Afrolicious Returns to San Francisco With Full Live Band at The Chapel

Afrolicious, the genre-blending Afro-Latin, global bass, and funk collective born in San Francisco’s Mission District nearly two decades ago, will bring the full Afrolicious band experience back to the city with a headline show at The Chapel on Thursday, August 13.

The evening will feature two full live sets from the band, bookended and held together by DJ sets that helped build the Afrolicious sound and dance floor in the first place.

Born in the Mission District, Afrolicious became a local institution through its legendary weekly residency. Long before extended residencies became commonplace, the group built one of the city’s most enduring live music communities, eventually outgrowing its original home while earning a reputation as one of Northern California’s premier live dance bands.

Since then, Afrolicious has brought its electrifying performances to venues including The Fillmore and El Rey Theatre, while appearing at major events and festivals such as Red Rocks, Lightning in a Bottle, High Sierra Music Festival, Joshua Tree Music Festival, and Governors Ball.

Along the way, the band has earned praise from tastemakers including OkayAfrica, which challenged listeners to “Just try not to dance, we dare you!” KCRW described Afrolicious as “An invitation to get loose and get down in an Afrolicious space where Highlife meets ’70s NYC nightlife.”

The August 13 show marks Afrolicious’ first true Mission District homecoming at The Chapel since the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The thrill to bring back the full-spectrum Afrolicious party to the Mission in San Francisco almost 20 years after it all began is a dream come true,” said Afrolicious founder Joe McGuire, also known as Pleasuremaker. “Gonna be a scorcher, baby!”
