Today, 2X Grammy nominee and Vermont native, Grace Potter, announced the Grand Point Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting the arts in Vermont. Grand Point Foundation seeks to inspire a culturevation for all Vermonters, connecting their communities in celebration of art and culture.

Potter, who has been hailed as “one of the greatest living voices in rock today” by SPIN, will again host Grand Point North, a music and culture festival held in Burlington. This year’s festival will take place at the Waterfront Park on July 25-28 and will feature headlining sets from Potter herself, The Flaming Lips and The Head and The Heart, as well as sets from Michael Marcagi, and Anderson East. You can buy tickets HERE.

“Finding a place for artistic expression as a kid set me on the path for where I am today and I’ve been dreaming about how to support my beloved Vermonters for a while now. I witnessed how we showed up for each other as neighbors time and time again, throughout the pandemic and last year with the catastrophic flooding. I want to create that same activation and response for our artists.” Potter shares. “Art is an integral part of our community infrastructure and growing our arts community was a natural fit for me. The Grand Point Foundation will be dedicated to supporting existing arts and culture programs, along with building our own programmatic outreach.”

Grand Point North has a storied history in art curation and cultivation for the local Vermont community. Potter’s desire to expand on that community effort is the root of Grand Point Foundation. The foundation will support existing nonprofit and community organizations that are focused on arts education and cultural programming. In addition, GPF will award one creation stipend to a Vermont artist each year to support their vision in ‘keeping Vermont weird.’ International artist programs and workshops and an annual film festival in Burlington will follow.

Potter has always been committed to supporting the local Vermont community in every way. Last summer, she hosted a livestream to raise funds to uplift people after the floods. The fundraiser raised over $20,000 for The Vermont Community Foundation’s VT Flood Response and Recovery Fund.

Today, Los Lonely Boys announce the release of their first new album in 11 years. Out August 2nd via BMG, Resurrection marks a return to form for the GRAMMY-winning, multi-platinum trio of Texican brothers, who have performed everywhere from the GRAMMYs telecast to the World Series to recent tours with The Who. Lead single “Wish You Would” conjures the group’s classic sound, combining breezy guitar leads with hard-earned doses of wisdom.

Pre-order Resurrection, listen to “Wish You Would,” and

take a trip through the song’s animated music video: HERE

“It’s something we think people need to hear—especially the youth,” says bassist/vocalist Jojo Garza, speaking on “Wish You Would” and Resurrection. “When we’re young, we think we have it figured out. When you get older, you start to see things differently. Having kids of our own, we see their ambitions and ideas of what they want to be, so we want to be good parents. The message is, ‘Be careful what you wish for. There could be a false light, and we don’t want you to get hurt’.”

After an extended break from recording, Los Lonely Boys are making a triumphant return with Resurrection. Rejuvenated and more cosmically attuned than ever before, the album rekindles the sonic fire that bonds the Los Lonely Boys brotherhood, while also paying respects to Texas legends like Stevie Ray Vaughan and Freddy Fender, among others. The album was recorded at guitarist/vocalist Henry Garza’s home studio in St. Angelo, TX, and El Paso’s Sonic Ranch (Fiona Apple, Bon Iver, Snarky Puppy etc), and mixed live in Chicago by Chris Gelin at Opus Audio Labs.

This year Los Lonely Boys will also celebrate the 20th Anniversary of their self-titled debut, which reached double-platinum status and yielded the gold-certified, generational smash "Heaven," which earned them a GRAMMY Award for Best Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and performance on the awards telecast. The brothers’ follow-up Sacred bowed at #2 on the Billboard 200, paving the way for fan favorites Forgiven, Rockpango, and Revelation. Along the way, Los Lonely Boys collaborated with legends such as Santana, Willie Nelson, and Dr. John.

Even as they’ve been away from the studio, Los Lonely Boys have continued to tour tirelessly for decades, and this year they’ve hit the road again for an extensive, months-long run across the US. They will also perform on select shows alongside long time friends Los Lobos. See dates below, and find tickets here.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the celebrated Talking Heads and Jonathan Demme’s concert film Stop Making Sense, the set will be re-released as a 2LP and 2CD/Blu-ray set this summer.

Released last year, the sold-out Deluxe Edition of the soundtrack will return as a 2-LP black vinyl on Rhino.com and retail and 2-LP crystal clear vinyl at Barnes and Noble. Both variants feature a 12-page booklet with liner notes from all four band members –Tina Weymouth, David Byrne, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison—and band photos. The 2CD/Blu-ray version includes the entire 28-page booklet from last year’s Deluxe Edition and a Dolby Atmos mix of the complete concert, mixed by Jerry Harrison and E.T. Thorngren, who also mixed the original release. Both will be available on July 26. Pre-order now.

The band appeared together for a sold-out screening and Q&A hosted by Andy Richter last night at the Pantages Theater, the same theater at which Stop Making Sense was recorded. They were joined by Blondshell, who performed “Thank You For Sending Me an Angel.” Another special screening with the band will occur in Brooklyn at the King’s Theater on June 13, with the Q&A hosted by Questlove and The Linda Linda’s performing “Found a Job.” The two events cap off a banner year of celebrations for what many consider to be the best concert film of all time.

The inspiration for Stop Making Sense came when director Jonathan Demme saw Talking Heads perform during the band’s 1983 tour for Speaking in Tongues. Afterward, he approached them with the idea of making the show into a concert film. They agreed and worked together over the next few months to finalize the details. Ultimately, Demme filmed three shows at Hollywood’s Pantages Theater in December 1983 to create Stop Making Sense.

The concert film presents a retrospective of the band up to that point, with a performance that weaves together songs from all six of its studio albums. The show progresses methodically, opening with Byrne onstage performing “Psycho Killer” alone with a drum machine. After each song, he’s joined by a new band member until Weymouth, Frantz, and Harrison are all on stage with him. The group continues to grow throughout the concert as members of the stellar touring band are added: keyboardist Bernie Worrell, percussionist Steve Scales, guitarist Alex Weir, and backup singers Lynn Mabry and Ednah Holt.

The band performs 18 songs in Stop Making Sense, including its recent single at the time, “Burning Down The House.” That summer, the song was in heavy rotation on radio and MTV, helping the song become the band’s first top 10 hit in America. It was, however, a different song from Speaking in Tongues that was destined to deliver one of the film’s signature moments. Talking Heads would perform “Girlfriend Is Better” wearing the now iconic, oversized suit inspired by costumes worn in traditional Japanese theater. For good measure, a picture of David Byrne in the suit also graces the album cover.

Stop Making Sense focuses mainly on music by Talking Heads but does include a few songs recorded outside the band: “Genius Of Love” by Tom Tom Club, “What A Day That Was” and “Big Business” from Byrne’s 1981 album, The Catherine Wheel. Limited edition vinyl versions of both of these albums, along with Harrison’s The Red And The Black, were released for this year’s Record Store Day.

When it arrived in September 1984, Stop Making Sense was an artistic and commercial triumph. The film had people dancing in theatre aisles, and the soundtrack sold over two million copies. Just last year, the Library of Congress added Stop Making Sense to the National Film Registry in recognition of its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance.

Weymouth praises Demme as a collaborator: “…Jonathan was a very enthusiastic, highly adaptive, and imaginative guy who was just as good a listener as he was a talker and collaborator. From the get-go you just got the impression he was as flexible as he was disciplined. Being team players, that boded well for a great relationship and a great film!”

Harrison says the film still holds up today: “To me, Stop Making Sense has remained relevant because the staging and lighting techniques could have been created in a much earlier time period. For example, Vari-Lights, lights with motors to re-aim them, had just come into vogue. Had we used them, there would have been a timestamp on the film, and it eventually would have felt dated...The absence of interviews, combined with the elegant and timeless lighting, created a film that can be watched over and over.”

Byrne says it’s interesting that this album was – for many people – an introduction to Talking Heads. “We had done a live album before this, but coupled with the film, and with the improved mixes and sound quality, this record reached a whole new audience. As often happens, the songs got an added energy when we performed them live and were inspired by having an audience. In many ways, these versions are more exciting than the studio recordings, so maybe that’s why a lot of folks discovered us via this record.”

Frantz recalls the sheer joy surrounding the entire Stop Making Sense experience. “I’m talking about real, conscious, transcendent joy… I’m talking about what the Southern gospel people call ‘getting happy,’ which means ‘to be filled with the Spirit.’ That is what happened to us onstage every night, and from my seat behind the drums, I recognized that this was happening to the audience too. Joy was visible in front of me and all around me every night.”

Since its debut 30 years ago, Ween’s Chocolate and Cheese has become an alternative rock classic and a highwater mark for Gene and Dean Ween’s polished songwriting and irreverent humor.

To celebrate the anniversary, Rhino will release Chocolate And Cheese (Deluxe Edition) on August 2. This 3-LP set features a newly remastered version of the original album, plus 15 previously unreleased demos and outtakes. Available at Rhino.com and Ween.com. Pre-order HERE. The music will be available from digital and streaming platforms on the same day.

A previously unreleased version of “Junkie Boy” is available today digitally. Listen HERE.

Anticipation for Chocolate and Cheese was fueled by the success of “Push Th’ Little Daisies” from Ween’s previous album, 1992’s Pure Guava. When it arrived in September 1994, Chocolate and Cheese marked a new chapter for Dean and Gene (Mickey Melchiondo and Aaron Freeman) as they transitioned from four-track home recordings to a professional studio. Despite the equipment upgrade, the band remained gloriously weird on songs like “I Can’t Put My Finger On It,” “Voodoo Lady,” and the tribute to Parliament-Funkadelic guitarist Eddie Hazel, “A Tear For Eddie.”

Melchiondo sifted through hundreds of hours of tapes before he and Freeman chose their favorites to assemble the bonus tracks. Melchiondo jokes, “…keeping with Ween tradition, Aaron and I probably picked all the wrong songs, mixed them, and now here they are.” All of the bonus tracks are previously unreleased, including non-album gems like “Warm Socks,” “Smooth Mover,” and “Dirty Money,” as well as demos for the album tracks “Candi,” “Take Me Away,” “Voodoo Lady,” and “Roses Are Free.”

Renowned audio engineer Bernie Grundman–best known for his esteemed work on classic albums such as Michael Jackson’s Thriller and Steely Dan’s Aja–remastered the album for the Deluxe Edition using the original flat master tapes to optimize audio fidelity. Grundman also mastered the set’s 15 bonus tracks, sourced from cassettes and DAT tapes from the band’s extensive archive.

In the Deluxe Edition’s liner notes, Melchiondo says listening to the collection takes him back to the album’s creation. “When I hear it, I feel like I’m listening to an autobiography of our lives in the early to mid-’90s…If it sounds like we had fun making it, we did. That’s kind of what Ween is all about, though.”

Catch Ween this August at select dates across the Pacific Northwest and on September 27 for their sold-out show at the Mann Music Center in Philadelphia, playing the entire Chocolate and Cheese album for the 30th anniversary. For more information, visit ween.com/tour.

Today, to celebrate the launch of their extensive summer tour, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss release their own rendition of "When The Levee Breaks" (Rounder Records). With the song having been a part of the country, blues and rock n roll canon for nearly a century, the duo's smoldering take quickly became a climactic, ephemeral staple of their setlists over the past several years. Now, as more and more fans are getting to experience the fiddle-led, harmony-laden and dirge-like arrangement of a perennial favorite, Plant and Krauss are pleased to present their live version as a gift for all to hear.

Listen to "When The Levee Breaks" via Rounder, and watch the visual here:

https://found.ee/RPAKLeveeYouTube

"When The Levee Breaks" is Robert Plant and Alison Krauss' first single since 2021's chart-topping album, Raise The Roof, and it channels a similar and singular combination of musical energies: "warm, mystical and at times slightly foreboding" (Variety). The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and 27x GRAMMY-winner are currently performing highlights from the record – as well as hits from 2007's Raising Sand, and choice reimaginings of Led Zeppelin cuts – on a run of nearly 40 dates across North America. Reunited once more, and much sooner than the twelve years that passed between their previous two tours, the two vocalists are joined by an ace ensemble of guitarist JD McPherson, drummer Jay Bellerose, bassist Dennis Crouch, string player Stuart Duncan (who is showcased on the stunning modal fiddle solo), and multi-instrumentalist Viktor Krauss, all of whom can be heard on "When The Levee Breaks."

After kicking off with a sold-out show at the legendary Cain's Ballroom earlier this week, with a performance hailed as "a chemistry lesson for the ears" (Tulsa World), Robert Plant and Alison Krauss are continuing on to a series of amphitheaters, pavilions, opera houses and other historic venues from coast to coast, from now until September. They will also join Willie Nelson & Family, Bob Dylan and Celisse for a stint of stops on the Outlaw Music Festival, and recently spoke to NPR's Weekend Edition, Rolling Stone, USA Today and Billboard about what crowds can expect on this tour, named one of the summer's most anticipated by Pitchfork, Entertainment Weekly, AARP and more.

RCA Records and Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release ‘MEMPHIS,’ the definitive and first fully comprehensive collection of Elvis Presley’s hometown recordings, on Friday August 9. Over 111 tracks, ‘MEMPHIS’ captures Presley from his earliest sessions at Sun Studio - which occurred 70 years ago this Summer - to his final recordings in Graceland’s Jungle Room. Along the way, the Bluff City serves as both home and muse to Presley, playing a pivotal role in the dramatic arc of his artistry as he finds creative rebirth at American Sound in 1969, overcomes personal struggles at Stax in 1973, and brings his most extravagant and spellbinding live show to the Mid-South Coliseum in 1974. Produced by noted Elvis authority Ernst Jørgensen, with rare archival material and new liner notes by GRAMMY-winning music historian Robert Gordon, ‘MEMPHIS’ will be released in 5CD, 2LP and digital configurations, giving fresh insight into the bond between Elvis and his eternal home.

With the exception of the Sun recordings, all tracks on ‘MEMPHIS’ were newly mixed by four-time GRAMMY-winner Matt Ross-Spang at Southern Grooves in Memphis, with overdubs stripped away - leaving the listener with only what Elvis heard live in the studio. With this intimacy, new revelations abound - from Elvis’ intuitive chemistry with “The Memphis Boys” at American, to the subtle way he builds his vocal phrasing around his backing singers in the Stax sessions, or the palpable joy he brings to his final sessions in the Jungle Room. Through it all, the listener is standing next to Elvis - hearing exactly what he is hearing.

Matt Ross-Spang, Robert Gordon and Ernst Jørgensen discuss ‘MEMPHIS’ and its significance here: https://elvis.lnk.to/BehindTheBoxset

Listen to Ross-Spang’s mix of “Polk Salad Annie,” live from Memphis’ Mid-South Coliseum, here: https://Elvis.lnk.to/PSAMEMPHIS

'Memphis'

From the very first notes of ‘MEMPHIS,’ the city’s immense influence on Elvis is clear. At Sun Studio - located within walking distance from an 18-year-old Elvis’ apartment complex - he channeled a heady mix of Beale Street blues, the sounds of Dewey Phillips’ “Red, Hot & Blue” show on local radio station WHBQ, and the all-night gospel performances he attended at nearby Ellis Auditorium. As has been well documented, that distinctly Memphis blend would result in a singular, defining moment in the development of rock n roll.

When Presley returned to recording in Memphis nearly fifteen years later as a cultural phenomenon and bankable film star, he sensed a different pulse in the city. Teaming up with legendary producer Chips Moman at American Sound Studio, far from the glitz of Hollywood or the gloss of Nashville, Elvis sought out songs that reflected a more gimlet-eyed worldview, and put down some of the greatest performances of his career. Yielding indelible hits like “In The Ghetto” and “Suspicious Minds,” these sessions heralded an earthier sound - and an astonishing comeback for Presley.

The Stax sessions of 1973 came during a tumultuous time in Elvis’ personal life. As he wrestled with the dissolution of his marriage and personal demons, the frenetic energy of his day-to-day life came through in the performances. On songs like “Promised Land” that energy radiates, while other selections like Tony Joe White’s “For Ol’ Times Sake” grapple with loneliness in the face of fresh heartbreak. Presley returned to Stax in December of that year revitalized, clearly connecting to material like “I Got A Feeling In My Body” and “Loving Arms” with a familiarly-electric charisma.

Bringing his game-changing Vegas show back home to Memphis in 1974, Elvis appeared with a full orchestra and more than 20 musicians accompanying him on stage. Here, he performed songs by many early rock & roll legends - including Jerry Lee Lewis, Lloyd Price, Little Richard and Fats Domino - and also delivered a GRAMMY-winning rendition of “How Great Thou Art.” “It’s always been said that a person cannot return to their hometown,” Elvis says towards the end of the show. “But you have disproven that theory completely.”

Recording his final songs using RCA’s mobile rig at Graceland in 1976, Elvis sings with a passion that defies his poor health. These stripped recordings strike an emotional chord as he interacts beautifully with his backing vocalists on “Danny Boy” (his father’s favorite song) or finds a deep pocket on the swinging “For The Heart.” The new unadorned versions of the Jungle Room sessions make evident Elvis' effort to find the sound and energy that thrills him, and imbue familiar material with personal emotion.

When asked what he missed about his hometown on his way back from the army, a 25-year-old Elvis answered: “Everything. I mean that—everything.” As he found strength in the city across so many stages of life, ‘MEMPHIS’ makes clear that sentiment was as enduring and powerful as it was reciprocal with the city itself.

The new ‘MEMPHIS’ collection will be celebrated throughout Elvis Week 2024 this Summer, including two special events at Graceland. On August 13, Graceland Soundstage will host an “Elvis: Back in Memphis” concert - blending live performances with storytelling from the musicians and vocalists who were part of these legendary recording sessions. Confirmed participants include American Sound drummer Gene Chrisman and vocalist Donna (Rhodes) Morris; and Larry Strickland from the Jungle Room Sessions.

The following day (August 14), Sony will host a special ‘MEMPHIS’ listening event and Q&A at Graceland’s Guest House Theater. Details and special guests will be announced for this event, and free tickets can be reserved at: https://smartseat.graceland.com/?itemNumber=39664

Van Halen’s ninth studio album, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, debuted at #1 and stayed there for three weeks during the summer of 1991. It was the third consecutive #1 album from singer Sammy Hagar, guitarist Eddie Van Halen, drummer Alex Van Halen, and bassist Michael Anthony.

An Expanded Edition of the album is arriving this summer from Rhino, including a newly remastered version of the original, along with previously unreleased audio and video footage from Van Halen’s December 4, 1991, concert in Dallas, Texas.

FOR UNLAWFUL CARNAL KNOWLEDGE (EXPANDED EDITION) will be available on July 12 and includes two LPs, two CDs, and a Blu-ray. PRE-ORDER HERE.

Rhino.com will have an exclusive bundle featuring the release and a set of four 7” singles, including “Poundcake” / “Pleasure Dome,” “Top Of The World” / “In ‘N’ Out,” “Right Now” (Organ Version) / “Man On A Mission,” and “Right Now” (Guitar Version) / “The Dream Is Over” (Instrumental Version).

Originally released in June 1991, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge was an immediate success. It reached triple platinum certification and earned Van Halen its first Grammy® Award for Best Hard Rock Performance and American Music Award® for Favorite Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Album. Producer and engineer Bernie Grundman expertly remastered and cut lacquers for this edition, ensuring pristine sound quality.

The Expanded Edition includes previously unreleased alternate versions of “Right Now” and “The Dream Is Over.” The main attraction, however, has to be the previously unreleased concert footage from Van Halen’s December 4, 1991, performance in Dallas. Captured during the “For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge Tour,” this electrifying show is a powerful example of Van Halen’s unparalleled stage presence.

The show’s setlist mixes new songs (“Judgement Day” and “Poundcake”) with songs from 5150 and OU812 (“Best Of Both Worlds” and “Finish What Ya Started”). The band also played “Panama,” a hit from its time with singer David Lee Roth, plus two of Hagar’s hits, “I Can’t Drive 55” and “There’s Only One Way To Rock.”

In addition, the Blu-ray includes the official music videos for “Poundcake,” “Runaround,” “Top Of The World,” and the 1992 MTV VMA Video Of The Year winner, “Right Now.” “Finally, the remastered album is included in the set as a double LP, featuring an etching of the Van Halen logo on the fourth side.

The Cactus Blossoms - Minneapolis-based brother duo Jack Torrey and Page Burkum - have announced their new album Every Time I Think About You, to be released August 30 via their own Walkie Talkie Records. The collection of ten new, original songs finds the brothers - along with longtime bandmates Jeremy Hanson (drums), Jacob Hanson (guitar) and Phillip Hicks (bass) - defying easy categorization as they jump from freewheeling rockers to gentle pop ballads, shedding the weight of expectation and creating a collection that feels timeless and devil-may-care in equal measure.

Confirming this duality, The Cactus Blossoms have shared two new songs today - chooglin’ heartbreak anthem “There She Goes,” which premiered on SiriusXM’s Outlaw Country, and the album’s gently devastating title track “Every Time I Think About You.”

Pre-order Every Time I Think About You here: http://thecactusblossoms.com/every-time-i-think-about-you

Every Time I Think About You was recorded at Minneapolis' legendary Creation Audio - where hometown garage-rock heroes The Trashmen cut "Surfin' Bird," and The Replacements made Tim. There, The Cactus Blossoms once again teamed with engineer/mixer Alex Hall (JD McPherson, Nick Lowe) for their most commanding full-band sessions to date. But behind the T. Rex strut of “Keep Walkin” or the “travelin’ light” protagonist in “Is It Any Wonder,” the songs have an itinerant quality.

“Even if you don’t set out to write songs with a theme in mind, one tends to present itself,” says Torrey. “This record keeps returning to the idea of ‘moving on’ — from one place to another, from people and situations that bring you down, from loss and grief.”

In addition to the album news, The Cactus Blossoms have announced a North American tour for this fall; with highlights including two nights in New York City, a trip to AmericanaFest in Nashville and a hometown release show at St. Paul, MN’s 1000-capacity Fitzgerald Theater. In keeping with their Made-in-Minnesota ethos, the cover art for Every Time I Think About You is centered around a painting by one of the state’s most acclaimed painters, George Morrison, a founding figure of Native American modernism: “Spirit Path. New Day. Red Rock Variation: Lake Superior Landscape,” which hangs in the Minnesota Museum of American Art.

Every Time I Think About You follows the release of the group’s 2022 full-length One Day, praised by Holler as a “contender for Americana album of the year.” Also in 2022, The Cactus Blossoms released If Not For You - a covers collection in tribute to their home-state hero Bob Dylan. Previous releases like 2019’s Easy Way saw their “voices blend beautifully to create a rich, vibrant sound” (NPR), with the Minneapolis Star-Tribune adding: “if you don’t visibly swoon at least two dozen times listening to this album, you need to get out and look up at the stars more.”
