“This album isn’t exactly a departure for us, but I’d say there’s a broader musical vision and range to it,” says Chris Jones of Chalk Lines and Dust, the new collection from Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, out now.
Their first full-length album since 2021’s Make Each Second Last, the set balances a half-dozen chart-topping singles released since 2023’s Pages in Your Hand EP with five previously unreleased tracks that round out the fullest portrait yet of the veteran ensemble.
“We have two duets with Jim Lauderdale,” Jones notes, “two songs featuring other band members singing lead, and the first recording of one of the songs I’ve co-written with John McCutcheon. It also contains the first recordings of our newest Night Driver, bassist Nelson Williams, as well as guest appearances from Chris Scruggs and my longtime friend from Italy, with whom I do annual duo tours, Paolo Ercoli, on dobro.”
As always, Jones’ songwriting, warm baritone voice, and distinctive guitar work sit at the center of the project. However, as he notes, other aspects of the group’s multifaceted talents are highlighted in a new way on Chalk Lines and Dust.
Multi-instrumentalist Grace van’t Hof turns in a winsome lead vocal on “It Scares Me Half to Death,” which navigates neatly between echoes of earlier versions by Jean Shepard and George Jones. Former Night Driver bassist and longtime Jones friend Marshall Wilborn offers a melancholy version of his own “Wishing Well Blues,” previously recorded by a variety of artists, including Rhonda Vincent.
Lauderdale, who harmonized with Jones on the hit single “How Small of Me,” returns to play Ralph Stanley to Jones’ Carter Stanley on a pared-down take on the classic “Thy Burdens Are Greater Than Mine.” The performance reveals the two men’s affinity for the music of the new Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum inductees.
Mandolinist Mark Stoffel contributes another of his thoughtfully constructed instrumentals, “Sugar Creek.” Rounding out the new material is the typically meditative “Deeper Call,” reminding listeners of Jones’ masterful ability to convey complex emotion through the elemental structures of roots music songs.
The release also offers an opportunity to revisit such gems as the lively “Under Over,” the classic country sound of “How Small of Me,” and the gently humorous yet pointed query presented in the timely study of conspiracy theories, “What If You’re Wrong”—all singles that earned extensive airplay.
Whether each song has already climbed the bluegrass charts or is being revealed for the first time, the material Chris Jones & the Night Drivers present on Chalk Lines and Dust stands easily alongside a catalog built by one of the most consistently thoughtful and engaging acts to emerge from the world of bluegrass during the more than 30 years since the group’s 1995 founding.
