Canada’s THE TREWS are serious road warriors. In addition to two gold records, and eleven top-10 singles, the Toronto-based rock band has logged close to 1,000 concerts.  They’re currently on their third tour of Australia this year and have two weeks in the UK in October, but U.S. shows have been selective around the release of Hope & Ruin, their fourth full-length studio album.

That all changes in November as the The Trews embark on a U.S. RESIDENCY TOUR where they will make repeated visits to select markets. The quartet will hit Nashville, Birmingham, Atlanta & Louisville, performing three times in each city over the course of three weeks and will also make select stops in Detroit, Lansing, Cleveland, Knoxville and Buffalo.

Earlier this summer, NY Press was blown away by a rare NYC appearance and American Songwriter hosted an acoustic session by the guys in their Nashville offices.  Benjamin Ricci of Performer Magazine applauds, "The Trews are, without a doubt, the greatest rock band of their generation," Twangville calls Hope & Ruin, “A collection of rock anthems filled with blaring electric guitars and tight harmonies” and Metal Odyssey exclaims, "The Trews just don’t bang-it-out on this album, they play the song and take you on an escalator of Rock."

ARTIST direct premiered the video for "The World I Know" and notes, "You will feel like you are on a people mover or a conveyor belt as this colorful, strange video begins... If this is the world I know, I'd hate to see the world I don't know!"

The Trews released Hope & Ruin earlier this year, Live From Montreal this summer, exclusively on iTunes, and in September, Hope & Ruin Deluxe, which includes a digital booklet and video of the title track.  The DELUXE version is only available digitally through Bumstead Records and is generously priced at $8.99.

Popmatters says, “There are some incredible moments” on Hope & Ruin and The Aquarian agrees it’s easy to, “get sucked into its vibe.” From the trippy atmospherics of “Dreaming Man” to the harmony-filled minstrelsy closer “You Gotta Let Me,” rhythmical patter ”One By One,” full-throttle rocker “People of the Deer,” soft rumination “Stay With Me” and buoyant first single, “Hope & Ruin,” the 12-song album has a feel that can only come from four guys that have played together for 14 years.

Bay Area singer/songwriter/author, David Berkeley has been more than industrious this year in support of his recent album Some Kind Of Cure, as well as his accompanying book, 140 Goats And A Guitar: The Stories Behind Some Kind of Cure.  YAHOO! MUSIC named Some Kind Of Cure one of the 'Albums That Should Be In Every Home' and HUFFINGTON POST featured David about his album and book along with a live performance video.

In addition to his usual club dates, David has also been performing and reading from his new book at museums, bookstores, cafes, private homes and even for marriage proposals.  Last night, Berkeley was a featured performer and speaker at the sold out TEDxSF Salon.  The focus of the program was education, and David sang songs and spoke of his experience at Harvard, teaching in a Brooklyn public school, and volunteering with CITY YEAR in San Jose.  The event was streamed live and each Salon video replay will be archived and found at TEDx.com and TED.com web channels.

David’s sold out Oct 15, 2011 performance from The Living Room in New York aired on "From The Living Room To The Loft" on SiriusXM on Nov 27th and will be rebroadcast on December 4 and December 6 at 7pm on SiriusXM Channel 30.  Berkeley will continue to tour in 2012, including the 30A Songwriters Festival, put on by the Cultural Arts Alliance.

Berkeley further deepens his foothold in the club circuit as “BELIEVE,” which Berkeley co-wrote with Sean Tyas is out now.  MixMag states that the “floor-friendly arrangement and David’s emotive lyrics (which we first fell in love with on Agulo’s ‘Fire Sign’) are a match made in heaven… producing a big-room, crossover movement.”  You can download the track at iTunes and Beatport.  A Steve Brian remix of “George Square” will be released in January on German label Euphonic.

Berkeley wrote and recorded a title track for New York Times bestselling author Harlan Coben’s new thriller Shelter and Coban is giving the track away at his book readings and with purchases of his novel.  David also recently penned an essay called “River Music,” published in The Blue Rock Review, Volume 7, WATER. He’ll once again don his literary hat for WHY THERE ARE WORDS, the bi-weekly Bay Area reading series.  More information can be found at http://whytherearewords.wordpress.com.

Paste, American Songwriter, Relix, SF Chronicle & Boston Globe have all covered Some Kind Of Cure and David performed at the 2011 Rocky Mountain Folk Festival with stops at Daytrotter, Acoustic Café, Art Of The Song (NPR), Acoustic Sunrise, WFUV (New York), WXPN (Philly), WERS (Boston), MPR (Maine) and a slew of morning shows.

He’s also performed on World Café, Mountain Stage, XM’s Loft Sessions, WFUV with John Platt and radio and television stations across the country.  David Berkeley was named one of WXPN's “Artists to Watch,” has received ASCAP’s Johnny Mercer Songwriter Award and, perhaps most notably, performed on PRI’s ‘This American Life’, telling the awkward and hilarious story of a private serenade he was hired to perform to help a guy win back an ex-girlfriend.

Brooklyn's backwords blends modern psychedelics with folk rock, 60s pop and a myriad of sonic surprises.  THE L MAGAZINE calls it, "Twangy Americana" and "70s psych rock" and THE DELI MAGAZINE concedes, “They sure are doing something nobody else we are aware of is doing in NYC right now: unpretentious, mellow psych folk that speaks to the heart.”

It is, and is not quite The Beach Boys meeting Daniel Johnston along with The Velvet Underground, bumping into Wilco, to all share a joint.  backwords release By The Neck on March 6, 2012 on Campers’ Rule Records.

backwords has two shows coming up in Brooklyn before heading down to SXSW 2012
Fri, Jan 13 - Brooklyn, NY - Cameo Gallery w/ Radical Dads
Wed, Feb 8 - Brooklyn, NY - Glasslands w/ Quilt

The follow up to 2010's Quilt, By The Neck combines a straight pop-melodic thread with a warm experimental vintage rock-and-roll vibe.  There’s multi-harmonies mixing with layered guitar riffs, (everybody sings) and lyrics that speak of sprained necks, stretched spines, and exhausted hearts.

By the Neck was recorded and produced in the band's homespun basement studio, Campers' Rule Records in Brooklyn, NY.  With an array of tiny toy instruments, antique mics, quirky percussive pieces, synthy ipod apps and lovely artwork all over the walls, backwords experimented, took their time, fleshed everything out and really let this album come to life in the comfortable space where they live, breathe, and work.  Brian Russ (guitar, vocals) spent countless hours mixing, editing, cutting, and experimenting with each track.  Then he'd walk a few steps and crash into his bed.  He has since started recording other Brooklyn bands at Campers' Rule.

From the ethereal “Anywhere Now” to kaleidoscopic album closer “Magic Bike Ride,” backwords delivers gentle, lazy melodies that stick to the tongue and cannot be forgotten.  And like a vigilant  hawk nesting atop a New York City skyscraper, there is a fury — a swooping darker underside that the band does not hesitate to explore.  Pre-order By The Neck NOW.

Booty shaking party music best sums up the inimitable Papa Grows Funk, one of the most successful funk bands to emanate from New Orleans. The group of all-star musicians teamed up with the legendary Allen Toussaint and fellow ‘who dat’ Tom Drummond of Better Than Ezra to co-produce their new album of  “Mardi Gras in a bottle” and PGF release Needle In The Groove on March 27 on Funky Krewe Records.Rooted in improvisation and led by Hammond B3 keyboardist and lead vocalist, John Gros, Papa Grows Funk has built its enthusiastic vibe on a long-standing musical tradition that dates back to the hot jazz of the legends, Fats Domino and Louis Armstrong.  Like Dr. John and the Neville Brothers, Papa Grows Funk keeps that New Orleans lineage alive while always funkifying towards the future.Papa Grows Funk has fused the individual talents of its members into one unique sound, but still retains the initial spark they ignited in the beginning while jamming together at the Old Point Bar. “While we throw in New Orleans classics, now our songs and our groove are all our own,” says John Gros. “We still love playing together and that comes through in our music.”Playing over 100 shows a year, Papa Grows Funk will do what they do best and hit the road this month in support of the upcoming release with more dates being added.  For the 12th consecutive year, Papa Grows Funk will perform at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on Saturday, April 28, 2012 on the Gentilly Stage.  Hitting venues across the world – from the Highline in New York to the Fuji Rock Festivan in Japan – Papa Grows Funk has brought their music to clubs from coast to coast and festivals worldwide. With no play lists and no rehearsals every Papa Grows Funk performance is its own masterpiece of funk. On any given night, the band might change songs or grooves. But one thing is certain: whether it is jam band college kids or seersucker wearing professionals, five folks or 100,000, after John Gros announces “We’re Papa Grows Funk from the great city of New Orleans,” the crowd is going to go wild.-PAPA GROWS FUNK TOUR DATESFri, Jan 20 – Lake Charles, LA – Luna LiveSat, Jan 21 – Baton Rouge, LA – Chelsea’s CaféSat, Mar 10 – Crystal Bay, NV – The Crystal Bay ClubSat, Mar 17 – New Orleans, LA – The Howlin’ WolfFri, Apr 13 – Austin, TX – Antone’sSat, Apr 14 – Houston, TX – Last Concert Café’s Spring FandangoSat, Apr 28 – New Orleans, LA - New Orleans Jazz & Heritage FestivalMay 20 – May 27 – New Orleans, LA – New Orleans Smooth Jazz Funk Cruise 2012

It’s been thirteen years since New York’s LUSCIOUS JACKSON released their last album Electric Honey and decided to pursue other endeavors (Jill writes with and produces other artists, Kate is an Emmy award winning television producer who’s worked on the Ellen DeGeneres and George Lopez shows, Jill and Gabby released solo albums in 2007, all are mothers).  Now they’re back at work on a new album and Rolling Stone has the premiere of their first single, “Are You Ready?”Singer/bassist Jill Cunniff elaborates on the music, “Our mission is still the same - to mix up our favorite music - hip hop, 70's punk and soul, dance pop and anything we feel like. The new song ‘Are You Ready?’ is stylistically classic LJ with some new twists. Lyrically it's about coming back together as a band, as well as a motivational song. It's about revolution, personal or political.”  The track is produced by Luscious Jackson and recorded by Cunniff.Like many artists nowadays, Luscious Jackson is forgoing the label world and going the direct-to-fan route, releasing their new album exclusively through PledgeMusic.  All ‘pledges’ will receive a copy of the upcoming album as well as exclusive content including updates and videos from the band.Fans will also have the chance to get involved in multiple premium offers - from Jill’s paintings, Kate’s painted drum heads, Gabby DJing your party, signed tour books and laminates, an NYC walking tour, music lessons, Skype and Google Plus chats, a private house show (better save up for that one) and many interactive experiences the band has never made available before. In addition, the Pledge campaign will also donate a portion of the pledges to the Child Welfare League of America, a powerful coalition of hundreds of private and public agencies serving vulnerable children and families, helping improve the lives of millions of children in all 50 states.  You can PLEDGE HERE.“We disbanded in 2000, knowing that having families and touring wouldn't mix,” continues Cunniff.  “We had a great final run of shows. We have been friends since high school and there was always room for reinvention. We have an opportunity to become an independent band right now and it's really exciting.”Luscious Jackson burst onto the music scene in 1992 after signing to Grand Royal, the Beastie Boys indie label and won Best EP in the Village Voice Pazz and Jop poll for In Search of Manny.  Two years later saw the release of Natural Ingredients on Grand Royal/Capitol Records to critical and commercial acclaim and the band joined label owners Beastie Boys on Lollapalooza and toured across the States gaining a larger following.Their second full-length album, Fever in Fever Out, was released in 1996, a year after opening for R.E.M. on their “Monster” Tour, culminating at Madison Square Garden.  Luscious Jackson worked with legendary producer Daniel Lanois on the album and together they created the band's most successful album to date.  The album went gold in the States, selling over 500,000 copies and featured the Top 40 single “Naked Eye.”  After the release of Fever in Fever Out, the band was seen everywhere from Gap commercials to Jeopardy.  They joined the line up on Lilith Fair in 1998 performing with the likes of Sarah McLachlan, Sheryl Crow, the Pretenders and Emmylou Harris.  The band released Electric Honey in 1999 (which contained the well known single “Ladyfingers”) before amicably disbanding in 2000.  The new opportunities of online media have inspired the band to make music again and connect to their fans directly.Listen to “Are You Ready?” now streaming at RollingStone.com

Wishes and Thieves is the perfect example of good chemistry.  The group combines a myriad of contrasting elements – rock, digital-inspired beats, R&B, soul, Radiohead-style detours—into something new and vibrant they call electronic induced pop.  The New York quartet releases their sophomore EP, Forest Fire on May 15, 2012.  Prior to that, the “Forest Fire” vinyl single drops on March 27th with a b-side cover of Ellie Goulding’s “Starry Eyed.”The “Forest Fire” digital single is currently for sale on iTunes. The video is live on the band’s web page, where the growing percussion is visually recreated as the group trashes a once-sedate living room by the track’s end.Forest Fire is a potent sonic mix of atmospheric vocals, heavy bass, hip-hop drums, and indie rock guitar that has quickly earned the group a fervent following and comparisons to the likes of Bjork, Brazilian Girls and Portishead. Within each song, the vibe often mutates, as “Let You In” starts in a slinky groove and morphs into a upbeat rock vibe.Wishes and Thieves self-produced and released their debut EP Lighthouse just months after forming in 2011, earning immediate accolades. The record landed on Last.fm’s “New Discoveries of 2011” year-end list (“It was a nice surprise, even though we were below Rebecca Black,” jokes guitarist Mike MacAllister) and winning approval from the likes of famed David Bowie producer Tony Visconti and hip-hop legend Mos Def.  Singer Jolanda Porter was even selected as one of Lucky magazine’s “Most Stylish Girls in Music,” alongside buzzworthy acts Zola Jesus, Rachael Yamagata, Neon Hitch and somebody named Lana Del Ray.  You can download the Lighthouse EP for free HERE.For their second EP, Forest Fire, the group composed the majority of the album in the rehearsal studio, taking musical sketches and working together to form finished tracks. The disparate sounds and fiery imagery in “Forest Fire” could serve as an important introduction to the group. “Like everything we do, that song started out one way and ended another,” says MacAllister. “I think it all goes back to the elements we bring in. We start with our own individual ideas, rework them to compliment each other and when it’s done, we’ve created something we all really like that, on our own, we would never have come up with.” Wishes and Thieves have a few hometown shows in New York and then head to Austin for South by Southwest.

On January 12th Jamie McLean Band invited its biggest fans, friends and supporters to the Gibson Guitars Showroom in New York City for a special night of music. The building was originally The Hit Factory where hundreds of famous albums including Born In the USA, Graceland and Songs In The Key Of Life were recorded.  On this hallowed ground Jamie McLean Band offered up cocktails, studio tours and two full sets of their original brand of red hot blues, roots, southern soul and uptown rock and roll.

A seven-camera film crew captured the sights while engineers captured the sounds and the result is Jamie McLean Band - Live at Gibson, out May 22, 2012 on CD & DVD via eOne Music.

Live at Gibson is a snapshot of a band in its prime.  Jamie McLean Band’s concerts have become known for their jaw dropping musicianship, rich three-part vocal harmonies and phenomenal songwriting.  This set captures the band in a historic room armed with a set list of instantly classic songs performed with raw energy and style.

Live At Gibson is Jamie McLean Bands’ first (and long awaited) live release and you can hear the sweat dripping, toes tapping and heads bobbing to the groove. The trio features Jamie McLean (guitar/vocals), Brian Griffin (drums/vocals) and Ben Mars (bass/vocals).  The set list includes songs from most of McLean’s deep catalog as well as newly penned unreleased originals and some choice cover songs by the Allman Brothers, Tom Petty and Otis Redding. American Idol winner Taylor Hicks joined the group on vocals and harmonica while Robert Randolph keys man Jason Crosby accompanied on piano, organ and fiddle.

The album kicks off with the help of Taylor Hicks singing the band’s ode to country roads, whisky sipping and finger licking fried chicken in “Country Living.”  McLean and Co. dig into much of their bluesier material including “Open Up,” “Crazy About You” and “I Been Low” which features drummer Brian Griffin’s use of a beer keg for classic percussion sounds.  “Summertime On Main Street” features a classic solo between McLean’s guitar and Jason Crosby’s stellar fiddle playing.  The album also features some rarities including the un-released “Sing It” and songs rarely played live, “Holy Water” as well as the band’s tribute to actress Natalie Portman “Natalie.”  Jamie McLean Band knows how to tackle a cover song and the Allman Brothers’ “Midnight Rider” is no exception.  It again features Taylor Hicks on vocals and an extended flurry of guitar fireworks from McLean.

Jamie McLean Band will tour behind their new album throughout the US and Canada this summer.  Don’t miss their amazing live set when they roll into a town near you!

Tedeschi Trucks Band released Everybody's Talkin' this week, their sophomore album in their second full year as a band.  The uplifting, energy-packed double-disc set by the 11-piece ensemble led by husband-wife team Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi that recently marked their first anniversary with a Grammy win for their debut album Revelator.

Kurt B. Reighley of MSN Music lauds, “From the opening moments of the Fred Neil title tune, ripe with warm brass and sweet vocal harmonies, the group's passion for performing together resonates loud and clear, and the extended song forms accommodate plenty of virtuoso instrumental turns -- even the flute solos rock!”

Billy Heller of the NY Post notes, “Over guitar, horns, organ and percussion from the 11-piece band, Tedeschi even makes the between-verse “wah, wah, wah, wah, wah” her own.”  This of course takes a different approach than Iggy Pop’s recent version of “Everybody's Talkin.”

Mike McGuirk of Rhapsody calls TTB, "about the best rock band working in the post-millennial era" and Enrique Lopetegui of the San Antonio Current confirms, “TTB is Sly Stone, Otis Redding, and James Brown all rolled into one.”

Spinner is currently hosting a Listening Party for the album and you can read more at the MSN Music feature.  Then head over to pick up a copy from any of these online outlets.

Tedeschi Trucks Band just posted a video for the title track on their website and you can also grab a free download of "Learn How To Love" when you sign up for the newetter..

Besides the Grammy for Best Blues Album of the Year in February, Trucks himself, along with TTB bandmate Oteil Burbridge, were honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for their membership in The Allman Brothers Band. In March, Tedeschi and Trucks were invited to perform at the White House with B.B, King, Buddy Guy, and yes, President Barack Obama himself (who sang a verse of “Sweet Home Chicago”). A week later, they appeared at the Apollo Theater, joining Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, and a host of guitar heavyweights in an all-star tribute to bluesman Hubert Sumlin.  On April 30th Tedeschi and Trucks will perform at the United Nations General Assembly in New York at a concert to celebrate International Jazz Day. Other featured performers include: Herbie Hancock, Esperanza Spalding, Wynton Marsalis and others.

The Tedeschi Trucks band is on the road all summer hitting festivals and theaters as well as a special run of performances with the legendary B.B. King.  More info and a full list of tour dates can be found here.

Jamie McLean Band’s concerts have become known for their jaw dropping musicianship, rich three-part vocal harmonies and phenomenal songwriting and the trio released their first and long awaited live album, Live at Gibson this week.

American Songwriter premiered a free download of of the track "Natalie" last week. “‘Natalie' is our drummer Brian's tribute to actress Natalie Portman,” says Jamie McLean. “There was a billboard of her plastered around New York City one winter that sparked the idea of a love song combining Natalie’s ‘girl next door’ image with a classic Hollywood Werewolf character. It’s a twisted, rock and roll romance song.”  Grab the tune HERE

Originally the guitarist for New Orleans’ famed Dirty Dozen Brass Band and playing sets at Madison Square Garden, Bonnaroo, Japan’s Fuji Rock and working with the likes of Elvis Costello, Dave Matthews and Norah Jones, Jamie McLean now heads up the Jamie McLean Band and plays an original brand of red hot blues, roots, southern soul and uptown rock and roll.

Live At Gibson was recorded at the famed Gibson Showroom in New York City and captures the band in its element.  Live and in front of a captivated crowd is where Jamie McLean Band truly shines and this night was no different.  The band dug deep into their catalog to produce a set list and album that features their original brand of blues, rock and soul.  Special guests like American Idol winner Taylor Hicks and Robert Randolph keys man Jason Crosby add some great flavor to the set.  Bluesy staples like “Crazy About You” and “Country Living” get turned up even more in front of a crowd and JMB does more than justice to covers like Allman Brothers’ “Midnight Rider” and Otis Redding’s “Mr. Pitiful.”

Jamie McLean Band are on the behind Live at Gibson. Don’t miss their amazing live set when they roll into a town near you!

Legendary funk-rock singer Nona Hendryx is back and bolder than ever on her new album – Mutatis Mutandis – set to be released by Righteous Babe Records on July 31, 2012, out digitally on July 10.  The 10-track album is Nona’s first full length in twenty years and she’s returning in a big way.

Mutatis Mutandis is an album that has both politically and socially relevant lyrics wrapped in funky grooves, soulful vocals and rock charged rhythms. Quite simply put, Nona Hendryx is the quintessential “mother” of contemporary artists such as Erykah Badu, Emeli Sandé, Janelle Monáe, M.I.A., V.V. Brown, and others who can only hope to see careers that allow them to span the decades, and she still rocks on!

On Mutatis Mutandis (Latin for “Changing those things which need to be changed”), Hendryx attacks the Tea Party, Rush Limbaugh (“Ballad of Rush Limbaugh”), Gulf oil spills (“Oil On The Water”), and lends the necessary gravitas to a striking rendition of Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit” with smoky vocals somewhere between funk and the end of the stratosphere.  Blistering guitars, killer horns, and gospel flourishes and unstoppable beats fill the album, but don’t take away from the message at hand – Nona Hendryx is here to tackle social issues, point out corporate greed, black on black violence and attacks by political and religious conservatives.  The result is an album steeped in vintage R&B and soul, but totally in tune with the here and now.

“I chose the title and was moved to write and record the CD by the major events and changes on the world’s stage in the last 12 years, initiated by the ‘black swan’ event, 9/11,” expands Hendryx.

Nona will kick off ‘A Woman’s Bill Of Rights Tour’ of the east coast in support of Mutatis Mutandis, beginning in Boston on July 12. She’ll then move on to hit New York, Philly, DC and New Haven before wrapping up in Long Island on July 21. More dates will be added into the summer and early fall.

Hendryx is running a campaign with PledgeMusic to support the tour where participants can pre-order the album and will get access to exclusive tour updates, videos from tour rehearsalsr, a chance for musical rarities as well as some interactive experiences and surprises that we can’t tell you about yet!  Pledges won’t just help support the tour, but will also help an amazing organization called Little Black Pearl, a school in Chicago for alternative learning for youths ages 12 to 17.  Find out more info and ‘Pledge’ at http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/nonahendryx.

Longtime Nona Hendryx fans know her as one of the founding members of the doo-wop girl group, Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles.  Known as the “sweethearts of the Apollo Theatre” the group was inducted in the R&B Hall of Fame in 1999.  After signing to Atlantic Records, the group lost a member, but the remaining members reinvented themselves into the iconic funk-rock group, Labelle.  The group saw huge success throughout the 70s, racking up three gold albums and a #1 worldwide platinum hit with the single “Lady Marmalade”.  In 1977, lead singer Patti LaBelle left the group to start her solo career.

While Labelle fans grieved the split, Nona Hendryx fans celebrated at the launch of her solo career.  Nona’s solo efforts included eight studio albums, collaborations with the likes of Prince, Peter Gabriel, Talking Heads, Bono, Keith Richards and more, resulting in several top 10 hits and a Grammy nomination.  Hendryx also began writing music for theatre and film and began producing and continued to collaborate with a new generation of artists including India Arie, Esperanza Spalding, Cassandra Wilson and Sheila E.  In 2011, Nona added to her long career an adjunct position teaching Stage Craft, a course she created for The Clive Davis Department at Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and was appointed Ambassador for Artistry in Education at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Booty shaking New Orleans-based funk band, Papa Grows Funk’s Needle in the Groove, released locally in New Orleans in October 2011 and nationally in January 2012 by Funky Krewe Records, has made it to the final round of voting by the Recording Academy from which the nominees for “Best Regional Roots Album of the Year” category for the 55th Annual Grammy Awards will be chosen.  Co-produced by New Orleans’ musical legends, Allen Toussaint and Tom Drummond, Needle in the Groove is built on the enthusiastic vibe of a long-standing musical tradition that dates back to the hot jazz of legends, Fats Domino and Louis Armstrong, but also captures the party-in-a-bottle groove of their live shows.“We would like to thank the Recording Academy members for their consideration,” says John Gros, the Hammond B3 keyboardist and lead vocalist of Papa Grows Funk. “We love and admire the other bands in this category -- Keith Frank, Rebirth Brass Band, Creole String Beans, and the Lost Bayou Ramblers – and this honor blows us away.”“It was such a pleasure working with musicians with this sort of skill level who are at the top of their game,” says Drummond. “With Allen and I each producing half of the songs, it is a unique project and it is wonderful that Needle in the Groove is up for Grammy consideration. Papa Grows Funk is well-deserving of this kind of recognition.Recording Academy voters have until Wednesday, October 31, 2012 to complete their ballots. Nominations for all categories will be announced on December 5, 2012. The 55th Annual Grammy Awards will take place in Los Angeles on February 10, 2013.

Revered Canadian rockers The Trews are pleased to release their new EP, …thank you and I'm sorry (Bumstead Records) this week.  Available physically in Canada and Australia, the EP is a digital only release in the U.S.  The 7-song EP is the follow up to the quartet's fourth full-length studio album, Hope & Ruin, featuring The Black Crowes guitarist Rich Robinson and including the song “Leaps and Bounds,” written by Australian Rock icon Paul Kelly. The Trews has built its reputation belting their high-energy, arena-ready rock anthems from stages across the globe.  This time out, listeners get to hear seven new songs co-producded by Gordie Johnson and Trews guitarist John Angus MacDonald.“We love having something new for our fans, something we’re excited to share,” says The Trews vocalist, Colin MacDonald. The EP is featured over at RDIO in the NEW MUSIC TUESDAY PLAYLIST and you can listen to …thank you and I'm sorry in full at Spotify here.  You can purchase …thank you and I'm sorry via iTunes here."I love the EP.  Just a few songs, it's a great idea to keep the flow going in a recording career.  That's how The Trews are using this 7-song release, with an eye to a whole new album coming in 2013," praises Bob Mersereau of CBC Canada. "The best is these aren't throw-aways, but a rather strong collection, and interestingly, a bit of a different sound for the band as well."Come the new year, The Trews will return to writing material for their next full-length.  Expect a new album in mid 2013 from the band that Performer Magazine calls  “……..without a doubt, the greatest rock band of their generation.”  Alternative Addiction affirms, "The band is too good for fans of great music not to enjoy."

Critically acclaimed eclectic roots outfit Scrapomatic released I'm A Stranger (And I Love The Night) via Landslide Records this summer, and their first video for the project--a blend of stop motion cut out animation over a live background for the song "Rat Trap"-- premieres today at Huffington Post

Mike Mattison, who also sings and writes songs for the Grammy Award winning Tedeschi Trucks Band, leads Scrapomatic. Due to the continuous road schedule on the road with TTB, the band wanted to do an animated video.

’Rat Trap’ seemed to be the obvious choice,” says Mattison.  “It has a creepy narrative about relationships going wrong in off-brand casinos.  Who wouldn't want to see a cartoon about that?”  View the video at HuffPo here.

Mattison is joined in Scrapomatic by Paul Olsen, an in-demand New York musical director credited with two ASCAP songwriting awards.  This album also adds a new permanent band member, Alabama-bred, multi faceted guitarist, Dave Yoke, while again featuring the crack Atlanta rhythm unit of Ted Pecchio (bass) and Tyler Greenwell (drums).

Scrapomatic meshes distinctly different approaches into a compelling amalgam of roots, r&b and homegrown soul-folk. I'm A Stranger (And I Love The Night) continues the band’s distinctive forays through an intoxicating variety of American musical styles.

All Music calls I'm A Stranger And I Love The Night, “Another terrific addition to a small but quality catalog of offbeat roots music that never panders to its audience or takes it for granted.” No Depression approves, "The family of musicians has certainly struck upon a formula for award winning music."

Scrapomatic will be in New York City this weekend when they peform at Joe's Pub on Sunday, December 9. Tickets to the show can be purchased here.

Mike Mattison won a Grammy as lead singer with The Derek Trucks Band for 2009's Best Blues Album, Already Free.  In 2010, The Derek Trucks Band announced a hiatus, and Mattison joined the new group, Tedeschi Trucks Band, as a backing vocalist and songwriter.  He won another Grammy with TTB for 2011's Best Blues Album, Revelator. His compositions, “Bound for Glory” and "Midnight in Harlem," received significant airplay and the latter was featured in the band’s performance for the DVD of Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival 2010.

Like the Radio Dial of yore that serves as its fitting name, Jason Blum’s new album tunes into a wide range of stylistic, emotional and locational signals. It takes the listener on a journey akin to the wide travels that brought him to making such a rich and diverse, yet definitive collection of songs. As Blum sings on the seductively swaying title track, “There’s a song that will carry you across the ocean tuning in on your radio dial.”  Jason Blum will release Radio Dial on March 26, 2013 on Bitchin Records.

The title track was produced and engineered by Tom Schick (Paul McCartney, Rufus Wainwright, Ryan Adams, Sean Lennon), but the entire album was produced by Blum himself and mixed by James Stevens at EAR Studios in Austin.  Radio Dial blends together Blum’s recording journey through studios and scenes in Austin, New York and Maryland as well as his years perfecting his vision in his home studio.

While recording, Blum’s talents as a professional chef took him all around the state of Texas. As Jason observes, “I’d cook a meal for people and then get out my guitar and play them some songs.” Doing so kept winning him new friends and supporters. He even hosted a BBQ for Ian MacLagan and 100 friends for his 66th birthday party, right after his induction into the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame.

Radio Dial features a wealth of notable players: Lee Alexander, Andrew Borger and Greg "Wiz" Weickzorek from Norah Jones’s band, Rufus Wainwright bassist Jeff Hill, and such world class drummers as Shawn Pelton of the Saturday Night Live band and J.J. Johnson (formerly with John Mayer and now with Tedeschi Trucks Band).

Radio Dial opens with “Josephine,” which reaches back to Blum’s early folk roots, enhanced with modernist touches, and wraps up with the jazzy romanticism of “Blooming in the Sun,” a duet with his friend, rising jazz singing and songwriting star Kat Edmonson. The track also features Danny Gatton associates John Previti on bass, drummer Brooks Tegler and guitarist Jim Stephanson.

In between, he touches on a stunning breadth of moods and modes. His time in Texas near the borderlands brings a Tex-Mex flavor to the slow devotional dance of “Las Estrellas” and rollicking fiesta of “Barcelona,” while the heat of the desert wafts through “New Mexico Sunset” (which features New York singer Betty Black on harmonies) and the haunting tale of “Dude Barrachon.”

His youthful punk/new wave influences bring a kick to “I Know Evil,” in both the vibrato heavy music and the Cajun inspired video, featuring only Blum and a lone dancer shaking her way through an Austin cemetery. All 10 tracks on the album share that rare quality of transporting listeners to vivid musical and lyrical locales.

Jason Blum will be on the road in Texas next month, making his way up to NYC for a special CD RELEASE PERFORMANCE at Rockwood Music Hall – Stage 2 on Wednesday, March 27th at 7pm.  Expect additional tour dates to be announced soon.

On April 16, 2013, Halle & The Jilt will release Three Roads Home, the follow up to their critically-acclaimed debut, Lucky You.  The 10-track album highlights lead singer, Halle Petro's versatility as a songwriter, genre-skipping from blues/soul to pop/rock.  Three Roads Home is an exploration in love and relationships. "I don't believe life is about waiting for something to happen to you," says Petro.  She goes on, "The title of Three Roads Home is a reflection of this. Home can be defined as a place, another person or yourself.  The choices in our lives represent the roads we take. The record is about chance and taking risks. Simple...door #3 kinda thing."Petro wrote all of the music/lyrics, arranged and produced Three Roads Home, and will self-release the album. "Most lyrics are direct references from personal diary entries that have been adapted to fit the form of songs," says Petro, "Unfortunately, I wear my heart on my sleeve!" On Three Roads Home, she takes the listener on a journey through the stages of grieving a broken relationship - from shock ("Graveyard of the Ocean"), to anger ("Kiss My Ghost"), to forgiveness ("Confessions") and finally, to acceptance ("Signs").Halle developed her love for music growing up in Cleveland, OH. Both her father and grandfather were aspiring musicians and encouraged her to take piano and voice lessons. The family would dance in the kitchen to the Motown songs her father loved. "James Brown was my first concert at 5. We sat in the last row of the Front Row Theater, stood on the seats and danced." She made the move to NYC after college, but it wasn't until she joined a band in NY and began covering rock songs at gigs throughout the city that she realized she had something of her own to say. It was then she decided to start her own band, and Halle & The Jilt was born in 2009. While Halle noted it was "terrifying" to sing her own lyrics, she also felt it was empowering. "I took a day job so I could produce Lucky You, then quit so I could tour and promote it," she laughs. The overwhelming response she received from fans helped, and the demand for a second album led her to Kickstarter. After a successful campaign to raise funds for the album, just a few months later, Three Roads Home was completed."To me singing is like being in a dark room spilling all your secrets," Petro says. The album morphs her from coquettishly vulnerable to devilishly roaring, and was recorded mostly live in the studio. "I wanted this record to sound as if we are in that room with the listener."Halle & The Jilt's Three Roads Home tour will kick off in the spring.  Tour dates to be announced shortly.Halle & The Jilt are:Halle Petro - Vocals, Music, LyricsMichael Gomez - Guitar, MusicTim Luntzel - BassJon Wert - Drumswith various musical guests

Musical behemoth ARTISTdirect premiered a free download of the track on their site along with a first round of March tour dates - including a hometown CD RELEASE SHOW at Subterranean in Chicago on Saturday, March 23rd.Produced by Dan McMahon and Darren Garvey (Cory Chisel) and engineered by James Auwarter (Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, Rihanna, John Legend), who also recruited some gospel singers from the Chicago’s South Side, Great Divide is an ambitious affair, moving effortlessly from soul to pop to funk, all tied together by songwriter/vocalist Teddy Grossman’s lyrical openness and his way with a hook. The band self-produced their debut, Reservoir, in 2010 with Performer Magazine describing the album as, “A strong set of tunes steeped in American roots music, but nonetheless entirely modern in presentation…. the band filters this cocktail of blues, soul, and traditional rock - with nods to country, funk, and even reggae - through a contemporary rock and pop lens that makes the music entirely their own.”Stay tuned for additional tour dates to be announced later this month.Great Divide Tour Dates:March 1 – Berwyn, IL – Fitzgerald's March 12 – St. Louis, MO – The GramophoneMarch 14 – 17: SXSWMarch 23 – Chicago, IL – Subterranean (Hometown CD Release Show)

As a co-writer and contributor on TTB's studio albums, Krasno is no stranger to the band and will perform through August 15, except for July 19-24, when TTB will be joined by Tim Lefebvre.  The band will be on tour for the rest of the year, including a newly announced headlining show at the famed Royal Albert Hall on October 29th with the legendary Mavis Staples.  A full list of tour dates can be found below.

Co-produced by Jim Scott (Johnny Cash, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Wilco) and Trucks —Made Up Mind was recorded in the band’s home base of Jacksonville at Derek and Susan’s Swamp Raga Studios. Working closely with Scott, who engineered and mixed the album alongside TTB family member Bobby Tis—Trucks’ ever-expanding expertise as a studio production whiz is displayed continually and definitively in the choices he made throughout the sessions. For Trucks, the studio has become another instrument to master, and Made Up Mind leaves no doubt that his skills as a producer now rank right alongside his expertise as a player and songwriter.

Head over to the TTB VEVO channel to check out the Made Up Mind Studio Series, where Derek and Susan break down each track on the upcoming album and welcome you into the recording process. A new video for each track will be posted every week leading to the August 20 release date.

Most of the tracks on Made Up Mind were penned by Tedeschi and Trucks with various co-writers—including Doyle Bramhall II, Eric Krasno, Gary Louris, Oliver Wood, Sonya Kitchell and John Leventhal, all of whom also contributed to TTB's debut Revelator.  The maiden single from the album, “Part of Me,” a vocal duet between Susan and trombonist Sermons, stands out as a particular highlight, reminiscent of the classic R&B emanating from the Memphis and Muscle Shoals soul scenes of the ’60s and ’70s.

The 11-piece juggernaut known as the Tedeschi Trucks Band are in the midst of their co-headlining tour with The Black Crowes and nearing the release of their second full-length studio album, Made Up Mind via Sony Masterworks on August 20th.  Dynamic vocalist and guitarist Susan Tedeschi and her guitar virtuoso husband Derek Trucks have been joining the Crowes onstage at many shows and we want to share with you the electrifying result.

The Boston Globe caught the first of a two night stand with TTB and The Crowes saying, "TTB is playing and writing at its highest level to date" and No Depression has an early review of the album noting, “Each track is filled with interweaving melodic textures and rhythmic counterpoints that have been artfully arranged, creating a massive wall of sound that is a blend of blues, roots and soul.”

Elle has the exclusive stream of the soulful cut "Idle Wind" and you can grab a free download of maiden single, “Part of Me” here and at the band's website.

The Revivalists are incessantly on tour and their magnanimous live performances have been perpetually flooring audiences in every city they visit with their mix of soulful indie rock, r&b and funk. The Big Easy septet start a fall tour tonight at The Blind Tiger in Greensboro, NC and to kick off the run, the good folks over at Jambase have the premiere of a pro-shot live video of "All in the Family."  Filmed in Pensicola, FL at The Vinyl Music Hall earlier this year, the "bombastic" clip is the first from The Revivalists since the release of their Ben Ellman (Galactic, Trombone Shorty) produced album, City of Sound."This sizzling piece of game-tape serves as a testament to the incredible crowd of the Florida Gulf Coast and provides a sneak peek at some of our yet-to-be-recorded material," notes singer David Shaw. "‘All in the Family’ is a song that deals with a person's psyche and how we relate/interact with ourselves and society as a whole. The universe has its own laws that we can either choose to ignore or embrace. The family helps us realize this and move forward as one. This song has become a fan favorite and always crushes live, because of the energy brought forth by our family, the fans.”It’s been a landmark summer for The Revivalists, with monster festival sets at Bonnaroo, Governor’s Ball, Hangout, Mountain Jam, High Sierra, Ride Fest, Gathering of the Vibes and more. Back when we had a fully functioning Government last week, Rolling Stone premiered an acoustic video of the Tedeschi Trucks Band performing "The Storm" on their tour bus. "'The Storm' is a song where you're sitting on the floor, and you have a great guitar sound, and you're thinking, 'You know what, let's just be unafraid to crank this shit up,'" says Derek Trucks of the song. "It's inspired by Jack Owens and Skip James, that Betonia County, Mississippi blues sound. But it's also that Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, just air-it-out thing."That Friday evening, TTB closed out their three-night-guest-laden run at NYC's famed Beacon Theatre. Over the course of the residency, the band hosted Tash Neal & Chris St. Hilaire of the London Souls, Eric Krasno and Neal Evans of Soulive and Doyle Bramhall II. Legendary guitarist Dickey Betts astonished the crowd with his appearance at the sold-out Saturday night show and even brought along his son Duane Betts to jam as well. But one of the most memorable sit-ins came when Lee Fields joined the band (along with Krasno and Evans) for "More and More."  Check out the video here and feel free to post.Led by dynamic vocalist and guitarist Susan Tedeschi and her guitar virtuoso husband Derek Trucks, Tedeschi Trucks Band released their second full-length studio album, Made Up Mind this summer via Sony Masterworks. The 11-piece juggernaut is perpetually on the road and just added Canadian and European dates to bookend a west coast run of their ever expanding schedule.Made Up Mind is nothing less than a quantum leap forward for TTB. Wind-up Records is proud to announce the signing of New Orleans band The Revivalists.  The guys have spent the last few years touring all over the country, playing countless sold out shows from California to New York and places in between. They have become a must see band on the festival circuit, performing in featured slots at Bonnaroo, Jazz Fest, Voodoo Festival, Governors Ball, The Hangout Festival, Mountain Jam and many more.  David Fricke of Rolling Stone calls them “…a Crescent City-rhythm spin on jam-band jubilee…” and Relix adds, “…the group’s powerful and accessible sound…with funky grooves and danceable beats...The singer wails with an Eddie Vedder-intensity...”The Revivalists will showcase their musical prowess when featured in the upcoming fourth and final season of HBO’s acclaimed drama series Treme in an episode called “Sunset on Louisianne” airing December 22nd. In the episode the band performs “Concrete (Fish Out Of Water)” off their 2008 self-titled EP at the Always Lounge in NOLA where Davis McAlary (played by Steve Zahn), a part-time DJ, aspiring songwriter and music scenester goes to see them perform. The Revivalists will release their Wind-up Records debut album in 2014.  Until then, they will be touring throughout the United States in support of their album City of Sound. The tour includes a stop in Brooklyn to perform to their third straight sold out crowd at Brooklyn Bowl on November 22nd. Their first stop at the Bowl featured a guest appearance by guitarist Warren Haynes going outside the box with a cover of “Forgot About Dre” - watch it here. New and upcoming tour dates are listed below with more dates to be added soon. The Revivalists have been playing nonstop since 2007, crafting a genre-hopping sound that rounds out traditional rock instrumentation with horns and pedal steel guitar and mixes the divergent backgrounds of its individual members with the humid, funky undercurrents of the band’s New Orleans home. The result is like English spoken with an exotic accent: familiar, yet difficult to pin down. Religion aside, a revival is all about the tangible electricity that can only be created when enough like minds are crammed under a single roof for a singular purpose. It’s a spiritual spectacle, a carnival of the divine, a whole greater than the sum of its parts. The Revivalists are David Shaw (Vocals), Ed Williams (Pedal Steel Guitar),  Zack Feinberg (Guitar),  Rob Ingraham (Saxophone), George Gekas (Bass), Andrew Campanelli (Drums) and Michael Girardot (Keys/Trumpet).The Revivalists Tour Dates:11/13 - Live Oak, FL - Bear Creek Music & Arts Festival (Benefit Show)11/15 - Live Oak, FL - Bear Creek Music & Arts Festival11/16 - Charleston, SC - The Pour House11/18 - Raleigh, NC - Southland Ballroom11/20 - Richmond, VA - The Capital Ale House11/21 - Washington DC - The Hamilton11/22 - New York, NY - Brooklyn Bowl11/23 - Philadelphia, PA - The Blockley11/24 - Port Chester, NY - Garcias @ The Capital Theater12/05 - St. Petersburg, FL - Local 66212/06 - Orlando, FL - The Social12/07 - Miami, FL - Willcall (Art Basel Afterparty)12/08 - Key West, FL - Ocean Key Resort Sunset Pier12/09 - Key West, FL - Ocean Key Resort Sunset Pier12/27 - Pensacola, FL - Vinyl Music Hall12/28 - Pensacola, FL - Vinyl Music Halll12/31 - New Orleans, LA - The Civic Theatre1/04 - Miami, FL - Jam Cruise1/10 - Boca Raton, FL - Funky Biscuit1/31 - Austin, TX - The Parish2/01 - Dallas, TX - The Prophet Bar       2/04 - Fort Collins, CO - Hodi's Half Note                          2/05 - Breckenridge, CO - Three20South2/06 - Aspen, CO - Belly Up Aspen2/07 - Avon, CO - Agave2/08 - Denver, CO - Bluebird Theatre2/10 - Lawrence, KS - The Bottleneck2/11 - St. Louis, MO - Old Rock House2/12 - Nashville, TN - Mercy Lounge2/13 - Athens, GA - Georgia Theatre2/14 - Live Oak, FL - Aura Music Festival2/15 - Mobile, AL - Soul Kitchen
