The Rumble Strips Tour North America

The Rumble Strips- for the Grateful Web

In 'Girls and Weather', The Rumble Strips have recorded a truly classic debut album.  With their somewhat eccentric origins in Devon, the four young men from Tavistock have fashioned a set of songs steeped with huge, life-affirming choruses all awash with the optimism of youth. This is a  band whose sound and look is entirely their own: thundering drums and  piano, brass to stir the soul and singer Charlie Waller's voice – a  thing of rare beauty and power suggesting the arrival of a genuine new  star.

Among the band's most passionate fans is producer du jour, Mark Ronson. Having heard Rumble Strips' spine tingling reworking of Amy Winehouse's 'Back to Black', Ronson fell in love with the band. He promptly invited Charlie to sing lead vocals at his acclaimed BBC Electric Proms performance at the London Roundhouse last year, with Charlie's performance widely declared the highlight of the evening. Further guest appearances have followed as Ronson and Charlie's relationship has blossomed, with the most recent show seeing Charlie being flown out to Coachella to sing with Mark.

"Girls and Weather" opens with Charlie hollering as if his life depended on it, "I ain't got no soul". What follows is 12 songs bristling with energy, frantic rhythms, wide-eyed yearning and certainly no little soul.

Indeed, the Young Soul Rebel spirit of the singles 'Alarm Clock' and 'Motorcycle' is evident on the album, but the record also takes in a range of less expected (but no less profound) influences: the gorgeous harmonies are born out of the band's love of 1950s doo-wop, whilst the epic nature of Charlie's song writing recalls the oddball genius of both Adam Ant and Queen (as imagined by the Stax house band).

Elsewhere, the brass on 'Oh Creole' is like a rousing, doom laden Van Morrison classic, whilst the E Street holler of 'Hate Me (You Do)' owes its anthemic quality to Tom Gorbutt's inspired saxophone opening. Clocking in under two minutes, August single 'Girls and Boy in Love' is all hand clap rhythms, Motown piano and gorgeous, bitter sweet melodies - a festival anthem for certain.

Recalling the achingly close, three part harmonies of Rubber Soul era Beatles, 'Don't Dumb Down' is a scathing tale of faking to impress.  Key lyrics:  "You don't come from London do you? / But, sometimes you sound like you do / What the hell is that all about?"

The album closes with arguably it's strongest moment.  Built around a huge, Talking Heads-esque piano rhythm, 'Hands' is an extraordinary piece of song writing. Charlie's almost spoken word delivery is like an anglicized Springsteen, as he talks of finding himself, "on the hard shoulder of the motorway / to my feet I tried to complain / but I don't think they were listening", as the song build to almighty crescendo.

The Rumble Strips are a truly special group:  Pure, sad and romantic. Theirs are songs that strike a chord with the masses, whilst remaining enigmatic and standing alone from the crowd.

THE DELERIUM D-TOUR 2008 NORTH AMERICAN TOUR

DELERIUM- for the Grateful Web

Electronic music pioneers DELERIUM have announced the D-Tour 2008 North American Tour, which kicks off in Vancouver September 11 and ends in Atlanta October 4.  This marks the first major tour for front man Bill Leeb and Delerium in five years. Fans can expect guest vocalists from past Delerium albums to make special appearances, including Sixpence None The Richer's Leigh Nash and chanteuse Kristy Thirsk. Up and coming fellow Nettwerk artists Elsiane and Morgan Page will support the entire 16-date run.

Delerium has also been spending time in the studio working on their next project, an acoustic session that will be comprised of past hit singles as well as two new tracks. Since the release of their Nettwerk debut album Semantic Spaces in 1995, Delerium have gone on to sell over a million albums in North America alone, and are also known for a string of successful singles, including the worldwide dance smash "Silence" (featuring the talents of superstar Sarah McLachlan), which sold over 300,000 copies in the UK. Other hits have included "After All," "Innocente (Falling In Love)," "Underwater" and "Heaven's Earth."

Montreal's Elsiane - Elsieanne Caplette and Stephane Sotto - joins the bill in support of their debut album Hybrid (August 5), which CBC Radio 3 called "mind blowing."  Los Angeles-based electro house producer Morgan Page rounds out the bill with his up-tempo grooves that continue to top the Billboard Club play charts. The track "Longest Road" from his album Elevate (March 2008) was his first original chart-topper, making it all the way to #2 on the Billboard Hot Club Play Chart, sandwiched between megawatts Madonna and Michael Jackson.

Holly Golightly & the Brokeoffs' first U.S. Album & Dates

Holly Golightly & the Brookeoffs- for the Grateful Web

Holly Golightly & the Brokeoffs, heralded by NME as "a glorious example of what rock 'n' roll should be," has signed with Transdreamer Records (distributed by MRI Distribution/RED) and are preparing their first American release as a band. Titled Dirt Don't Hurt, the CD is slated for a street date of October 14, 2008. "Band," however, is a figurative term for Holly and company— Holly Golightly and Lawyer Dave (a.k.a. the Brokeoffs) sing and play guitar, as well as drums, banjo, standup bass and an array of other instruments. It's just the two of them.

The new, self-produced album was recorded in five days during the middle of a 50-date tour in the town of Gijon on Spain's northern coast, at an analog studio called Circo Perrotti, which is outfitted with vintage recording gear and dedicated to discerning production values.

Their music is a lo-fi stew of blues, country and rockabilly, at once avant-garde and old-timey. As Playboy.com says, "Golightly's songs are so fresh and timeless they could have been recorded yesterday or 40 years ago." Entertainment Weekly called her "a truly appealing tunesmith." And BarnesAndNoble.com deemed her "ready for her above-ground closeup."

Holly Golightly kicked off her musical career in Thee Headcoatees, the legendary all-girl garage band, closely affiliated with U.K. cult legend Billy Childish. She spent eight years as a Headcoatee, and during those years released her first solo record, The Good Things, in 1995. She has appeared on multiple collaborative albums, contributing the title track for the Jim Jarmusch movie Broken Flowers with The Greenhornes, and celebrating "One Chord, One Sound, One Song" with Billy Childish on the album In Blood. Holly also guested on The White Stripes' "(Well It's True That) We Love One Another" from their platinum selling Elephant.

This album is the 19th for Holly Golightly, whose discography is a cacophony of albums (studio and live), EPs, singles and 10-inch LPs and iTunes-only releases. Although many of the recordings are best known to Americans as imports on the U.K.-based Damaged Goods label, several have been released on labels like Kill Rock Stars, Sympathy for the Record Industry, Box Theory, Super Electro and Flapping Jet.

Lawyer Dave had been playing stand-up bass in Holly's touring line up for many years, and Dirt Don't Hurt is testament the countless miles they've covered together. The Brokeoffs have an independently released album Rest Stop, which was recorded entirely at rest stops that were closed for construction.

Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs will embark upon a 50-city U.S. tour starting in New York on October 16 and going until Thanksgiving. The tentative tour dates are as follows and are subject to change drastically:

Jay and the Americans are performing very special classic shows this year.  While one of the group's concerts are always a treat, these gigs are connected to the history of rock and roll:

August 9, the group performs a benefit concert for the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in Sharon, PA.  The Vocal Group Hall of Fame inducts performers from every era of music history where group members harmonize with each other.  Inducted groups include Simon and Garfunkel, the Cowsills, the Whispers….

On November 1, the guys will be performing at a tribute to Gene Pitney to raise funds for the Somers Education Foundation, which raises money for special educational programs.  The benefit takes place at La Renaissance Banquet House in East Windsor, CT.  The contact number is 413-531-6104.  Event producer Evan Plotkin was a childhood friend of the late Gene Pitney.  Gene's career started in the late '50s, and included so many highlights: including introducing psychedelia to American culture with a 1963 hit "Mecca," singing pop songs with a theatrical flair - "Town Without Pity," "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance."  In the late 1980s, he collaborated with Mark Almond. Like Jay and the Americans, Gene recorded "Cara Mia."  Visit my youtube playlist to hear and see Gene performing "Mecca," "It Hurts To Be In Love," and other hits with a full orchestra.

Jay and the Americans will also perform on a classic rock cruise from January 17 through 24 in the Eastern Caribbean. The tour includes The Guess Who, Paul Revere and Dean Torrance of Jan and Dean fame.  Tickets are available c/o Tammy Selee at Harmon Travel: 208-388-3000.

There will be some amazing shows in group members' hometowns: July 27 is the Boulton Center for the Arts in Bay Shore, NY.  Phone: 631-794-2040.

Jay Reincke is based out of Chicago.  These two summer dates will be great: July 18, at the Lake Zurich Alpine Fest, in Lion's Park, Lake Zurich, IL.  Contact: 847-847-2171

The Buckinghams will also be on hand for the Northbrook Days Festival, which runs from July 30 through August 3.  Jay and the Americans will perform on August 2. Phone: 847-498-5555

Los Lobos Announces Summer Tour

Los Lobos on tour this summer- for the Grateful Web

Latin rock fans nationwide are in store for a special treat with this summer's The Brotherhood Tour.  Hosted by Los Lonely Boys who are joined by co-headliners Los Lobos, The Brotherhood Tour will stop in cities across the United States to bring that special Latin flavor for which they are both renowned.

Since they began as Los Lobos Del Este Los Angeles in 1973, Los Lobos has evolved into a respected artistic entity using eclectic musical molds built on the blues, rockabilly, jazz, Latin and their own Mexican-American heritage.  Critically acclaimed Los Lobos has thrived for more than three decades.  In that time, they have released over 15 albums, won the Best American/Mexican Grammy for Anselma in 1984, and in 1987 their cover of "La Bamba" shot straight to #1 on the Billboard Singles chart where it remained for three weeks.

In September 2006, Los Lobos released The Town and the City to much critical acclaim. The album's lyrics deal with vocalist/guitarist/drummer Louis Perez's childhood in East Los Angeles while the music portrays complex and original soundscapes. "Nearly three decades in, Los Lobos have yet to make a bad record," said the Chicago Reader and Rolling Stone Magazine asserts that, "With the exception of U2, no other band has stayed on top of its game as long as Los Lobos."

Since their worldwide breakout three years ago, Texican trio Los Lonely Boys - brothers Henry, JoJo and Ringo Garza - have achieved multi-platinum album sales, a Grammy Award (their monster hit "Heaven" won Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group in 2005), and widespread acclaim from critics, fans and other musicians.  In 2007, Los Lonely Boys participated in Amnesty International's "Make Some Noise" project. Their cover of John Lennon's "Whatever Gets You thru the Night" is the second single from the charity album Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur.  Look for The Boys' third album, Forgiven, to hit streets on July 1st.

Peter Buffett & Akon Announce Musical Collaboration

Akon- for the Grateful Web

Composer and philanthropist Peter Buffett and international star Akon announced today the beginning of their musical collaboration and the launch of a new social action and resource website, IsThereSomethingICanDo.com. Akon added vocals and remixed Buffett's song "Anything," from his 2007 album 'Staring At The Sun.' Starting today, the track is available for free download at their new website IsThereSomethingICanDo.com

The website hopes to answer the question "Is there something I can do?" posed within the song and will offer practical ways to get involved in affecting positive change. It will also serve as a forum for users to learn and share information about their experiences with giving back.

Buffett wrote "Anything," after visiting post-war Liberia and Sierra Leone. Akon, an avid supporter of aid organizations benefiting his home of Senegal, viewed the video Buffett created after his trip and was immediately inspired to contribute.

"This song serves as a global call to action. After my trip to West Africa I knew I had to express what I saw the best way I know how - through music - and to have Akon hear my call was an honor and a surprise to both of us," Buffett says.

Akon adds, "I didn't know who Peter was when we met, and he didn't know anything about me. That's the thing that makes our work together genuine: It's based simply on our desire to encourage people to do something."

The "Anything" remix is the first project in what will be an ongoing relationship for this unique pairing. Next up, Akon will begin work on the song "Can We Love" from Buffett's upcoming album 'Imaginary Kingdom' (out September 9th, BeSide Records) and together they are planning further artistic collaborations around this theme.

More on Peter Buffett:
Omaha-born, EMMY Award winning Buffett has spent two decades as a composer and producer, best known for contributing to the score of the ACADEMY AWARD-winning film 'Dances With Wolves.' It wasn't until 2006's 'Gold Star' album that he added vocals to his intricate ambient sounds.

Buffett's next release 'Imaginary Kingdom' finds his signature lush electronic music and layered harmonies in their most revved-up state. The album features 14 tracks with a socially conscious focus including "Can We Love?," a song Buffett performed at this year's anniversary celebration of V Day in New Orleans, making him the only male to ever take the stage at the revolutionary rally to stop violence against women and girls.

More on Akon:
The son of accomplished jazz musician Mor Thiam, Akon was introduced to varied musical styles early on, and his two full-length albums for Universal, 'Trouble' and 'Konvicted,' are a hybrid of rap and silky R&B vocals. His multifaceted sensibilities and popular club anthems have launched him to international success, with four 2008 GRAMMY nominations and over 8 million records sold.

Zach Deputy Releases Debut Studio Album

Zach Deputy- for the Grateful Web

Out Of The Water (Deputy Records, 2008), Zach Deputy's much anticipated studio album, will be released on June 24th. After years of selling and giving away thousands live recordings, Zach Deputy and his musical partner Paul Kearns are excited to share this studio recording with fans. "At times it seemed like it would never come out," said Zach Deputy. "I was touring non-stop and couldn't find more than a day in a row to record in Atlanta." This album represents one of the many musical facets of Zach Deputy. Fans know that Zach and Paul perform as a duo, with Zach creating next generation live looping, accompanied by Kearns on percussion, to create a full band sound. Out Of The Water, on the other hand, features a full complement of some of the South's top musicians, including Mose Davis on Hammond B-3 organ (The Isley Brothers, Funkadelic, David Ruffin, etc.), bassist Sam Sims (Maxwell, Michael Jackson, kd Lang, etc.) and drummer Sonny Emory (Earth Wind & Fire, Steely Dan, B-52s, etc.). Despite the accomplished sidemen available to him, Zach Deputy still plays all of the instruments on some tracks, and is credited with vocals, acoustic, electric, slide and treated guitars, bass, keyboards, synths, drums, percussion and marimba on the recording, in addition to writing all of the words and music. He also lent a hand in the production, from engineering to mixing, and is the co-producer of the album.

Moving seamlessly from sultry R&B to soulful funk to love ballads, Out Of The Water offers 12 tracks that capture Zach Deputy's diverse musical and cultural influences. A South Carolina native, Deputy's family tree has Puerto Rican and Cruzan roots. Thus, the tropical sounds of Calypso and dancehall rhythms coexist happily with hip hop and rock beats, all forming a foundation for the dexterous guitar work and multiple octave vocal stylings of this talented young artist. Often at a loss for describing his own music, Zach Deputy addresses his influences in his comical way: "I was inspired by Bobby McFerrin and James Brown, but blown away by Ray Charles. I like to think of my music as the illegitimate bastard child of these three greats, raised by Michael Jackson in a beachside shack on St. Croix." Unheard in these references is Deputy's love of old school conscious hip hop, but this can be found live and on the record, as Zach can flow with the best of them, improvising smooth lyrical gymnastics as easily as he jams on his instrument.

Out Of The Water will be available online at iTunes, Rhapsody, eMusic, Napster, GrooveMobile and Groupy Tunes in time for the official release date. Out Of The Water will also be available at select retailers through the Homegrown Music Network's (HGMN) distribution service. Of course, the best place to buy it is at a show. Zach Deputy will be touring non-stop in support of the new release, from the Mississippi to the Atlantic, Miami to Minneapolis to Montreal and all stops in between. Pre-orders are available through zachdeputy.com, cdfreedom.com and homegrownmusic.net. For more info., a complete tour schedule and much more, visit www.zachdeputy.com.
