna Hunt playing acoustic guitar and was backed by upright bass and possibly piano. It sounded so hauntingly beautiful and so raw. It really made an impression on me.

This song has a lot of importance to Greene, who states, “In my world, Gregg Allman is one of the most important songwriters, not to mention singers. Between seeing The Allman Brothers Band and his solo band I’ve seen him perform live more than any other musician, the only exception possibly being Warren Haynes. I got to meet Gregg very briefly once back in the mid-90s before he went on stage at the Ventura Theater in Ventura, CA. He just exuded “cool”. My version of Whipping Post is my way of paying tribute to and thanking him."

Sue Foley’s new acoustic solo album, ONE GUITAR WOMAN is a moving tribute to the female pioneers of guitar, the women whose music and lives delivered the inspiration and paved the way for those that followed. Sue honors artists spanning many decades and a whole spectrum of styles. She writes in her liner notes, “They were massively talented, and they all possessed courage and vision which transformed both their cultures and the story of the guitar.”

True to the album title, Sue performs all these songs with ONE GUITAR. While many of Sue’s fans are used to seeing her playing “Pinky,” her pink paisley Fender Telecaster through her Fender Bassman amp, for this album she chose a nylon-string acoustic guitar, a flamenco Blanca made by master luthier Salvadore Castillo, purchased by Sue on a 2022 excursion to Paracho, Mexico.

The first single, available now, is "Oh Babe It Ain’t No Lie", a delicately nuanced track from Elizabeth Cotten. Sue captures the playful yet plaintive tone of the original, but doesn’t imitate the voice of Cotten, who didn’t record until she was quite elderly. Sue sings in her own voice, which is strong and vibrant. "'Oh Babe It Ain't No Lie’ is one of my favorite songs to play on guitar,” says Sue. “I just love that Piedmont fingerpicking that was made famous by the incomparable, Elizabeth Cotten. Cotten had an original guitar style, as she played left-handed and upside down, so her songs are not easy to tackle. She also had such charm and character in her voice, and wit in her lyrics. Her songs can be challenging to learn but they're always so fun and satisfying when you figure them out. This one just makes me smile every time I play it.”

ONE GUITAR WOMAN also covers the hard-driving Memphis Minnie and icons like Maybelle Carter and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, as well as heroes like French classical guitarist Ida Presti, Tejano sensation Lydia Mendoza, and the often-underrated Charo. Less well-known but equally compelling are Southern blues women Geeshie Wiley and Elvie Thomas. All in all, the twelve tracks of this album pay deference to eight female guitarists.

Foley is a complete artist, and the album features her songwriting as well as her guitar playing and singing. “Maybelle’s Guitar,” is Sue’s original composition that incorporates Maybelle Carter’s signature “Carter Scratch” guitar style while telling the story of the vast influence and power of the Carter Family’s music. Lydia Mendoza’s Tejano classic “Mal Hombre” is performed in Spanish, and Foley contributes her own English-language verse, which is far superior to the translation.

The album includes two instrumentals: “Romance in A Minor” by virtuoso violinist Niccolò Paganini is derived from guitarist Ida Presti’s interpretation. Sue’s version is heart-rending. Also featured is the explosive flamenco “La Malagueña”, popularized by Charo.

The full album will be released worldwide on March 29, 2024 on Stony Plain Records.

Sue will soon be debuting her ONE GUITAR WOMAN show, a solo show which will celebrate the lives, stories and music of the female pioneers of guitar. It will incorporate multimedia elements and present some great music as well as uplifting, provocative stories of brave, trailblazing women. This show will be presented in theaters on select dates through 2024.

Sue Foley has released thirteen albums and won many awards, including the Blues Music Award for Traditional Female Artist of the Year, which she has won three consecutive times; she is once again nominated in this category for 2024.

Fans around the world know Sue Foley as an internationally acclaimed, highly decorated electric blues guitarist; but for those who think that’s the sum total of her musical identity, her upcoming ONE GUITAR WOMAN album will smash that pigeonhole to flying shards of kindling. Sue is a complete musician, with an astute and soulful relationship to the many styles of music that have emanated from a guitar over the past century. With her expressive voice and a single nylon-stringed guitar, she produces twelve tracks that pay homage to the female pioneers who have been her guiding lights and lit the way for her musical journey. The album honors icons including Elizabeth Cotten, Memphis Minnie, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, French classical guitarist Ida Presti, Southern blues women Geeshie Wiley and Elvie Thomas, Tejano sensation Lydia Mendoza, Charo, and for the second single, country music matriarch Maybelle Carter.

While Foley honors the other artists by performing their songs, for Maybelle Carter Sue created an original song, “Maybelle’s Guitar.” Utilizing Carter’s distinctive guitar style, she tells the story of the enormous influence the Carter Family’s music had across the country and beyond. Even during hard times like the Great Depression, Maybelle’s guitar and uplifting songs like “Can the Circle Be Unbroken” and “Wildwood Flower” raised people’s spirits. As Sue sings, “It launched a million dreams, it saved a million souls.” Carter’s innovative technique, called the “Carter scratch” consisted of using her thumb to play melodies on the bass strings while her index finger strummed the rhythm, and is often credited with guitar’s transition from rhythm to lead instrument. Sue notes, “Of all the guitar styles that I studied for this album, I found the Carter scratch to be the most challenging. To play it accurately, one must keep a rock steady rhythm while strumming the lead guitar parts in between the beats. It’s like rubbing one’s head and patting one’s belly simultaneously.”

The second single “Maybelle’s Guitar” droped Friday, March 1. The full album ONE GUITAR WOMAN will be released worldwide March 29, 2024 on Stony Plain Records.

Sue will soon be debuting her ONE GUITAR WOMAN show, a solo show which will celebrate the lives, stories and music of the female pioneers of guitar. It will incorporate multimedia elements and present some great music as well as uplifting, provocative stories of brave, trailblazing women. This show will be presented in theaters on select dates through 2025.

Prepare for a captivating musical journey with ONE GUITAR WOMAN, Sue Foley’s new solo acoustic tribute to female pioneers of guitar. Foley’s much-anticipated album drops on Stony Plain Records Friday, March 29th. The two current radio singles, Elizabeth Cotten’s “Oh Babe It Ain’t No Lie” and “Maybelle’s Guitar,” Sue’s original homage to country music matriarch Maybelle Carter, give a glimpse into the depth and variety of the song and style selections. The twelve inspiring tracks of this album also honor the hard-driving Memphis Minnie, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, French classical guitarist Ida Presti, Tejano sensation Lydia Mendoza, the often-underrated Charo, and less well-known but equally compelling Southern blues women Geeshie Wiley and Elvie Thomas. Foley not only chose songs associated with each of the artists (apart from the Maybelle Carter selection, which she wrote herself), she covered a wide range of styles and techniques including Piedmont fingerpicking, Flamenco, classical, the Carter Scratch and more.

As writer Meghan Roos notes in her Blues Rock Review interview, “ONE GUITAR WOMAN comes together as a careful and creative study of several women who influenced generations of guitar players. The challenges Foley embraced in mastering each artist’s unique playing style also give the album real stakes by pushing it beyond what most tribute albums try to achieve.”

True to the album title, Foley performs all the tracks on a single acoustic guitar, a nylon-string Flamenco guitar that she bought from a master luthier on a 2022 excursion to Paracho, Mexico. Sue notes in a recent Vintage Guitar interview that she chose the Flamenco guitar over a standard classical guitar because she could play it a little harder: “I wanted a flamenco because you can beat them up a little bit more than the classicals — classicals are very resonant and pristine, but a flamenco is a little more utilitarian. I needed something with a little more grit, and I decided on a beautiful Flamenca Negra from Salvador Castillo.” The audiophile-quality album was produced by Mike Flanigin, recorded by Chris Bell at Blue Rock Studios in Austin, and mastered to Dolby Atmos Surround Sound at Abbey Road Studios in London.

ONE GUITAR WOMAN is more than a tribute album. Foley doesn’t merely cover these artists’ songs; she absorbs their style and inhabits the soul of the music. Her guitar work is so deep and natural that it seems to rise from the same roots that gave birth to the originals, while her vibrant vocals bring new life to the lyrics and make the songs her own. Esteemed music writer Hal Horowitz notes in Rock & Blues Muse, “Most impressive is Foley’s compelling voice, always expressive even with the amps turned up to 10, but even more so here. She finds empathy with these women writers in her soulful interpretations of their lyrics, which wouldn’t have as much ache and clout if sung by a man.”

ONE GUITAR WOMAN was a voyage of self-discovery for Foley. As she says in the Final Words of her liner notes: “There’s something that transformed in me when I started to research these female pioneers of guitar. Knowing that they had persevered through decades of challenges and trials so that my trials were lessened has taught me humility, and having a clear understanding of their accomplishments makes me want to reach higher in my own career. They forged the path for all female guitarists, leaving us not just the trail, but a map of directions and the wisdom to navigate it.”
