Austin-based trio The Animeros will bring their psychedelic take on Latin American rhythms to San Francisco’s Brick & Mortar Music Hall on Wednesday, October 7.
The performance will showcase the band’s debut album, ¡Qué Bárbaro!, out now via Easy Eye Sound. Produced by Dan Auerbach, the album draws inspiration from South American cumbia and chicha of the 1960s and ’70s, filtering those sounds through fuzz guitar, Tex-Mex psychedelic soul and the trio’s Austin roots.
The Animeros feature Mauro Lopez on guitar, Nicolas Sánchez on bass and Nick Tozzo on drums and percussion. Each musician spent more than a decade in Austin’s Latin music scene before joining forces. Auerbach reportedly heard the group performing from a rooftop during SXSW—only their second show—and soon signed them to Easy Eye Sound.
The trio recorded ¡Qué Bárbaro! live at Nashville’s Easy Eye Sound studio, preserving the immediate, dance-ready feel of its performances. The album features 10 original compositions and three reimagined covers, including Traffic Sound’s 1971 cut “La Camita” and the Esteban Jordan-associated “Gózalo Mulata.”
“Mind-altering substances or not, The Animeros might just be the best dance party going on in Austin right now,” KUTX said of the band’s rendition of “La Camita.”
