Dark Star Orchestra will return to the Greek Theatre at UC Berkeley for a special two-night stand on July 31st and August 1st, 2026, presented as The Music Never Stops: A Rex Foundation Benefit & Tribute to Bob Weir.
Set against one of the most meaningful backdrops in Grateful Dead history, the weekend brings Dark Star Orchestra back to the Bay Area for two nights of music, community, and remembrance at the start of The Days Between, the annual period from Jerry Garcia’s birthday on August 1st to the anniversary of his passing on August 9th. For generations of Dead Heads, those dates have become a time to gather, reflect, and celebrate the music’s continuing presence in their lives.
The Greek Theatre run arrives at a moment when the Grateful Dead’s legacy continues to evolve across generations. For nearly 30 years, Dark Star Orchestra has played a central role in that story, recreating historic Grateful Dead concerts and carrying forward the feeling, detail, improvisation, and communal spirit of the original live experience. With more than 3,400 shows performed since forming in 1997, the band has become one of the most enduring live institutions in the extended Dead universe, offering longtime fans a portal back into the music while introducing younger audiences to the shared ritual of a Grateful Dead concert.

This summer’s Berkeley weekend also marks a meaningful return to one of the Dead’s most important home-region stages. The Greek Theatre has long been woven into the mythology of the Bay Area music scene, and Dark Star Orchestra’s return places the band inside that lineage at a particularly resonant moment: Jerry Garcia’s birthday, the beginning of The Days Between, and a benefit honoring the Rex Foundation and Bob Weir’s lifelong commitment to music, community, and service.
Proceeds from the weekend will benefit the Rex Foundation, the nonprofit founded in 1983 by members of the Grateful Dead. For more than four decades, the foundation has supported grassroots organizations working across the arts, education, environmental causes, Indigenous rights, social justice, and community-based change.
On Friday, July 31st, Dark Star Orchestra will be joined by Melvin Seals & JGB featuring Jazz Mafia Horns. Seals performed alongside Jerry Garcia for more than 15 years and helped define the soulful, gospel-infused sound of the Jerry Garcia Band. For this special appearance, JGB will be joined by Jazz Mafia Horns, featuring Mike Olmos on trumpet, Tommy Occhiuto on saxophone, and Adam Theis on trombone.
On Saturday, August 1st, Jerry Garcia’s birthday, Dark Star Orchestra will perform the Grateful Dead’s August 1, 1973 Roosevelt Stadium show in its entirety. The original performance marked the first time the Grateful Dead played on Garcia’s birthday, making the recreation especially fitting for the occasion. The evening will open with Peter Rowan & Sam Grisman Project performing music from Old & In The Way, the landmark bluegrass group co-founded by Garcia and Rowan. Led by Sam Grisman, son of Garcia’s longtime collaborator David Grisman, the project extends another thread of the Dead’s musical family tree into the present.
Together, the two nights are designed as a celebration of the Grateful Dead’s extended musical world: the rock, folk, bluegrass, soul, improvisation, friendship, and community that continue to radiate outward decades later.
For Dark Star Orchestra, the Greek Theatre weekend is both a major Bay Area event and a clear expression of the band’s larger purpose. DSO’s work has never been limited to preservation. The band’s ongoing mission is to keep this music alive in the place where it has always mattered most: in front of an audience, unfolding in real time, with each night shaped by the energy in the room.

About Rex Foundation
From their earliest days, the Grateful Dead were well known for their generosity and the numerous benefit concerts they participated in. In the Fall of 1983, the band, along with several close advisors and friends, decided to take a more active role in their philanthropic efforts by forming the Rex Foundation. Named after Rex Jackson, a highly respected crew member who died in a tragic accident, the Rex Foundation was created to support small nonprofit organizations doing meaningful work that are often overlooked by traditional funding sources. Areas of interest include securing a healthy environment, promoting individuality in the arts, building stronger communities, and helping people less fortunate than ourselves. The Rex Foundation has awarded grants totaling $10,233,000 to 1,447 worthy organizations.
