GroundUP Music is proud to present the first annual GroundUP Music Festival in Miami Beach, FL, February 10-12, 2017. Hosted by two-time Grammy winning artist Snarky Puppy – “a barnstorming, groove-centric instrumental act with a rabid fan base and a blithely unplaceable style” (New York Times) – the festival will feature a set from the band each day along with performances from an eclectic list of international superstars including two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee David Crosby, the new A Prairie Home Companion host and founder of the Punch Brothers, Chris Thile, mind-boggling guitar legend Charlie Hunter, Quincy Jones’ London-based phenom and multi-instrumentalist Jacob Collier, and the most celebrated Cuban conguero, Pédrito Martinez, along with dozens of other remarkable artists.

The North Beach Bandshell’s Amphitheater and sprawling adjacent Palm Grove Park and beachfront complex will host the festival during the day with top local chefs serving inspired food and libations in the park. Partner hotel, the Deauville Beach Resort - site  of the Beatles’ first U.S. appearance after the Ed Sullivan Show – will serve as the venue for late night concerts on two stages featuring new artists and surprises.

Since its inception 13 years ago, Snarky Puppy’s grass-roots approach to the changing music industry has met major critical and commercial success. The band’s approach will be no different as they debut their inaugural festival. “After years of playing festivals ourselves, we’re very in touch with what we like and what we don’t. We’re trying to construct an ideal environment for both the listeners and performers,” says Snarky Puppy bandleader and GroundUP Music CEO Michael League. This will be achieved by a limited capacity of 1,500 at the festival each day, a series of special events from performers (ranging from film screenings and music business panels to scavenger  hunts), a central hub for artists and attendees at The Deauville, and an integrated and informal environment which will allow attendees to interact with the artists.

With their entrepreneurial spirit, Snarky Puppy and GroundUP Music opted to produce this entire festival independently, without any major promoter or sponsor. They instead turned to Miami native and former YoungArts CEO, and now GroundUP Music Executive Director, Paul Lehr, to help create the vision and spearhead the nascent festival. Lehr states, “Rather than the typical festival with hordes of people crammed together, overlapping music sets with mediocre sound, and giant barriers between artists and fans, we’re creating an intimate and immersive experience where the fans can appreciate the music up close in a setting with great acoustics surrounded by an idyllic park and beach, and actually interact with the legendary artists in the masterclasses and workshops that the artists themselves will lead throughout the festival.”

“In addition to the members of the band, our family extends to our crew and musicians from around the world,” says League. “We wanted to celebrate the unifying spirit of music by bringing everyone together for a few days.” The little empire includes the GroundUP Music label (distributed by Verve/Universal), for which many of the artists performing at the festival have recorded. That includes the most recent addition to the family, David Crosby, who will celebrate the release of his GroundUP debut, Lighthouse, and the world-premiere performance of League’s new project, Bokanté.

As “the most popular jazz band on the planet” (Downbeat), Snarky Puppy had a long list of   options   for   festival   locations.   They   ultimately   chose   Miami   for   the   ease   of international travel, climate, global feel of the city, and richness in musical culture, with the goal of creating a lasting impact on the community.

The first step towards building roots in the city is the partnership with the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music and their great annual music festival, Festival Miami.  “This year, however, instead of Festival Miami doing the entire program on their campus, they have partnered with us and made their grand finale the GroundUP Music Festival,” says League, “and we’ve tried to create a seamless transition from one event to the other.” Saluting his many contributions to Miami and the larger musical community, GroundUP Music Festival is also thrilled that the Frost School’s Dean Shelly Berg will perform with his own band during Saturday’s GroundUP program. Other local talent includes Miami’s own Roosevelt Collier and the Lee Boys (all of whom are accomplished sacred steel guitar players) and Fort Lauderdale native John Medeski, who brings his brand new New Orleans-infused project “Mad Skillet.”

Not only are many local artists involved, but the local community has been extremely supportive of the project. Per GroundUP Executive Director Paul Lehr, “our amazing partners at the Rhythm Foundation (who run the North Beach Bandshell), the City of Miami Beach, Michael Spring and the Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, and the University of Miami’s Patricia and Philip Frost School of Music and Dean Shelly Berg, have all come together to help make this happen.”

With room for only 1500 people a day, tickets will go fast. The intent is to keep the space comfortable and intimate in order to create an optimal experience for both the audience and artists.

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) MDC Live Arts and Rhythm Foundation will co- present an evening of Persian classical music with Sahba Motallebi and Naghmeh Farahmand at 8 p.m., on Saturday, Jan. 27, at the North Beach Bandshell.

The stars—and initiatives—aligned for two of Miami’s premier presenting organizations to bring forth this rare event. MDC Live Arts, with Ojala/Inshallah: Wishes from the Muslim World season, is designed to explore the diversity of Muslim culture through the arts and challenge widespread assumptions concerning contemporary Muslim identity. The Rhythm Foundation’s Axis of Love series, injects positivity and empathy into the global conversation through presenting instrumental, traditional and innovative sounds from the conflict zones of the Middle East and Africa.

The collaboration launches with Persian classical musician Sahba Motallebi on Saturday, Jan 27 and continues with Iraqui trumpeter Amir ElSaffar on Saturday, March 3 and Moroccan trance group Innov Gnawa on Saturday, May 5. In an immersive environment. The audience surrounds performers in an in- the-round stage setup. The evening also features culture-specific traditional snacks and sweets to engage the audience in a multi-sensory experience.

Persian classical music is a deeply spiritual and contemplative art form central to Iranian identity. One of the world’s oldest and greatest musical traditions, it is built around melodic phrases organized into hundreds of pieces and 12 larger systems, which a master musician weaves into a larger improvisational performance. Such a master musician is Sahba Motallebi, who remains rooted in this ancient tradition, while incorporating Iranian folk and contemporary elements to create a musical experience that engages both the mind and the soul. She will be accompanied by Naghmeh Farahmand on tonbak (goblet drum) and daf (frame drum).

The two musicians will also participate in engagement activities at MDC’s Wolfson Campus, addressing Honors College students, with discussions about their backgrounds and cultural identities.

About Sahba Motallebi

Sahba Motallebi is a modern virtuoso of the tar and setar, lute-like stringed instruments central to Persian classical music. One of its few female soloists, she was named Best Tar Player at the Iranian Music Festival for four consecutive years. She began her studies at the Tehran Conservatory of Music at age 14, helped found the women’s music ensemble Chakaveh and later joined the Iranian National Orchestra, which launched her international career. She is now regarded as an ambassador of classical Persian music in the U.S.

About Naghmeh Farahmand

Naghmeh Farahmand is the daughter of Mahmoud, one of the leading percussion masters in Iran. She started playing the tonbak at age six under the supervision of her father, and was encouraged to learn a melodic instrument to gain insight into the melodic aspect of music, as this would make her a better accompanist. She began playing the santur under the guidance of Faramarz Payvar and Pashang Kamkar. Besides learning traditional music, Farahmand found the daf to be very powerful and spiritual and began learning Sufi and Kurdish rhythms from Bijan Kamkar and Masoud Habibi. She has performed in many well- known traditional ensembles in Iran and at festivals around the world. Farahmand has also performed with ney master Hassan Nahid and famed vocalist Hengameh Akhavan. In 2010, she moved to Canada and started working with musicians in world music and jazz. She is the founder of the Sharghi percussion ensemble.

They’ve become one of Brooklyn’s freshest exports – nine charismatic men and women brightly outfitted to have their colorful nature match their expressive voice.

Energetic splashes of funk, alternative, rock, R&B, and psychedelia color the music of Turkuaz. Balancing male-female harmonies, strutting guitars, wild horn arrangements, and interminable grooves, this spirit takes shape in the color donned by each respective member on stage nightly via larger-than-life performances.

The Brooklyn-based nonet —Dave Brandwein [guitar, vocals], Taylor Shell [bass], Craig Brodhead [guitar, keys], Michelangelo Carubba [drums], Chris Brouwers [trumpet, keys], Greg Sanderson [tenor sax], Josh Schwartz [baritone sax, vocals], Sammi Garett [vocals], and Shira Elias [vocals]—ignite an explosion of energy punctuated by neon hues, deft musicality, and show-stopping sing-alongs on their fifth full-length album, Life In The City.

The album, which includes co-production work from Jerry Harrison of The Talking Heads, sees the band stretch their sonic palette and cover new ground lyrically as they grapple with reality and get personal, finding the light in what can sometimes be a dark world. Yet even in the midst of serious subject matter creeping in on this album, the musicianship of all nine band members and the group’s upbeat, fun-loving sensibility still shines through to give Turkuaz fans the joyous sound they’ve come to know over the last several years.

Today, Blue Note Jazz Festival announces a special Miami Beach Beach Pop Up in partnership with The Rhythm Foundation. Taking place over the first two weekends in June at the North Beach Bandshell, the pop-up will feature headline performances from George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Robert Glasper and special guests, and Buika.

“We’re very pleased to bring Blue Note Jazz Festival to Miami Beach featuring a star-studded array of iconic and important artists,” Blue Note’s Director of Programming Alex Kurland proclaims. “Our featured Blue Note programming spotlights influential titans of the music industry including George Clinton, Robert Glasper and Buika. With the challenges we've all gone through over the past year, we're grateful to be able to present great music in a truly great community. Cheers to these extraordinary artists, and once more being able to present concerts by Blue Note in the greater Miami marketplace with our friends at the Rhythm Foundation at the famed North Beach Bandshell!”

George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic will kick off Blue Note’s Miami programming on Friday, June 3. Recording both as Parliament and Funkadelic, George Clinton revolutionized R&B during the ’70s, twisting soul music into funk by adding influences from several late-’60s acid heroes: Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, and Sly Stone. The Parliament/Funkadelic machine ruled black music during the ’70s, capturing over 40 R&B hit singles (including three number ones) and recording three platinum albums.

Latin Grammy Award-winning vocalist Buika performs a hometown show on Saturday, June 4. Buika is a critically acclaimed jazz-influenced flamenco fusion singer from Spain who broke through to mainstream success in 2006 with her second solo album, Mi Niña Lola. Born Concha Buika in 1972 in Palma de Mallorca, a city on the Balearic Island of Majorca, Spain, she is the daughter of a political exile from the former Spanish colony Equatorial Guinea, a small country in Africa. Influenced by her mother's love of jazz, she began her singing career in the clubs of Majorca and the neighboring Balearic Island of Ibiza.

The series will close on June 10th and 11th with a two-night run headlined by Robert Glasper. Glasper is the leader of a new paradigm in jazz, with a career that spans musical and artistic genres, winning 4 Grammys and 8 nominations across 7 categories, as well as an Emmy for his song on Ava Duvernay’s doc “13th" with Common and Karriem Riggins. Most recently he released the third installment of his acclaimed Black Radio series.

Tickets can be purchased at bluenotejazzfestival.com. Blue Note Miami Schedule: Friday, June 3 - George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic (8PM) Saturday, June 4 - Buika (8PM) Friday and Saturday, June 10-11 - Robert Glasper with Special Guests (8PM)
