Lotus and Big Gigantic Swap Remixes

In the midst of issuing a pair of new EP's (Feather on Wood and Oil on Glass) and also in the midst of a full-on tour, instrumental electronic band Lotus - have found themselves part of an interesting remix project. Lotus member Jesse Miller has remixed a track of Big Gigantic (an alias for Motet saxophonist/producer Dominic Lalli and drummer Jeremy Salken), "Thinking Out Loud," off of the album ‘Fire It Up,' while Lalli returns the favor, remixing the Lotus track, "Simian," off ‘Oil on Glass.'

"Dom's compositions always feature strong melodies, so I wanted to keep that element mostly in tact for this remix while using a different tempo and beat than the original," explains Miller. "I spent a day bouncing tracks to an old 4-track tape machine to get some analog grit and manual EQing on the mix, hence the Cassette moniker in the title."

These two exclusive remixes can be streamed online or download here. Downloads can be in MP3 format or other formats - including full quality .wav files - and fans will set their own price for the downloads. All proceeds will be donated to Musicopia. Musicopia is a non-profit organization that brings educational music enrichment programs to schools and communities throughout the Delaware Valley.

In addition to this Lotus/Big Gigantic cross-pollination on these two aforementioned remix tracks, both bands will be touring together in November for several shows - see the list of dates below. What better way to get prepared for these upcoming shows than to check out these beat-heavy remixes.

For their epic fall tour, Lotus broke new ground in a way that no other rock band has done prior, it allowed their legion of fans to pay-what-they-want for tickets. The Pay-What-You-Want-Tour featuring Lotus was an eight night run of shows in western U.S. states, sponsored by Ticketweb, that let the fans decide how much their show ticket would cost. At the $15.00 Pay-What-You-Want level or higher, fans received free digital downloads of Feather on Wood and Oil on Glass. The Pay-What-You-Want-Tour was part of a larger fall tour that still finds Lotus crisscrossing the United States.  In addition, Lotus recently announced a New Year's eve run in Pennsylvania that will culminate with an epic New Year's Eve Show with MSTRKRFT at Philadelphia's Electric Factory. Leading up to the big night, the band will stop at Mr. Smalls Theatre (Pittsburgh, PA) on 12/29 and The Note (West Chester, PA) on 12/30, both with support act Tigersapien.

Meshell Ndegeocello | Boulder Theater | Review

Legendary jazz-funk bassist Meshell Ndegeocello recently brought her band to Boulder Theater in support of her new album, Devil's Halo – a show totally unlike the one I expected (more on that in a minute).

EOTO Fire Their Lazers in Denver

Describe them anyway you want; whether it be glitch, trance, trip-hop, ambient, dub-step, or electronica.  The fact remains that the explosive improvisational duo known as EOTO are just plain badass.  Multi-instrumentalists and sometimes String Cheese Incident members Jason Hann and Michael Travis continue to explore the universe and conquer galaxies with their house-pounding beats and cosmic rhythms.  What was born out of the extended SCI hiatus as an experimental project has grown to a full-on club headliner.  With the release of

Bob Dylan | Greek Theatre | 10/11/09 | Review

Bob Dylan still rocking a place like the Greek Theater in 2009? Anyone who would stated that to be possible in the late sixties would have others thinking it to be very unlikely. By the late sixties Dylan had crashed his motorcycle badly and had turned into a recluse poet, shying away from the claims that he was one of the big “prophets” or “fathers” of the hippie generation. Dylan rejected the notion preferring to be labeled a human being like the rest of us. He changed his harmonica folk blues to a more country tinged rock n’ roll.

The Mother Hips release Pacific Dust today

The Mother Hips have flown under the radar as true indie music pioneers for almost two decades.  With the release of their new album Pacific Dust (available October 27th on Camera Records), California's unsung psych-pop heroes tell their story. Hailed by critics for their "rootsy mix of 70s rock and power pop" (pitchfork.com) and for their unflinching ability to "sing it sweet and play it dirty" (New Yorker), on Pacific Dust The Hips' signature sound rings more genuine and relevant than ever before.

The Hips - led by co-founders Tim Bluhm (vocals/guitar) and Greg Loiacono (guitar/vocals) - have been playing music for nearly 18 years, and in the process, have had the luxury of exploring and refining their craft. For the band's seventh full-length studio album, The Mother Hips have never been more primed to share their well-traveled tales - the long days and nights on the road, the gritty politics, the smart inward reflections and man, the music! - all delivered with a most appealing balance of Americana storytelling and their California-burnished rock.

Pacific Dust's compositions about penning a song in your kitchen at 3:00 am (the thundering album opener "White Falcon Fuzz"), record company politics (garage-rock boogie "Third Floor Story"), and a father and son's relationship through music (on the ballad "Young Charles Ives") indeed tell the story of many American rock bands. But here's why it matters: The Mother Hips have survived, and in fact thrived, throughout the journey - and Pacific Dust, with its bittersweet melodies, poignant lyrics, and strong and gritty musicianship, is a perfect example of why.

The Mother Hips owe most of their success to their large and loyal fanbase.  Earlier releases such as Part-Timer Goes Full, Green Hills of Earth, and Red Tandy have become almost cult classics among indie music buffs, and the band's most recent 2007 album, Kiss the Crystal Flake, offered proof that the band still continues to attract new supporters. Over the years, the band has worked with and played alongside a slew of renowned/respected colleagues including super-producer Rick Rubin, Wilco, Johnny Cash, and many others.

Today, armed with their newest release Pacific Dust, The Hips are poised to take their experience and talent to another level for this next leg of their already epic journey.

The band will tour this fall in support of Pacific Dust.  The complete list of currently confirmed tour dates is as follows:

The String Cheese Incident releases Trick or Treat, 2-Disc and Box Set, Today

With the one-time constant touring machine otherwise known as The String Cheese Incident slowing their schedule considerably in recent years, fans get a chance to relive the group's legendary "Hulaween" shows on the forthcoming live release, Trick or Treat. The two-disc release - set to hit today on CD, vinyl, and digitally - is culled from several of these epic shows by The String Cheese Incident.   An expanded 9-disc deluxe box set edition of Trick or Treat will also be available in very limited quantity.  Pre-sale on the deluxe box set began September 23, 2009 at 12:00 PM EDT - with the first 200 who pre-ordered to receive a Trick or Treat cover art poster signed by members of SCI, and the first 500 who order being automatically entered to win one of 30 uncut Trick or Treat poster sheets, featuring the Michael Everett cover art poster sheet, plus all 7 mini-posters from the box set.  (These exclusive uncut sheets will also be signed by the members of SCI!).

Known to perform special concerts comprised heavily of cover tunes each Halloween, Trick or Treat offers selections from SCI performances recorded at Atlanta's Variety Playhouse (1998), Philadelphia's Electric Factory (1999), Portland's State Theatre (2000), New York City (2001), Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium (2002), Sin City's Cox Pavillion (2003), and Madison's Exhibition Center at Alliant Energy Center.

The 9-disc limited edition box set of Trick or Treat includes seven complete sets - featuring must-hear renditions of Beatles ("Come Together"), Beastie Boys ("No Sleep Till Brooklyn"), Grateful Dead ("Shakedown Street"), KC & The Sunshine Band ("Get Down Tonight"), and Phish ("The Wedge") classics, among many others. The Trick or Treat deluxe box set also features signed & numbered original artwork from Michael Everett, special commemorative mini-posters from the Hulaween shows, personalized liner notes from the band, a photo booklet by famed rock photographer C. Taylor Crothers, and plenty of special surprises.

Formed in Colorado during 1993, The String Cheese Incident has long been considered one of the leaders of the thriving "jam band" scene. Comprised of members Michael Kang (acoustic/electric mandolin, electric guitar, and violin), Michael Travis (drums and percussion), Bill Nershi (acoustic guitar, lap steel guitar, and electric slide guitar), Kyle Hollingsworth (piano, organ, Rhodes, and accordion), Keith Moseley (bass guitar), and Jason Hann (percussion, joined SCI in 2004), the group performed regularly between 1993-2007. And in the process, they built a large fanbase on the strength of their live show, as well as such classic releases as Outside Inside, Untying the Not, and One Step Closer.

In recent years, the band members have focused on solo projects, although The String Cheese Incident did reunite onstage this year for a show-stopping performance at the ROTHBURY Festival. Now, here's your chance to experience The String Cheese Incident in all their in-concert glory time and time again, with Trick or Treat.

Also this fall, String Cheese Incident members Kyle Hollingsworth and Billy Nershi release a couple of solo works.  Look for Emmitt-Nershi Band's New Country Blues and Hollingsworth's Then There's Now, in stores now.
