The majority of tracks on Hurry Up were written by guitarist Alexander Mallet and capture the band’s signature blend of tight grooves, punk irreverence, and freewheeling energy. From the soulful slink of “Bus Station Blues” and “Raindrops on Mardi Gras” (featuring vocalist and keyboardist Rob Davis) to the emotional rock ballad “This Time,” the album celebrates the joy of being alive and the grit of American roots music.
After years of honing their craft, Captain Buckles has forged a sound steeped in the funk and rhythmic pulse of New Orleans, blending the feel-good grooves of The Meters with the Southern drive of The Allman Brothers Band and the timeless Americana of The Band. The result is a record that feels both classic and uncontainably alive—a reminder of why live, human-driven music still hits hardest.
The band’s lineup features New Orleans natives Rob Davis (keys/vocals) and Ezell Smith Jr. (bass), alongside Florida ex-pat Alex Mallet (guitar), L.A. transplant Smitti Supab (drums), and Pennsylvanian Phil Breen (percussion). Collectively, they’ve logged decades in the Crescent City scene, performing with artists including Eric Lindell, Samantha Fish, Russell Batiste, John “Papa” Gros, and Glen David Andrews. Two years ago, they united as Captain Buckles—a no-nonsense brotherhood of hard-working sidemen fueled by good vibes, deep grooves, and unfiltered passion.
The recording of Hurry Up was made possible in part through support from the Threadhead Cultural Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the music and culture of New Orleans.
