Shakedown Street Honors the Dead’s Legendary May 1977 Shows

Fifty years. It's almost hard to believe. In May 1977, the Grateful Dead delivered three consecutive performances that would become essential listening for generations of Deadheads. Now, Colorado's own Shakedown Street will celebrate the golden anniversary of those legendary concerts with three special nights at the Boulder Theater, May 7, 8, and 9, 2027.

The performances will commemorate the Grateful Dead's historic run through Boston Garden on May 7, 1977; Barton Hall at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, on May 8; and Buffalo Memorial Auditorium on May 9. Together, these three shows represent one of the most celebrated stretches in the band's remarkable live history.

For longtime Deadheads, the mere mention of May 1977 brings back the unmistakable sound of a band firing on all cylinders. The interplay between Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, Phil Lesh's adventurous bass lines, Keith Godchaux's piano, and the rhythmic foundation of Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart created a musical chemistry that still sounds extraordinary nearly half a century later.

The Boston show on May 7 doesn't always receive the attention lavished on the following night's Cornell performance, but it is an absolute treasure. From the opening "Bertha" through "Jack Straw," "Terrapin Station," "Estimated Prophet," and "Eyes of the World," the band was in exceptional form. And then there's that "Peggy-O" — a performance of such beauty and feeling that, for some of us, it remains the definitive version.

The following evening at Cornell University's Barton Hall has become one of the most famous concerts in Grateful Dead history. The May 8, 1977 performance is practically sacred territory among Deadheads, with a spectacular "Scarlet Begonias" into "Fire on the Mountain," a soaring "Dancing in the Street," and an extraordinary second-set sequence that culminates in "Morning Dew."

That "Morning Dew" alone is enough to explain why the Cornell show occupies such a special place in the Grateful Dead's legacy. Garcia's guitar work and the emotional intensity of the performance are simply overwhelming. Fifty years later, it still has the power to stop a listener in their tracks.

And then came Buffalo on May 9. For those who consider the Cornell show the definitive Grateful Dead performance, Buffalo makes a compelling case of its own. Opening with "Help on the Way" > "Slipknot!" > "Franklin's Tower," the band launched into another remarkable evening featuring "Brown-Eyed Women," "Peggy-O," "The Music Never Stopped," "The Other One," "Comes a Time," and a closing "Uncle John's Band." It was yet another night of inspired music during a truly extraordinary spring tour.

There is no shortage of debate among Deadheads about which of these three concerts stands tallest. Some point to Cornell, others champion Boston or Buffalo. But perhaps the real magic is that the Grateful Dead managed to deliver three performances of such enduring quality on three consecutive nights.

That's the musical legacy Shakedown Street will honor at the Boulder Theater in May 2027, bringing the spirit of these historic shows back to the stage exactly 50 years after they took place.

For Deadheads who have spent decades revisiting these recordings — and for younger fans discovering the magic of spring 1977 for the first time — the three-night celebration offers a special opportunity to gather, dance, and experience this music together.

It's hard to imagine a more fitting way to celebrate the anniversary than three nights of Grateful Dead music in Boulder, surrounded by the community that continues to keep these songs alive.
