BoomBox Closed an East Coast Run at the Brooklyn Bowl

On Saturday, October 17, BoomBox wrapped a four-night East Coast swing at Brooklyn Bowl, with the future-funk duo Future Joy getting the room moving first. The show also fell in October, which at Brooklyn Bowl meant pink. The venue was pushing the American Cancer Society's Rock The Pink campaign, and will continue for the rest of the month.

Future Joy, the pair of Emily Cooper and Zach Simms, came in with Denver and St. Petersburg roots and some history on this bill, having opened for BoomBox before. They began with "So Ready," and the formula was clear from the jump, with Cooper on vocals and Simms on saxophone. Simms had multiple horns on stage and started out crushing the alto, then switched over to the baritone for a flip of Green Day's "Brain Stew" that hit with the weight of a death metal song. The two were downright adorable together.

Fittingly for a pink night, the Pink Panther came out for "Pink Panther," and Simms jumped down into the audience to play the tune from the floor. For the next song, the heavy bass "Not Alone," he fitted something huge into his saxophone, and later he brought out the soprano. There was a nod to No Doubt's "Hella Good," a stretch of chipmunk-high sax, and through the whole set the songs ran into and out of each other continuously, everything flowing as one mix.

"When I'm With You," in Megan Hamilton's remix, carried a taste of Beyoncé's "Love on Top," and the "Caramelle As You Are" flip leaned on Nirvana's "Come As You Are." Cooper told everyone to put their hands in the air and then made sure they kept them there. "Queen Bee Danny" brought the bees, "Sweet Child" reworked Guns N' Roses, and "Just Breathe" arrived with auto-tuned vocals and Simms on sax. Near the end, Simms played two saxophones at once with one mouth, then pushed the trick to three.

The pink theme ran deeper than the setlist. Rock The Pink, the American Cancer Society's October campaign, enlisted bands, venues and fans in the fight against breast cancer, and Brooklyn Bowl gave fans two easy ways in. Fans at the show could order the Pink Punch at the bar, with a portion of the proceeds going to the ACS, and every donation made through the venue's link counted as an entry to win two Golden Tickets to a Brooklyn Bowl show (blackout dates apply). Both promotions will run through October 31, so there is still time to join the fun, and the giveaway winner will be drawn at random in early November. One of the campaign's biggest champions was longtime ACS fundraiser Sue Guthrie Harmon, who ranked among the campaign's top individual fundraisers this year. Her Rock The Pink page is set to take donations through October 31, 2026.

BoomBox took over from there. Zion Rock Godchaux, son of Grateful Dead keyboardist Keith Godchaux and vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux, was on guitar and vocals, while his brother Kinsman MacKay laid down the drum machines and live-mixed beats underneath. The set was real bass heavy, with a very '80s feel built on an EDM frame.

After opening with "Closer," the duo dug into 2010's downriverelectric for "Watergun" and "Mr. Boogie Man," then reached back to their 2005 debut, Visions of Backbeat, for "India." That album came up twice more later in the night, with "Tonight" and the band's take on Bob Dylan's "Who Killed Davey Moore?" Godchaux and MacKay also worked in "Moonlight Gel," their 2025 collaboration with The Polish Ambassador, and "Taut Thriller" from 2023's Dangerous Waters before "Tekno 1" brought the night home.

BoomBox will head west from here, opening a short California run at Aviator Nation Dreamland in Malibu, CA (Nov. 13) before stops at the Music Box in San Diego, CA (Nov. 14) and the desert hideaway Pappy & Harriet's in Pioneertown, CA (Nov. 15). The duo will then spend the holidays in Colorado, warming up at 10 Mile Music Hall in Frisco, CO (Dec. 30) and ringing in the new year at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, CO (Dec. 31), with a New Year's Day show in Fort Collins, CO (Jan. 1) to follow.

Early 2027 will bring two nights in Austin, TX (Feb. 5 and 6) and a stop in San Francisco, CA (Feb. 20), then a return to the mountains for WinterWonderGrass in Steamboat Springs (March 5 through 7). From there, the schedule will swing through Portland, OR (April 23 and 24) before closing out in the Midwest with Detroit, MI (May 7) and Chicago, IL (May 8).
