Tortuga Music Festival has set a new benchmark for sustainable live events as the first large-scale three-day music festival in the U.S. to deploy hybrid battery power across its entire festival footprint, uniquely encompassing all front- and back-of-house operations.
In partnership with REVERB’s Music Decarbonization Project and powered by Sunbelt Rentals’ expertise in temporary energy solutions, the festival successfully reimagined how major events can be powered, demonstrating that world-class production and meaningful sustainability can go hand in hand.
From initial site build through the festival weekend and final load-out across 36 days, the battery systems powered every phase of the event while generators recharged them only when needed, dramatically reducing generator runtime, fossil fuel consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and noise pollution while improving on-site air quality.
Through Sunbelt Rentals’ innovative hybrid battery systems, every corner of the festival was supported by battery power, from the Main Stage, Sunset Stage, and Next From Nashville Stage to audio, lighting and video production, Rock The Ocean’s Conservation Village, artist and backstage areas, vendor operations, and essential festival infrastructure.
The results underscore what’s possible when innovation meets sustainability. Throughout the festival, the system eliminated nearly 4,000 hours of unnecessary generator runtime, while the Sunset Stage reduced fuel consumption by 43% compared to traditional generator-only power.
Sunbelt Rentals’ fleet of solar and hybrid light towers and electric forklifts also prevented 10,302 pounds of CO₂ emissions from entering the atmosphere during the 2026 festival.
The achievement builds on Tortuga’s long-term commitment to creating more sustainable live events. Since 2023, the festival has expanded from just four Energy Storage System batteries to 30 battery systems in 2026, demonstrating that large-scale festivals can dramatically reduce their environmental footprint without compromising the fan experience.
Reducing fossil fuel use also directly supports Tortuga’s broader conservation mission. By lowering greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to ocean warming—one of the greatest threats facing coral reefs and marine biodiversity—alongside founding partner Rock The Ocean, the festival continues its longstanding commitment to ocean conservation, which has inspired Tortuga since its inception.
