'A was recorded in Fulham, London during the Summer of 1980 and was intended to become an Ian Anderson solo album. The tapes were therefore marked ‘A’ for Anderson, which is how the album got its name, but the label asked the band to release it as Jethro Tull. It first hit the street on 29th August 1980 in the UK and on 1st September the same year in the US.

The album featured guest star, Eddie Jobson, on keyboards and electric violin. Jobson was renowned for his use of synthesizers and his work with the likes of Roxy Music, Frank Zappa and Yes. In 2017 he won the ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award at the Progressive Music Awards and in 2019 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Roxy Music. Not surprisingly, ‘A’ was noted for its more synthesizer-based sound, something that divided fan’s opinions at the time!

Stay tuned for more news on this album in future…

25th October 2020 saw the 52nd anniversary of the Jethro Tull album, This Was. In November 1968, the debut album hit #10 in the British charts, partly thanks to great airplay from BBC Radio DJ John Peel. Just before the release in the U.S., guitarist Abrahams left to form “Blodwyn Pig,” primarily due to Anderson’s preference for a less blues-orientated future.

In June 1968, just before this album was recorded, Jethro Tull began a residency at London’s famed Marquee Club (where the ‘Stones and The Who also launched their careers). Band advisers failed to get Ian to give up the flute and let Mick do all the singing. The album was recorded without any record company contract presuming, correctly, that a deal could be made afterwards. Tull began their first US tour in January 1969, immediately after securing the services of guitarist Martin Barre. The album had little commercial impact in the US charts (#62) but the U.S. tour did earn the band a strong cult following.

For this new Jethro Tull collection, the album has been expanded with five unreleased tracks from the recording sessions, including a different take of the single “Working John, Working Joe,” an extended version of “Crossfire” and the outtake “Coruisk.” The 40th anniversary set also includes a live recording from November 1980 of the band’s full concert at the LA Sports Arena. The performance mixed new A tracks (“Black Sunday,” “Batteries Not Included” and “Uniform”) with older hits, like “Aqualung,” “Heavy Horses” and “Songs From The Wood.” A few of these live tracks first appeared in 1981 on Slipstream, a video collection originally released on VHS and Laserdisc. The full Slipstream video, which made its DVD debut in 2004, is also included in this anniversary edition. Here, the content has been newly remixed by Steven Wilson.

In the summer of 1972, Jethro Tull went to record in the renowned Château D’Herouville studio. The band quickly renamed it "Château D’isaster" after a series of equipment failures, bed bugs, and food poisoning. After part-recording a treasure trove of quirky material on master tapes, the project was abandoned.

The Château Tapes became the great lost album of Tull mythology, until 20 years later when Ian Anderson reworked and completed most of the original to release on Nightcap the album as the Château D’Isaster Tapes. The album received a makeover by Steven Wilson and is now available on vinyl for the first time as a 2LP set on 15th March.
