Futurebirds’ First Double LP ‘Far Out Country’ Out Now

After nearly two decades in flight, the Athens, GA-born Futurebirds have released their first-ever double album, Far Out Country, via Dualtone Records. In a deliberate physical-first release, the album can only be experienced in its entirety on the vinyl edition. While Far Out Country I is available on streaming services starting today, the second installment will arrive later this year, making the double LP the only way listeners can take the 18-song journey right now.

Produced by GRAMMY-winner Brad Cook (Waxahatchee, MJ Lenderman), along with four songs produced by the band’s own Tom Myers, the record is split into two distinct worlds of Far Out Country I & II — a restless, sunlit day and a deeper, more interior night that blends psychedelic country-rock, indie, and something that feels less like a genre than a place. As Stereogum noted, Far Out Country “is both a title and a mission statement.”

Last month, the band released the official video for “Fly On,” where a casual antique store pit stop quickly spirals into a transportive day trip that the band described as an episode of “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”

The album has received acclaim from BrooklynVegan, Flagpole, Relix, and critic Steven Hyden, who proclaimed, “A lot of bands now namecheck Drive-By Truckers as an aspirational model of endurance and credibility. But Futurebirds might be the one most worthy of the comparison.” No Depression called the double album “a rich, fluff-less effort sure to become the quick soundtrack of summer (and beyond) for those willing to take the journey,” while Americana Highways proclaimed, “Far Out Country I & II is an ambitious, sprawling collection that rewards repeat listens, showcasing a band still willing to push its boundaries.”

Fronted by three distinct singer-songwriters — Daniel “Womz” Womack, Carter King, and Thomas “Tojo” Johnson — the band writes in conversation, their voices shaped by a shared history but diverging perspectives. Across 18 songs, Far Out Country unfolds like an honest dialogue about their transition to fathers and family men navigating the tension between the road that made them and their lives back home.

On behalf of Futurebirds, Tojo shared a statement alongside the album’s release:

Welcome to Far Out Country! The expansive 18-song double album, as a whole, feels a lot like a conversation among good friends, taking on the challenges of life and figuring out how to “be” as men in a wild world full of wonder and terror. Equally enthralled by both ends of that rainbow, we wade through the waters of survival. A candid and honest discussion between Carter, Daniel, and I on grief and lost friendship, love as a means of survival, rootedness versus escape, the cost of the road, and the difficulty of being fully present in your own life. It’s three voices taking on deeply shared experiences from distinctly different perspectives.

As we evolved from college kids to family men, so too did the challenges presented to us. Opportunity cost is a theme present in every song on the album, because there are always costs. The cost of waiting, the cost of leaving, the cost of staying, there are always tradeoffs and compromises. However, this album is not about lamenting those challenges, but rather embracing them, acknowledging them, and living with them. This album is about making the most of this life we have, learning from the hardships and failures, celebrating the triumphs, laughing until it’s funny, and remaining grounded through it all.

Despite the opening lines of the record, “let’s take it out for one last ride,” we are a band more motivated than ever to keep evolving and experimenting. We are not resigned to stagnation, and this album is our next step towards infinity. We’re taking ownership over our own lives and destinies, and not wasting time doing so, because after all… The Devil’s real and his name is “one day.”

Tonight, Futurebirds will kick off an extensive nationwide summer tour in Greensboro, NC, with support from Joelton Mayfield and Deloyd Elze.
