Hoxeyville Music Festival 2010 | Review & Photos

“Get Lost in the Great North Woods” is the perfect way to describe Hoxeyville Music Festival.  The 8th annual festival was held in the Manistee National Forest in Northern Michigan.  Each year Hoxeyville has grown and improved this year followed suit and featured a bigger and better lineup than ever before, cleaner and more organized festival grounds, and the largest crowd to date at around 4,000 people.  One of the greatest things about Hoxeyville is the family atmosphere, whether it was a grandparent and grandchild watching a mid-day set, lon

Len Dell’Amico's Everything Must Go

Dear Dead Heads:

In 1980, the Grateful Dead needed a director to shoot the planned multi-city broadcast of their Halloween show from Radio City Music Hall.   They brought a guy named Len Dell’Amico out to San Francisco for an interview, and he managed to navigate through one large Hell’s Angel and some fat, potent spliffs sufficiently well to persuade Jerry Garcia that he was the guy for the job.  The result was Dead Ahead, which went on to become a platinum home video.

The Rex Foundation and DSO

In addition to continuing the Grateful Dead concert experience at our shows we are working with The Rex Foundation to continue their legacy of giving. We have recently created a donation module on our fanclub-ticketing page that allows you to make a donation to the Rex Foundation while purchasing tickets to our shows.

For our summer tour former Grateful Dead tie-dye artist Courtenay Pollock designed a backdrop for us. We are pleased to raffle this off with part of the proceeds benefiting the Rex Foundation. If you would like to bid on this one of a kind tie-dye design on 4 10' x 10' panels, please send your bid and contact info to: brett@darkstarorchestra.net.

August 9, 2010 marks the 15 year anniversary of legendary musician and Grateful Dead co-founder Jerry Garcia's death. As a way to honor his musical and community legacy, the gifted musicians on this compilation have generously contributed stirring live performances of Jerry Garcia songs to benefit the Rex Foundation. The album includes four exclusive previously unreleased live Garcia songs from Phish, Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers, The String Cheese Incident, and Keller & The Keels. Other artists in the order they appear on the album are: Railroad Earth, The Black Crowes, Moonalice, Yonder Mountain String Band, The Waybacks, Widespread Panic, Hot Buttered Rum, and Steve Kimock Crazy Engine. Christopher Paul Stelling: A Songwriter With a Story To Tell

Take one look at his road-worn, weathered guitar, and you know that Christopher Paul Stelling is a musician with a story to tell. With a heartfelt voice, dynamic finger-picked guitar stylings, and a songwriting approach that combines folkloric, mythological, and religious imagery, Stelling has forged a style that is all his own, yet hauntingly familiar. Think along the lines of John Fahey, Tom Waits, and Skip James.

Stelling has a busy few weeks ahead- this Thursday, August 19th, he’ll be appearing on East Village Radio’s Belly of the Beast at 8pm, and next Tuesday, August 24th, you can catch his signature blend of hellfire gospel at New York’s Rockwood Music Hall at 9pm, right after Hoots & Hellmouth.

Stelling has managed to revive a sense of musical storytelling and mastery over his instrument that was thought to be long since forgotten, especially in the modern era. His songs evoke everything from delicate fragility to blistering ferocity-those who witness his live shows are often left in disbelief, and wanting more.

Over the past decade, Stelling has traversed the country exploring the roots of American music. Originally hailing from Daytona Beach, he's since hopped from Boulder to Boston, Orlando to Asheville and everywhere in-between, until deciding to call Brooklyn home. Keep your ears out for a full-length album from Christopher Paul Stelling in 2011.

Upcoming Tour Dates:

August 28th – Brooklyn, NY – Goodbye Blue Monday

September 4th – Butler, PA - Associated Artists of Butler County

October 3rd – Brooklyn, NY – The Rock Shop

The Heavy Pets | 'Heavy Pets' | Review

Cut from the same cloth as Animal Liberation Orchestra, G-Love and the Special Sauce, or the Dave Matthews Band comes a jam-pop band for the 21st century known as The Heavy Pets.  This Florida-based collective has been touring like mad since their inception five years ago, and have finally delivered their first full-length studio album.  The result is a sturdy, uplifting project that could cement the Heavy Pets as the next band to break the mold and enter the ma

Energetic & Inspiring, Spiritual Rez is delivering the goods

This 6-piece roots-reggae, rock outfit is packing out clubs on a nightly basis and breaking out brand new material off of their newest release, The NexusSpiritual Rez is quickly becoming the talk of 2010.

Winners of the 2007 Boston Music Award for Best World Music Act and Alumni of the prestigious Berklee College of Music, the band provides a fresh blend of Reggae, Funk, Afrobeat and Rock to give one of the most energetic live shows around.

The band’s newest release, The Nexus, is a winning combination of the group’s positive songwriting, energy-filled live performances and their heavily inspired roots-reggae sound. “Alone Again”, showcases the group’s ability to create infectious grooves mixed with bright horn lines and searing guitar, all while giving a nod to the influences of an earlier, gentler, Wailers sound.  The powerful, “Rollin’ Dutches”, captures the band’s Ska-punk roots with tight changes and quick-lipped lyrics. The albums closing cut,  “More Than I Am”, brings everything all together.  The bands positive grasp on life shines through in Toft Willingham and Van Gordon Martin’s lyrics as the rest of the group holds it down.  The dueling patterns of guitar and horns are very tasteful and the ending crescendo reels in the listener, leaving them wanting more.

What really shines about The Nexus, is how the band’s lively stage performance and organic musicianship is captured in the studio.  The Sweat-inducing, body-shaking grooves that are created every night on tour, are recreated and mixed with expertise.  This allowed the band to formulate, The Nexus, into an emotion filled experience that really punctuates the being of Spiritual Rez.

There’s no stopping Spiritual Rez!  After years of touring the country, performing at prestigious events (Bear Creek Music Festival, Camp Bisco and The Lake Eden Arts Festival) and promoting an uplifting mix of music and attitude, the band has been fortunate to share the stage with many of their influences.  These include George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, Toots and The Maytals, Steel Pulse and Bernie Worrell (Funkadelic original member, Talking Heads), who has often been a featured member. These experiences have given Spiritual Rez the ability to hone their sound and songwriting, but also share their take on reggae and funk with some of the biggest innovators of those genres.

The Boston-based band has been described by Skipper’s Smokehouse (Tampa, FL) as having “the ferocious live energy and bombast of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and PFunk, to their own blending of chill island grooves with raucous urban tribal vibes.

Their live experience continues to leave a trail of worn-out dancers as Spiritual Rez is now recognized as a band with "a higher consciousness of respect and energy through music" and will continue to grow in the hearts of music fans across the globe.

Check out Spiritual Rez with special guest Bernie Worrell on Friday, September 17th, 2010 at The Paradise Rock Club & Lounge

MMJ's Carl Broemel Shares Video Performances of Three Solo Songs

Leading up to the release of his solo album All Birds Say, which is out next week on August 31st (ATO Records), My Morning Jacket guitarist Carl Broemel has been steadily revealing performances of some of the tracks off the record.   You may have seen Broemel do a rendition of “Questions” over at MOG, creating an epic solo version of the track that builds to a thrillingly noisy climax.  He also played the earnest and whimsical “Enough,” which recently debuted at My Old Kentucky Blog. Lastly, his version of “Carried Away,” a contemplative and heartfelt ballad that My Morning Jacket recently performed, premiered at JamBase.  Please feel free to post and share all three videos!

As evident by these three clips, Broemel is a sophisticated songwriter  and an elegantly effortless performer.  He has the lyrical perspective of an individual who truly reflects and learns from his life’s experiences.  However, Broemel favors a Zen-like approach, keeping his philosophical musings from getting anywhere near being preachy.  Needless to say, MMJ fans who know him solely from the fiery riffs and guitar solos he performs with the band are going to see a whole other side of him.

Click HERE for photos of Carl, an mp3 off the album (which you are also welcome to post/share), and more info on him.

Mile High Music Festival Turns Three Years Old

I have to admit, when I heard several months ago that the Mile High Music Festival would be recycling headliners, and only a few years into its tenure on the festival scene, I rolled my eyes and considered skipping the whole thing this year.  I mean, Dave Matthews is only one of thousands of musicians suitable for headlining a festival with
