On Tour

Toots and the Maytals | Fox Theater | 4/1/2013 | Review

Recently I had the special opportunity to see the legendary Toots and the Maytals, just a couple of blocks from my house at the Fox Theater in Boulder CO. My work thus far with Grateful Web has been mostly reviewing jam-bands, taking notes on their instrumentation, and reporting commendable jams. So, as you could imagine, this was a much different experience than I was used to.

Lotus | Boulder Theater | Boulder, CO | 4/4/2013 | Review/Photos

When Lotus comes to Boulder, Colorado, the streets are just a bit more abuzz. People standing in front of the Boulder Theater are giving off a charge of excitement, and there’s a stimulating, magnetic sense in the air that tells us of what’s to come.

The 100 Percent Are The Real Deal

On an otherwise nondescript Thursday night at Shine, local band The 100 Percent made the most of their 45-minute set. Packing in nine soul-soaked original tunes that had the crowd cheering and clapping, often before the song was even complete, the band displayed chops that show they have what it takes to differentiate themselves in the oversaturated Boulder music scene.

Preview: The Lumineers & Dr. Dog @ Greek Theatre | 4/19/13

The past few weeks have brought hints of spring to the Bay Area. Crystal blue skies and near-70s temperatures in San Francisco spark thoughts of baseball and brunch under the sun and afternoons spent in Dolores Park. And most importantly, concerts in the beautiful outdoors. Outside Lands and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass are still a few months away, but UC Berkeley’s outdoor haven The Greek Theatre is kicking off their season later this month.

The Magic Beans | Fox Theater | Boulder, CO | 3/22/13 | Review

The Magic Beans step on to the stage and come out swinging with Jabu Jabu’s Belly, the bouncy feel-good tune that the crowd warms up to immediately. Scott Hachey is sporting his notorious smirk and a brand spanking-new guitar, a sexy ‘Singing Mountain” acoustic built of bone and abalone down in Pinecliffe, Colorado.

Shakedown Street with Melvin Seals | Boulder Theater | Review

While every state has their bevy of Grateful Dead cover bands, Colorado is proud to put Shakedown Street at the top of their list. Playing shows all over the Front Range and Rocky Mountains, they’ve built themselves into the beloved act they are today. Even Rob Eaton of Dark Star Orchestra plays with members on occasion when jamming around Colorado.

Dark Star Orchestra | Ogden Theater | 3/30/2013 | Review/Photos

The date was March 30th, 2013. Or was it October 9th, 1977? Either way, the city of Denver held camp to the throngs of Deadheads along Colfax. On our way into McNichols Arena, I mean The Ogden Theater; there was a buzz in the air that only a live concert can produce.

Del McCoury & Sam Bush | Boulder Theater | 3/24/13 | Review

An unlikely collaboration between two roots music legends needed a proper introduction. Multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, and vocalist Sam Bush is second only to John Hartford the most influential player in creating the style of newgrass music. A progressive take on bluegrass that fused elements of rock, psychedelia, and reggae was developed in the late 1960s and became incredibly influential on generations of successors to come.

Palenke Soultribe | MAR | New Music Review

It’s free and restrained, naive and formulaic; it’s the trajectory of what’s to come in tune these days and going forward. Palenke Soultribe’s second entry in their recent audio trilogy, the foreign MAR, is right out of the textbook of the ethnic familiar-obscure.

Keller Williams | Higher Ground | South Burlington, VT | 3/16/13

As I ate the best sushi I had eaten in as long as I can remember, I had to keep looking over my shoulder, half expecting to see Keller Williams walk into the room.  In terms of our physical proximity to one and other, it wasn’t that big of a stretch. He was playing later that night in South Burlington. But Keller and I have a connection that runs much deeper than this superficial story.
