DJ Williams, the electric guitarist, songwriter, and producer known for his explosive live performances and groundbreaking musical style, announces his eagerly awaited 26-night summer tour. This announcement comes on the heels of a successful 21-date spring tour, as Williams takes the stage in celebration of his latest album, By Way of RVA, an evocative tribute to Richmond, VA, where he refined his eclectic musical prowess.

Celebrated for his dynamic stage presence, Williams is set to deliver an unmatched live music experience with the DJ Williams Band as they journey across the United States. Premier Guitar hails him as “… a monster… an inventive, effective, and ear-catching soloist, armed with a warm tone and superior chops.” The tour kicks off on May 3rd in New Orleans at Le Bon Temps Roule, aligning with the New Orleans Jazz Fest After Dark, and concludes on July 13th in Williams’ native Colorado, at Goose Station in Golden.

The band’s lineup for the summer includes the exceptional talents of drummer Ben Atkind, formerly of the popular jam band Goose; Steph Orsini handling the bass; and Macon Mann on keyboards. “Ben’s addition has been fantastic; he brings a tremendous energy that enhances our live sound,” remarks Williams. The set list spans across Williams’ recent projects, reflecting his musical journeys, experiences, and the magic that comes from a life dedicated to music on the road.

Williams shares insights into the upcoming shows, “Expect a vibrant mix of tracks from my last four records. The tours have really tightened our performance and focus. Particularly, “‘Fade Away,’ the lead track from By Way of RVA, really lifts up the audience. This EP moves towards a grittier sound that I’m really loving.”

Released on his own label, Projekt Records, in spring, the six-track EP is a tour-de-force of Williams’ musical ingenuity, fusing funk, rock, and soul into a mesmerizing sonic experience.

Discussing the new album, Williams reveals, “I knew I wanted to lay down some ideas immediately after finishing ‘Soldier Of Love,’” the last record he dropped in June of 2023 (the album title track features DJ Harrison, Adam Deitch, and Kanika Moore). “The creative process really kicked in once I forced myself to start the RVA project. Suddenly, everything began to flow effortlessly.” Williams impressively plays all the instruments on By Way of RVA, including the drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, and synths. “This album reflects my deep connection to Richmond. It shaped my sound and influenced my broad palette of musical styles.”

Creating By Way Of RVA was a personal and intensive endeavor for Williams, who recorded and mixed the album in his home studio. “I set up my drums in a walk-in closet and cut some vocals in the shower for that natural reverb. It was a thrilling challenge to handle everything myself,” Williams explains. The album was mastered by Doug Krebs, ensuring top-notch sound quality.

Williams also delved into the complexities of mixing the album, sharing his approach to enriching the sound. “I layered about 22 vocal tracks on our cover of Nirvana’s ‘Heart-Shaped Box’. It’s inspired by those lush Brian Wilson productions. I experimented a lot, especially with the orchestral synth arrangements on the title track,” he notes.

Lyrically, the album explores themes of introspection and personal evolution. “Lyrical content is a new frontier for me, and I’m embracing the challenge to express more vulnerability.” His catchy song “Mr. Nobody” addresses the paradox of an introvert thriving in the extroverted world of music. “That song is the mask that I wear to do the song and dance of being in the spotlight. Originally, it started as a joke but now it’s my favorite song on the album,” says Williams. “And ‘Fade Away’ starts with ‘Welcome to my life!’ because these songs are very personal to me. They’re small windows into my life because I’m not ready for big ones yet.”

Born in Plainfield, NJ, and raised in Richmond, VA, Williams was captivated by music from the very start, hitting his first piano note at the ripe age of four.

“We had a dedicated room in my house growing up specifically for music, reading, and art.” His musical palette was shaped by an eclectic mix of vinyl records ranging from Curtis Mayfield and Stevie Wonder to The Beatles, James Brown, and Chaka Khan, which he listened to alongside his sister. “My older sister turned me on to Fishbone, Led Zeppelin, George Clinton, Bad Brains, stuff like that…then my adolescence brought me Nirvana, Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets, Radiohead, TOOL, and Dr. Dre.” As he matured, his tastes expanded into the realms of jazz, appreciating legends like Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk, always drawn to music that stirred deep emotions within him.

Fast forward to the present, Williams has carved a name for himself in the touring circuit as the lead guitarist for Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe and touring with his eclectic Richmond, VA, funk outfit, DJ Williams Projekt. His fleet-fingered playing has captured the hearts of music lovers across the globe, gracing both intimate small rock venues to large, prestigious music festivals spanning the US, Canada, and Europe.

Having shared stages with music legends such as John Legend, Dave Matthews Band, George Clinton, John Oates, Warren Haynes, Ivan Neville, Big Daddy Kane, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Soulive, Levon Helm, Slightly Stoopid, Robert Randolph, Slick Rick, George Clinton, and playing guitar for world renowned comedian Hannibal Burress on Hannibal’s comedy tour, Williams continues to leave an indelible mark on the music scene.

After the successful debut of Hors D'oeuvres Part 1, Sqwerv is now announcing the eagerly awaited follow-up, the second EP in the series, set for release on May 15th. This new installment promises to continue captivating listeners with its compelling sonic narrative.

Aptly-titled Hors d’Oeuvres Part 2, the national touring band’s three-song EP embraces the ethos of psychedelic exploration while injecting a heavier, drippy guitar-driven rock sound and some electric blues into the mix. Building on the foundation laid by its predecessor, this release delves deeper into the realms of garage rock and neo-psychedelia, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in a world of sonic experimentation.

The EP kicks off with “Majk,” a trance-y tune characterized by an epic guitar melody that draws you into its melancholic depths. Seamlessly transitioning into “Croc Stomp,” the titillating track is a spirited homage to garage rock with a swampy feel. Rounding off the project is “Lately,” the first track in the Hors D’Oeuvres project to feature vocals. This soothing, consonant finale is adorned with sweet and lush piano melodies, providing a perfect conclusion to the psychedelic voyage.

Hors d’Oeuvres Part 2 is a culmination of an ambitious experiment in encapsulating the essence of raw, organic sound. The EP showcases Sqwerv’s versatility and willingness to explore new musical territories.  “This album was an experiment to capture good quality home recordings from little musical ideas we’ve had over the years. What we captured was a true raw and psychedelic sound that includes minimal overdubs and vocals,” Sqwerv explains. “While ‘Part 1’ had a more chill, tropical beach feel to it, ‘Part 2’ leans a little heavier with a psych-rock, drippy vibe.”

Prior to recording, Sqwerv curated a list of memorable riffs, unsure of how each would unfold. However, upon completion, the band found themselves enamored with every track, ultimately deciding to include the songs in the EP.

Recorded over the course of a month in the band’s home, every song was born from spontaneous musical ideas, resulting in a collection that embraces imperfection. “Parts 1-3 were essentially written and recorded on the spot. We played every song live together with all of our instruments mic’d up. We experimented with different room recordings,” says Sqwerv.

With this offering, Sqwerv sought to create an immersive experience, inviting listeners to feel as though they were standing alongside the band. “We placed one mic at head level in the middle of the room because we wanted people to feel like they were standing in the room with us. We made every effort possible to ensure the organic feel of our living room was captured.”

Reflecting on the recording process, Sqwerv describes Hors d’Oeuvres Part 2 as a departure from the norm of lyrical songs, instead embracing the sonic dreamscape where imperfections intertwine with creativity. While “Lately” introduces vocals to the project, the band says it serves as an additional layer to the dreamy-esque song, allowing listeners to craft their own interpretation of the sonic landscape.

Denver-based Sqwerv's roots run deep in the Denver music scene. Those roots began to take hold through open jams and a little bit of luck when the band started playing gigs at bars and small venues seven years ago. Since then, the group has become a staple in Denver’s music scene with bands like Magic Beans, Squeaky Feet, Eminence Ensemble and Rado. Dedicated to quality songwriting, the quartet experiments with everything from twelve-minute prog epics inspired by Homer's Odyssey to succinct two-minute love songs. Last month, Sqwerv made an appearance on KDVR Fox31 TV’s “Great Day Colorado,” where they performed “Honolulu Blue,” a riveting track off Hors d’Oeuvres Part 1.

Known for their passion for crafting immersive grooves, polyrhythms, and daring improvisations, the group has captivated jam-music enthusiasts. Denver Westword recently praised Sqwerv, saying, “They let the music do the talking live, and (it) is indicative of the band’s growth since it got together in 2017.” To date, Sqwerv has opened up for Spafford, Big Something, Lespecial, Eggy and many more.

You can catch Sqwerv at a live show this summer while they tour around the country (https://sqwerv.com/shows). Later this year, fans can expect a full-length studio album sometime in the fall.

Denver psych-groove rock band RADO is thrilled to announce the release of its debut album, “Baker's Measurements,” which dropped on August 9, 2024. The offering is a celebration of the genre-blending, improvisational band’s musical evolution, capturing the essence of their live performances and the raw spontaneity that has won the quartet fans across the country. To celebrate, RADO hosted an album release party at Cervantes' Other Side on that same day.

Currently on a summer tour, RADO has been playing to packed audiences, including a recent three-night run in Nebraska and a standout show at Terp Float Fest in Tahlequah, OK. Sprinkled in the band’s set list are performances of previously released songs off the forthcoming album. The singles: “River” (August 2023), “The Twist” (November 2023), and “Thank You Mr. Science” (March 2024) are featured on “Baker's Measurements,” along with four unreleased cuts.

One of those songs, “Back Nine,” was highlighted on the band’s social media along with the release of the album. Clocking in at 11 minutes, the catchy reggae-flecked jam epitomizes the band’s strong vocals and rhythmic backbone. Flanked with punchy-to-steady beats, the added percussive beats are handled by RADO’s good friend and guest musician Adam Langdon. “Adam provided the cherry on top of an already great song. His subtle and tasteful textures fill up the space beautifully,” notes vocalist and guitarist Dylan Tuthill.

LISTEN to “Baker’s Measurements” Album NOW.

RADO, short for Colorado where the band met and began their musical journey, has taken on a life of its own. “We initially named the band ‘RADO’ where we all met and lived. It was a placeholder, thinking we’d come up with something better,” explains Tuthill. “But people seemed to dig it, so we went with it. When James (Hatch) joined, he referred to it as ‘raw dough’ like what you’d make a pizza with, and we thought it was hilarious. Our fans brought this name to life when our friend Lucia handed out 50 baker's hats at our 2023 Cervantes show, so we now call our fans ‘The Bakery.’”

After years of focusing on live performances, RADO felt it was time to bring their music to the studio. “We’ve been touring for over three years now and have never released a studio album because we focused on the live show and gaining organic jam fans,” says Hatch, the band’s keyboardist. He says at first the studio felt intimidating and out of the band’s comfort zone. “Up to that point, we had really been focusing on the live setting, where we could lean into our improvisation and ‘being in the moment’ style of playing. The band was worried that if we went into the studio, it would sound different from what the band is all about. We really wanted it to capture the essence of the live band.” Mission accomplished. The band’s music, much like their name, embodies a raw and unfiltered creativity.

“I think the album title “Baker’s Measurements” really speaks for itself. We think the record embodies this identity of ‘Raw-Dough,’” confirms Tuthill. “Ultimately, it spawned the ethos and overall sonic and artistic vision we had for the album. A couple of the tracks have major improv dance/jam segments that we know our fans are absolutely going to love because it was off the cuff, first takes, and pure spontaneity.”

The recording process, which took almost a year, was a growth journey. “We treated it as a learning experience, refining our process with each trip to the studio,” says Hatch. “Since this was our first studio effort, the whole process was fun and exciting, especially once we finished one of the songs, ‘River’ and listened to it on repeat with giant smiles on our faces for weeks. It was amazing to hear our music with that crisp studio polish, and it was rewarding to nail the jam sections in just one or two takes, letting it unfold organically with almost no edits.”

RADO’s songwriting process is as dynamic as their performances. “Our process for writing is pretty fluid. Sometimes songs come as fragments, other times they’re more finished,” Tuthill explains. “James typically brings more structured songs with a verse, chorus, bridge, and lyrics, while I bring rougher drafts.”

Trusting the band’s input and collective creative process enables the members to contribute a multitude of songs, resulting in over 50 original tracks, including a Rock Opera about robots, AI, and space. “Without our collaboration and trust in one another, we wouldn’t have so many original songs in such a short period of time. It can be alluring to ‘chase perfection,’” says Hatch, “but one of the things that clicked well between our engineer Logan, Dylan, and the band was making quick decisions and continuing to push forward – not fixing every blemish. I think this also lends itself to the ‘organic’ and ‘live’ feeling of the album.”

The seven-track “Baker’s Measurements” is what RADO dubs a ‘full-spectrum jam-band album,’ showcasing its eclectic musical influences, blending dance, funk, rock, reggae, and jazz. “We wanted to touch on the different elements we bring as a band with our electronic, psychedelic, live improv feel,” says drummer Benny Cummings. Recorded at Camera Jams Studios with engineer Logan Firth, the album is a testament to the band’s dedication to their craft.

Lyrically, “Baker’s Measurements” draws from personal experiences and everyday inspirations. The band looks for oddities, synchronicities, and unique phrases to capture those patterns through the lyrics. “We love innovative sounds that push boundaries while staying true to our style,” explains Cummings. Songs that made the cut on “Baker’s Measurements,” he says, needed to capture certain elements, including “emotional resonance, musical complexity, have a unique sound, an intention and message, be cohesive with the album concept, and highlight the band’s chemistry.”

The band says “Back Nine” is one of their favorite songs on the offering, and was inspired by a memory of a golf tournament and turned into a powerful anthem about overcoming mental struggles.

“It was a random memory I had one day, thinking about a golf tournament I watched as a kid,” says Tuthill. “This golfer, Jean van de Velde, lost the 1999 Open Championship on the last hole while being up three strokes. He basically choked and had this famous chaotic collapse, which for some reason came into my head in 2019 during a solo songwriting session. So, I decided to use the idea as my inspiration. The song focuses on the contrast between the thoughts in our head and how we struggle to overcome them directly and openly, with the chorus stating, ‘Step outside the hallways of your mind and open the door.’”

Formed in 2019, RADO has quickly become a standout in Denver’s vibrant music scene. Known for their psychedelic rock combined with syncopated dance grooves and stylistic melodies, the band’s music is heavily centered around building improvisational jams that reach soaring peaks. Compose Yourself Magazine praises the band, saying, “RADO’s roots are nested deeply in Denver’s jam scene; each member’s eclectic background helps build a diverse yet cohesive sound. Their mutual respect to the scene and commitment to originality has propelled the band to a multi-state tour covering the midwest and east coast. The genre mashing conglomerate of styles has something for everyone. Whether it’s a high-speed four-to-the-floor psychedelic jam, or a low bpm groovy, funk section, RADO keeps the bodies moving.”

The band draws inspiration from a wide range of genres, blending dance, funk, rock, reggae, and jazz into a cohesive jam-band experience. Their influences include The Beatles, Phish, Led Zeppelin, Grateful Dead, and Motown legends like James Jamerson and Bootsy Collins. They also love Hip-Hop and EDM.

RADO is excited to share “Baker’s Measurements” with their fans and continue their musical journey. The band thrives on the connection with its audience. “There’s something about playing live to an audience that we can’t quite describe with words, especially when you’re deep in an improv moment. I suppose the best way to put it would be ‘true presence,’ where everything is deeply connected and interwoven—the band, the audience, and the music,” affirms Tuthill. “It’s a vibe! One of the best feelings in the world, truly.”

Sqwerv has announced the release of their highly anticipated new studio album, “Mirage,” scheduled for September 7th, 2024. Known for their eclectic mix of genres and a deep-rooted connection to Denver's ever-evolving music landscape, the album, recorded at The Keep Recording studios in Denver, Colorado, features seven tracks, each offering a distinct and immersive journey.

Building on the success of Sqwerv’s Hors D’oeuvres EP series—a trio of releases that explored a more stripped-down, experimental approach earlier this year—the band’s latest work delves into a more complex, progressive, and psychedelic rock sound, demonstrating what the band members can achieve in the studio. Characterized by intricate vocal harmonies, layered instrumentation, and a studio-driven production, “Mirage” leverages a variety of sounds, including multiple guitar tones, keyboards, pianos, and string sections.

“Mirage’s” diverse range of musical exploration reveals standout tracks that showcase Sqwerv’s creative evolution. “King George” features a lush string section composed by keyboardist Jack Marty, marking the band’s first venture into orchestral arrangements in the studio. “Polaris” delves into new territory with its blend of heavy psychedelic riffs, introducing a bold, intense sound to Sqwerv’s repertoire, while “When The Dust Settles” is a cinematic experience, incorporating elements of theater and sound design that transport listeners onto a ship on the open ocean for an adventure reminiscent of The Odyssey. Notably, “Morning Song” and “King George” both feature lead vocals by bassist Caden Kramer and Marty, marking their debut as vocalists on Sqwerv studio albums.

In contrast to the band’s lauded previous releases, improvisation is kept at a minimum, and precision and composition are front and center. “Mirage” integrates elements of theater, foley artistry, and synth-driven jams, creating a rich and engaging listening experience. From heavy metal riffs to lilting acoustic guitar passages, the offering takes listeners on an unforgettable sonic journey. The recording process for “Mirage” took place over the course of February 2024, with the album being meticulously crafted over the span of a month.

Of course, Sqwerv’s magic isn’t confined to the studio. Fresh off their consecutive seven-week national tour, guitarist/vocalist Guy Frydenlund, bassist Caden Kramer, drummer Zach Bulgarelli, and keyboardist Jack Marty have proven that their live performances are nothing short of riveting. Seamlessly blending groove, counterpoint, polyrhythms, and on-the-fly improvisation, the band delivers shows that leave audiences craving more. Denver Westword praised Sqwerv, saying, “They let the music do the talking live, and (it) is indicative of the band’s growth since it got together in 2017.”

Sqwerv’s support slot for legends George Clinton and Parliament Funk at the Ogden Theater in early June, along with their upcoming second appearance alongside jam rock favorites Spafford on August 15th, 2024, underscores the band’s ability to command main stages, and deeply connect with listeners—a skill they’ve honed since their early days playing local open jams and clubs.

To celebrate the new release of “Mirage,” as well as coming-off a highly-successful summer tour that had the band playing the midwest to the east coast, Sqwerv is hosting a special release party at Cervantes' Other Side in Denver on September 7th – the same day the album is available on all streaming platforms. The event will feature performances by Chirp, led by Guy Frydenlund's brother, and Denver-based Break Signals.

Fans and music lovers are invited to join Sqwerv and experience “Mirage” live for the first time. Tickets are available HERE.

Veteran Los Angeles bassist and composer Derek Frank, widely recognized for his work with Gwen Stefani, Shania Twain, and Air Supply, will bring his instrumental band back to the NAMM Show on January 24th in Anaheim, CA; The Alibi on March 2nd in Telluride, CO; The Baked Potato on March 27th in Studio City, CA; and the Liberty Bar in Mammoth, CA, on March 28th and 29th. These performances are in support of his highly-praised third album, Origin Story.

Furthermore, on June 7th, the Derek Frank Band will make its debut at GoPro Mountain Games in Vail and the Newpark Summer Concert Series in Park City, UT on August 15th. The bassist, best known for his work touring with pop icons such as the aforementioned Shania Twain, Gwen Stefani, Air Supply, Kelly Clarkson, and Shakira (among others), led his band through a run of shows over the summer and fall of 2024, performing across California, Oregon, Washington, Utah, Colorado, and Florida. Now, he’s excited to hit the road again.

With a career spanning decades as a sought-after session and touring musician, Derek has stepped into the spotlight to showcase his own artistry. Released in March 2024, Origin Story is a genre-defying blend of jazz, funk, southern rock, and 1970s soundtrack influences. Produced by Grammy-winning producer Jim Scott (Tedeschi Trucks Band, Tom Petty, Wilco, Sting) at his all-analog recording studio, the album has earned comparisons to Lettuce, Snarky Puppy, and the Tedeschi Trucks Band. The tightly, well-crafted offering has been playfully described as a collection of “feisty, punchy and sizzling, blues-fired delights” and “seventies-inspired funky instrumental jams with fewer bass solos than you would expect.”

Origin Story has been gaining momentum, holding a top 30 position on the Relix Magazine/JamBands.com radio charts for four consecutive months. The record features standout contributions from renowned musicians, including Brent Mason on guitar (GRAMMY winner, ACM Guitarist of the Year, Musicians Hall of Fame inductee, and CMA Musician of the Year) and Karl Denson on saxophone (legendary jam band saxophonist of Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, The Greyboy Allstars and a member of the Rolling Stones touring band).

Derek’s solo work has received widespread critical acclaim from influential outlets such as American Songwriter Magazine, Bass Player Magazine, Music Connection Magazine, “Everyone Loves Guitar Podcast,” and “The Bass Shed Podcast.” Bass Magazine praised Origin Story as “a collection of eight instrumental songs, blending funk, jazz, blues, and seventies soundtrack music into a mix that’s equally at home on jazz radio, on a jam band playlist, or on a throwback cop show sound.” Guitar World Magazine featured Derek in an article titled, “Shania Twain Got Me Into Alternate Tunings. I Use Them a Lot on Gigs Now, and They’ve Seeped Into My Solo Stuff: What Session Bass Supremo Derek Frank Learned From Playing With Pop’s A-Listers – And How He Brings It to His Own Music.”

His discography includes Let the Games Begin (2009) and the aptly titled Eleven Years Later (2020), which features Grammy-winning blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa. The culmination of the albums showcase Derek’s growth as a composer and artist. His accomplishments, such as a Hollywood Independent Music Awards nomination for Best Instrumental Song, underscore his commitment to pushing creative boundaries.

This same passion and artistry are evident in the dynamic sound of the Derek Frank Band, which has drawn favorable comparisons to artists such as Lettuce, Cory Wong, The Motet, The Meters, and John Scofield. Comprised of other oft-lauded musicians, the Derek Frank Band features players who have performed with the likes of: Tedeschi Trucks Band, Social Distortion, Soul Asylum, Tom Morello, and Miley Cyrus, to name a few.

“If you’re into funk and jazz (and even if you’re not), and you enjoy well-written music with funky grooves, you can’t go wrong with these guys.” - Music Connection Magazine

Veteran LA bass player Derek Frank takes a detour from his usual duties backing up major pop stars and presents us with his disco-fied new instrumental single, “Goin’ Stagg.”

Recently recorded with his touring band at Stagg Street Studios in Los Angeles, “Goin’ Stagg” is an infectious instrumental journey that blends sinewy thumps and jazz with retro disco and funk elements, creating an irresistible groove that transports listeners to the dance floor. With a vibrant horn arrangement and a tightly doubled bass and Clavinet line, each note pulses with energy, drawing inspiration from classic funk and disco while incorporating modern jazz improvisation. The track's dynamic shifts and playful melody showcase the musicians' virtuosity, capturing the essence of celebration.

As a solo artist, Derek Frank has released three critically acclaimed albums: Let the Games Begin (2009), Eleven Years Later (2020), and Origin Story (2024). He has built a stellar reputation as a touring bassist, playing for global icons such as Shania Twain, Gwen Stefani, Air Supply, Shakira, and Kelly Clarkson. Despite his busy schedule backing A-list artists, Frank has cultivated his own distinctive musical voice, inspired by the soundtrack of his 1970s and 1980s childhood.

Derek and his handpicked five- to seven-piece band craft an eclectic mix of funk, blues, soul, jazz, and Southern rock, channeling the feel of vintage soundtrack music. His compositions are defined by tight arrangements, slinky grooves, and a deep sense of musical interplay that prioritizes taste and feel over flashy technique.

Frank’s solo work has earned praise from Bass Magazine, Guitar World Magazine, American Songwriter Magazine, Bass Player Magazine, Music Connection Magazine, and podcasts such as Everyone Loves Guitar and The Bass Shed. Additionally, he received a Hollywood Independent Music Award nomination for Best Instrumental Song. His work has drawn comparisons to Lettuce, Vulfpeck, Cory Wong, Snarky Puppy, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Karl Denson, and John Scofield.

Growing up in Pittsburgh, Frank’s passion for music was sparked by the TV shows, movies, and MTV culture of the ‘70s and ‘80s. His love for bass emerged unexpectedly when he picked up the instrument at a music store while waiting for a guitar lesson. That moment launched a lifelong career that would take him to Los Angeles, where he became one of the city’s most sought-after touring and session bassists.

With “Goin’ Stagg,” Frank once again showcases his prowess as a bandleader and solo artist, delivering a track that embodies the best of funk, jazz, and disco. The single drops May 28 on all streaming platforms.

Out May 16, Virtuoso bassist and composer Derek Frank’s new instrumental “Barker’s Boogie” serves up a soulful fusion of funk, jazz, and blues-rock — anchored by his unmistakable low-end swagger. Packed with horns, gritty rhythm, and bluesy-rock flair, the track features fiery slide guitar from Johnny Stachela of The Allman-Betts Band/Duane Betts & Palmetto Motel.

A funk-forward homage to the horn-driven, envelope-filtered jams of the 1970s, “Barker’s Boogie” tips its hat to legends like The Brecker Brothers, Tower of Power, and Steely Dan. “I was particularly inspired by Steely Dan’s “Black Friday” and The Brecker Brothers’ “Inside Out,” Frank says. “I wanted that shuffle feel, and writing with Johnny in mind made total sense—it’s the perfect vehicle for his voice on slide guitar.”

Recorded live at Stagg Street Studios in Los Angeles, the single features a full-band lineup that brings the track’s raw energy to life: punchy bass, percussive keys, soulful horns, and a tight groove that hits hard. Stachela’s soaring slide melodies ignite the track, adding an edge that nods to both Southern rock and psychedelic funk.

The collaboration between Frank and Stachela was sparked during a recent blues session, where the chemistry was instant. “I had done a session for a blues record with Johnny a few weeks prior to this recording, loved his playing, and thought it would be really fun to feature him on something. Johnny’s tone and phrasing are just killer.”

Barker’s Boogie” also serves as a gritty departure from Frank’s more disco-leaning singles, like March’s “Goin’ Stagg,” offering a different taste of his deep-rooted musicality.

A respected solo artist with three critically acclaimed albums (Let the Games Begin, Eleven Years Later, Origin Story), Frank has built a stellar reputation on and off stage. When he’s not crafting his own funk-fueled soundscapes, he’s performing with music royalty—including tours with Shania Twain, Gwen Stefani, Air Supply, Shakira, and Kelly Clarkson.

At the beginning of May, Frank will spend a few weeks in New York performing with Kelly Clarkson on The Kelly Clarkson Show and select concerts before hitting the road this summer with Don Felder—the legendary Eagles guitarist and co-writer of classics like “Hotel California,” “Victim of Love,” and “Those Shoes.” The Brotherhood of Rock 40-date North American amphitheatre tour — featuring Felder, Kevin Cronin (former lead singer of REO Speedwagon), and Styx — kicks off May 28, 2025, in Greenville, South Carolina, and runs through August. The tour will make stops at MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre (Tampa, FL), Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion (The Woodlands, TX), Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre (Denver, CO), Toyota Pavilion at Concord (Concord, CA), Isleta Amphitheater (Albuquerque, NM), PNC Music Pavilion (Charlotte, NC), and Empower Federal Credit Union Amphitheater (Syracuse, NY), among others.

With “Barker’s Boogie,” Frank continues to prove he’s not only one of the most versatile bassists in the game—but also a dynamic composer capable of channeling the soul, sass, and swagger of a funk-rock era gone by.

Heavy Diamond Ring released its much-anticipated LP, Wildflower Lane, on June 13, 2025, via Gitcha Records. The album is available on all major digital platforms, with vinyl and CD editions offered through the band’s website. In the lead-up to the release, the band steadily rolled out a series of singles, each offering a glimpse into the album’s emotional depth and sonic landscape.

Wildflower Lane marks a fresh chapter for the band, rooted in the long-standing musical partnership between vocalist-trumpeter Sarah Anderson and guitarist Paul DeHaven, who began collaborating in 2004. After the disbanding of beloved indie-folk group Paper Bird, the duo formed Heavy Diamond Ring and began cultivating a new sound that has been described as “open-road, long-drive music” and “a little bit of twang and a whole lot of beef.” The current lineup features Anderson and DeHaven alongside longtime collaborators Blake Stepan on bass, Mike Lang on keys, and Orion Tate Ignelzi on drums—the same seasoned crew that recorded the new album.

“Heavy Diamond Ring creates a sound that feels as classic as rolling down the windows in the summer—a superhighway to a new frontier,” 303 Magazine praised. CS Indy lauded the band for its blend of “contemporary indie-folk that goes down easy,” highlighting subtle, snaky guitar work, rich harmony vocals, and Anderson’s captivating voice.

Recorded in just five days at Cowboy Cowabunga Studio in Evergreen, Colorado, Wildflower Lane came together under the constraints of distance and time. After DeHaven relocated to New Mexico, the band adapted by exchanging demos via email before meeting to record live with minimal overdubs. “We had to work quickly, but it also led us not to overthink our decisions,” DeHaven said. “We trusted the spirit in the room and moved forward.” The album was produced by Mark Anderson—Sarah’s brother—who has been a consistent creative force behind the band’s previous recordings.

Heavy Diamond Ring features Sarah Anderson, Paul DeHaven, Blake Stepan, Mike Lang and Orion Tate Ignelzi.

The sonic ethos of Wildflower Lane reflects the band’s desire to keep things raw and honest. Though the group initially planned to track entirely to tape, it retained that spirit by limiting channels, recording mostly live, and often sharing a single 10 × 20-foot room where microphone bleed made overdubbing impractical. “We kept it very close to the in-the-room moments we captured,” DeHaven said.

Lyrically, the album explores themes of enduring love, connection, and introspection. “The overall theme is commitment as an anchor in the depths,” Anderson explained. Songs such as “Happy Days” find solace amid uncertainty, while “To Know You” explores intimacy and emotional understanding. “Like Lightning,” written by Anderson, reflects on motherhood and the swift passage of time. Other standout tracks include “Don’t Go It Alone,” a celebration of mutual aid and community, and “Levity,” a stripped-down love song.

DeHaven, the principal songwriter, typically sends Anderson dozens of demos; she curates the ones to which she feels the strongest vocal and emotional connection. “The ones that write themselves are the best,” DeHaven noted. “That clarity is definitely a hallmark of an HDR song.” While DeHaven leans on vignettes and narratives shaped by personal experience, Anderson’s selections elevate the emotional resonance of each track. “I generally don’t write from an overly personal perspective,” she said, “but the songs on this record call inward—away from the world at large—to find order, peace, and meaning.”

The band also revisited “Ticonderoga,” a song once performed live with Paper Bird but never previously recorded. “It’s about the confluence of two rivers becoming one—a beautiful metaphor for partnership,” Anderson said.

The name Heavy Diamond Ring grew from a lyric DeHaven penned during a grueling tour: “My heart is like a heavy diamond ring.” The line stuck. “It’s about the relationship to something you love that isn’t always easy but is always worth it,” he said. “Doing it together has never been a question.”

In support of the new record, the band recently wrapped a music video for “Don’t Go It Alone,” directed by filmmaker Jasmine McGlade, whom Anderson met backstage after performing with Nathaniel Rateliff and the Colorado Symphony. McGlade—who executive-produced the hit film La La Land, which earned 14 Academy Award® nominations and won six Oscars®—is an award-winning artist whose work spans writing, directing, photography, and painting. She has also directed music videos for GRAMMY-nominated artists including Gregory Alan Isakov and for labels such as Atlantic, Dualtone, and Yep Roc.

“Jasmine and I hit it off and became very close very quickly,” Anderson said. Shot at the band’s longtime community hub—a 14-acre Evergreen property affectionately called the Dude Ranch—the video plays with color, texture, and a nostalgic ’70s aesthetic. The property is more than a backdrop: it’s where DeHaven lived for 14 years and where Anderson’s brother now operates the studio. “It’s where we recorded the whole album,” Anderson added.

Watch HDR featuring Nathaniel Rateliff Here: “When You’re Away”

Writing for Wildflower Lane began in May 2024, shortly after the release of the band’s previous record, All Out of Angels, which featured a duet with Nathaniel Rateliff and was produced by Ben Wysocki of The Fray. “That last album took nearly three years to finish,” DeHaven recalled. “This time, we wanted to move faster. It tested us, but it also brought out the best in us.” He added that the band may carry some of this album’s “quick, intuitive” approach into future projects.

Though HDR sits loosely within Americana, the members resist strict classification. “It’s not country, and it’s not folk like Pete Seeger or anything,” DeHaven said. Influences range from Neil Young and Dolly Parton to Townes Van Zandt and John Prine. “We’re rooted in the American songwriting tradition,” he added.

For Heavy Diamond Ring, the new album isn’t merely a body of work—it’s a testament to the staying power of collaboration. “The best part of making this record was the immediacy,” DeHaven said. “It was fast and honest. We showed up with what we had and let the songs guide us.”

Heavy Diamond Ring will celebrate with an album-release party on June 21 in Evergreen, Colorado.
