Today, Nettwerk Records is excited to announce the signing of Moonalice, the renowned Bay Area collective known for bringing peace, love, and happiness wherever they go. They are proud share a new version of the psychedelic soul anthem, “Time Has Come Today,” fronted by Lester Chambers, original member of The Chambers Brothers who also sang lead vocal on the original version. With an authenticity only possible from someone who has been on the front line of the fight for social justice, Lester breathes new life into the electrifying song.

"Time Has Come Today" is widely regarded as a landmark song from the psychedelic era of the late-1960s. It peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the fall of 1968. Peace and love were in the air, but this was also the time of the Civil Rights movement and the Equal Rights campaign which pushed for justice for all. Decades later, this song is still needed, and the message is just as powerful. Moonalice is proud to continue the fight for peace and justice and we hope this song inspires you to join in and do the same.

Like a tree with many branches, Moonalice’s members have collaborated with some of the most acclaimed artists in music, and performed in several pioneering and Grammy-winning bands. In addition to Lester Chambers, co-founder of The Chambers Brothers, bassist Pete Sears played on Rod Stewart’s monster hit “Maggie Mae” before co-founding Jefferson Starship. Drummer John Molo played in Bruce Hornsby and the Range, The Other Ones, and Phil Lesh & Friends. Moonalice’s founder, Roger McNamee, penned a recent Time magazine cover story and was Bono’s business partner for a dozen years. This only scratches the surface of the band’s numerous collective accomplishments, so it’s safe to say Moonalice’s roots extend deep and wide.

The exuberant Bay Area ten-piece delivers a unique brand of psychedelic soul and rock-tinged with Americana. But dig a little deeper and you’ll discover an unparalleled history of musicianship, activism, and a band ethos that’s more vital now than ever.

Along with Barry Sless (lead guitar and pedal steel) and Sears (bass), McNamee formed Moonalice and recorded their 2009 T Bone Burnett-produced self-titled debut album. The band later expanded to include Jason Crosby (keyboards), and newest members Lester Chambers, his son Dylan Chambers, and Erika, Rachel, and Chloe Tietjen of acclaimed Americana band the T Sisters on vocals.

“A lightbulb went off when Lester, Dylan and the T Sisters joined the band,” Sless says. “They have an infectious energy that catches the audience’s attention. All five of them bring a new spark. People realize they really have something to say.”

"Time Has Come Today"

After a brilliantly received debut at the 2019 LOCKN’ Festival featuring the new ten-piece lineup, the band suddenly found itself overwhelmed with bookings, until restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 outbreak derailed their plans. They took the opportunity to write and record new material and arrange captivating covers of tunes made famous by Lester Chambers and his former band The Chambers Brothers.

All members bring their formidable musical chops to the proceedings. At 81, Lester Chambers brings with him a lifetime of musical experience. The Chambers Brothers, whose 1968 hit “Time Has Come Today” earned them a gold record, were recently featured prominently in Questlove’s acclaimed 2021 documentary Summer of Soul.

The band’s ethos of “Love, Peace and Happiness,” taken from The Chambers Brothers’ song of the same name, is infused into everything they do. “I think an important part of Moonalice is the notion that each of us has an opportunity to make a difference,” McNamee says. “We’ve survived a pandemic and a zillion other things. It makes sense to look forward and think about the positive, and remind people that they have a shot at a better day ahead.”

Cloudchord (Derek VanScoten), the producer, guitarist, and genre bender specialist that is augmenting musical possibility into reality shares his new full-length LP Bloom Bap via Nettwerk. With Bloom Bap, Derek VanScoten’s Cloudchord project has put forth its greatest and most impossibly lush collection of tunes to date. This is the guitarist and producer’s first full-length album with Nettwerk after releasing the previous EPs, Sundrop and Tulips. Bloom Bap finds him crystallizing his aesthetic with rolling grooves and dense thickets of melody, establishing Cloudchord as an exciting voice in the soundful electronic landscape. Featuring collaborations with Emancipator, Big Gigantic, Braxton Cook, ProbCause, Adam Deitch of Lettuce, and more, Bloom Bap projects tranquility but never quite sits still, always excitedly shifting its own structure as these 15 songs wind down fascinating paths—and you, the listener, are always along for the ride.

Bloom Bap is the latest achievement from the Austin-hailing Derek’s accomplished career thus far, which began in earnest when he studied music recording in college after graduating early from high school to pursue music at large. While exploring the myriad textures that self-recording could afford a musician, VanScoten was further inspired by pivotal live experiences. He immersed himself in jazz and classical guitar studies, all the while digging through the fertile left-of-center instrumental hip-hop coming out of the Low-End Theory scene in Los Angeles.

Bloom Bap reflects VanScoten’s current infatuation with neo-soul music, as evidenced by the swirling curlicues of melody on the ProbCause and Braxton Cook collaboration “Cryin Heart” and the sparkling groove of “Soul Major” with Adam Deitch of Lettuce. At large, Bloom Bap showcases his ability to pull from various styles of guitar-playing across the history of music and twist them into new, interesting shapes—the perfect encapsulation of his Future Guitar aesthetic. “It’s about me taking guitar styles from the past and bringing them into the future with these modern beats,” shares Derek.

“I see no reason ever to stop because music is absolutely my favorite thing to do in the world. Music is my spirituality and my quest for truth. It’s always right there if you’re willing to listen for it” shares VanScoten

Label founder Jim West reflects, “It’s hard to believe over 40 years have passed since the birth of Justin Time Records and the launch of its first recording, the Oliver Jones Trio ‘Live at Biddles Jazz & Ribs.’ Over the label’s history we are looking at more than 600 album releases with some of the best musicians in the business. It is so important for me to note, and very proudly so, that our first three signings, Oliver Jones, Ranee Lee and Trevor W. Payne and the Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir are still with us today and great friends with whom we talk daily. Other musical talents such as the late great Oscar Peterson, Kenny Wheeler, Paul Bley, Kenny Werner, Diana Krall, World Saxophone Quartet, Fontella Bass, David Murray, Billy Bang, Susie Arioli, Bryan Lee, Matt Herskowitz, Carol Welsman, Dave Van Ronk, Rob McConnell, David Clayton-Thomas, Frank Marino and Hank Jones amongst many others have blessed the label with their talents. Added to this list are a new generation of artists such Emma Frank, Katherine Penfold, Halie Loren and Laura Anglade to name a few. How lucky we have been.”

In 2016, the Montreal International Jazz Festival presented Jim West with the Bruce Lundvall Award, named after the late American Blue Note executive and presented to a person from the media or music industry who has made a significant contribution to the development of jazz. In 2018, he received the Builder Award from the Canadian Independent Music Association’s CIMA Award, and in 2022 he was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada for his contributions to the Canadian recording industry, and for supporting and championing our country’s talent.

On the heels of their spirited reimagination of the Grateful Dead classic “Attics of My Life,” Bay Area collective Moonalice shares the tender acoustic version. Recorded completely live and led by the T-Sisters vocal trio of Erika, Chloe, and Rachel Tietjen, Moonalice pays homage to the great American songwriter Robert Hunter with arresting three-part harmonies. The song has become a staple in the band’s live set as the T’s give a gorgeous rendition of the Dead classic.

Speaking on the new recording, Rachel Teitjen explains, “The beautiful lyrics and melody of Attics of My Life drew us to this song and was the first Grateful Dead song the T Sisters recorded back in 2015. We had arranged it a capella, but the song soared to new heights when we brought our vocal arrangement to the band and combined our sister harmony with the band’s exceptional musicianship. This latest recording from Moonalice is a live take, and we were all deeply feeling the music. We hope you enjoy it!”

“Attics” follows Moonalice’s Live at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass live album release, highlighting their standout performance at the famed San Francisco festival where they debuted new single “Old & Proud.” The band has been busy working on a string of new music with Nashville songwriter and producer Dylan Altman that will feature on two upcoming companion EPs, one electric and one acoustic.

For Bay-area psychedelic soul collective Moonalice, making music is more than just a career; it’s in their blood. It’s family. The 10-piece group includes the father-son duo Lester and Dylan Chambers, the T-Sisters vocal trio of Erika, Chloe, and Rachel Tietjen, and a band of musicians that have performed together for long enough to call each other brothers: Barry Sless, Pete Sears, John Molo, Jason Crosby, and Roger McNamee.

On back-to-back EPs, Full Moonalice Vol. 1 & 2 (2022), and an acoustic album, Light Side of the Moonalice (2023), the band pays homage to their roots with stirring renditions of soulful classics (“Time Has Come Today,” “People Get Ready”) alongside brand-new original works (“Love Me Today,” “Woo Woo”) - winning the acclaim of Rolling Stone, Relix, American Songwriter, Ultimate Classic Rock, Goldmine Magazine, San Francisco Chronicle, and more.
