After the fast-paced “Under Over” that closed out 2025, Mountain Home Music Company’s Chris Jones & The Night Drivers open their 2026 with a song that turns its predecessor’s classic bluegrass trope — an upbeat song with a lonesome lyric — on its head. “Steal My Today” uses a mournful setting to frame its portrait of a narrator who finds happiness in letting go of the past.
“This song represents some firsts for us,” Jones notes. “It’s our first release to feature Nelson Williams on the bass (including some bowed bass). He’s the newest Night Driver, though he’s already been with us for over two years. It’s also our first time to feature Italian dobro player Paolo Ercoli as a musical guest. He and I have been doing duo tours in Europe and the US for a few years now. Grace van’t Hof and I co-wrote the song, one about not letting the material loss of a breakup take away the joy of the present moment. Grace also played banjo and even added some accordion to the recording.”
Sure enough, “Steal My Today” has all the hallmarks of a Night Drivers classic in the making: subtle instrumental touches; delicate tonal interplay in a solo split between long time Night Driver Mark Stoffel’s mandolin and Ercoli’s resonator guitar; polished harmonies; a memorable melody, and, as always, Jones’ resonant baritone and thoughtful way with words:
A roomful of nothing but chalk lines and dust
Empty just like I’ve been robbed
Volumes of pages, the art on the walls
How quickly that memories fade
With all that you’ve taken that used to be mine
You’re not going to steal my today
Today’s all we’ve got, ‘cause tomorrow’s uncertain
Shrouded in mist, I can’t draw back the curtain
And the past is not mine, you revised it away
I’m taking my stand, I’m not clay in your hand
You won’t steal my today
“Steal My Today” is streaming in Dolby Atmos spatial audio on Apple Music, Amazon Music and TIDAL. Listen to it HERE.
