It’s that time of year again where visions of Labor Day dance in your heady heads. Anyone else feeling sentimental for Labor Days past? If you’re lucky like me, you’ve ventured to Lake George, NY with your krewe/festie flock for the past 4 years making Adirondack Independence Music Festival (ADK) your home the first weekend in September. Any readers out there celebrating their 11th ADK? This festival has been hosting the Labor Day party for over 11 years and they continue to exceed festival goer expectations - yet another perfectly curated lineup for 2026! You see it, right?!
There is no question, ADK is the greatest Labor Day weekend party out there year-after-year; runnin' over the same old ground (Charles R. Wood Park). How we found the same ol’ [grateful] vendors ‘n’ artists ‘n’ ADK crew ‘n’ sparkly humans ‘n’ road crews ‘n’ photographers ‘n’ festie krewes ‘n’ kind folk everywhere. Wish you were here. If you haven’t made holiday weekend plans, you may ask yourself, “What end of summer festival would really rock my gypsy soul - one with a seriously solid lineup and overall positive vibes?”
Honestly, there ain’t no place I’d rather be. Logistically (and intuitively) speaking, Adirondack Independence Music Festival has always made it easy for this east coast mama to squeeze in one mo[r]e. fest before the fall arrives. Lake George is a lot more accessible than, say, Colorado, and honestly, this specific one fills my festie lovin’ cup the most. I promise, like Golgi apparatus, I will package up a short but sweet recap for your viewing pleasure après ADK, but for now I’m focusing on this 2026 densely stacked daily lineup just announced!! IMO, it’s baked to perfection and guaranteed to be filled with sweet tasty jams all weekend long. Also, who doesn’t love people watchin’ and strangers stopping strangers just to shake their hand? So, let’s go! Closing out the first 2 nights of ADK, 2 sets of moe., Friday and Saturday, headlining 2 musically stacked days full of Eggy, Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country, AOD, Deer Tick, Tauk, Grateful Dub, Hayley Jane Band, Funky Dawgz Brass Band, Hogslop String Band, Chestnut Grove, and Capital Zen.
Dogs in a Pile headline 2 sets on Sunday and share “funday” with some of the best: The Floozies, Pink Talking Fish, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Balthvs, Jimkata, Hunter Root, and Hilltop. That’s just Sunday! Stoked for the super groups (Night Zero) and dynamic duos (Gubbulidis) scheduled to rock our Birks off! We’ve got sit-ins we don’t even know about yet, but have fun guessin’! Same as it ever was. Now you may ask yourself, “My God, where do I purchase my tickets?!” ‘n’ “howwwww do I get there?!”
Letting the days go by, let Lake George bring us back. In just a few weeks, Charles R. Wood Park (off of I-87 in New York) will open up its 2.5 acre wing span and welcome us home. ADK feels intimate, captures the good ol’ grassroots festie vibe (i.e. moe.down, wormtown, camp creek, catskill chill), without ever feeling over-crowded. Adirondack Independence Music Festival may seem like it's in its own little world, but it is in the heart of the Village. Lots to see.
With ample lodging options to choose from close to the park, nothing feels too far away. The convenience factor really took me by surprise at my 1st ADK in ‘22, and every year I’m always grateful for its familiarity and longevity. Have I convinced you yet? Yes? Well, let there be songs to fill the [lake] air!
My best advice: Take Friday off from work (if you can can) and get your festie lovin’ selves to the grounds early. Bring the whole family/festie krewe, why dontcha? If you’re a moe.lover (moe.ron), like me, you understand the ticket cost of the ADK 3-day-pass is worth it just to see moe. alone. If you didn’t make it to moe.down this year (like me and major FOMO), Adirondack Independence Music Festival always fills the moe.down void in my heart. IYKYK, y’all. If you’re more moe.curious, this is your chance to get in there and see them 2 nights in a row, 2 sets each night, at a festival that feels like home to the band for several years now - you can’t beat it.
On a moe. serious note, they are on fire right now, am I right? These dudes have been blazing all over the country servin’ up those jammin’ jimmy jams, and not comin’ down! Folks are still buzzing about this “new era” of moe.! Can’t help but shout out to Nate Wilson on keys bringin’ that Leslie sound, those harmonies, the flippin’ flute, and some serious psychedelic mustache prog rock vibes. Turns out that it was exactly what the doctor ordered. The band is gellin’.
Dogs in a Pile is back at ADK and headlining on Sunday night with 2 sets! Since the east coast Dog’s shows are few and far in between, it’s another sign to buy the ticket and take the whole ride right on through to day 3. If you’re into those tasty licks, give them a spin, come see ‘em live, and tell me this: Is their “Summer Tour 2026” poster an image of cannoli’s or cannelloni’s on a plate? Either way, it’s making this italian mama hungry for a lil rock, a lil funk, and a whole lotta Type 2 surprises from Dogs!
Rhodey’s (RI) Deer Tick is so good you feel it in your blood and they’re comin’ atcha on Saturday. Raw and gritty, just like you should feel after the first full day of a good fest, Deer Tick will take you exactly where you need to go. This year’s album Coin-O-Matic 2026 has me swayin’ appreciating the softness and I’m getting major Mellencamp feels from McCauley’s throughout. Lovin’ it. Can’t wait to catch ‘em on Day 2! It’s been a minute.
The Floozies are the current buzz on the fun festie thread I’m on. You know how it goes; plannin’ fits and chattin’ bands! Buzz buzz! The Floozies will keep our festie flock dance party goin’ - because it’s what we came here to do! Anyone else into impromptu improv aerobics dance parties on Sunday Funday? Yeah? Me too. Let’s!
Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country has been making the rounds ‘round this fine country and folks just can’t get enough! Riding high after moe.down (and a sit-in with Ghosts of Jupiter to boot) DDCC is feeling the love from our beloved jamband scene. Cosmic Country performs on day 1 and it’s just too perfect! I’ll go ahead and let ‘em wrap me up in a blanket of the cosmos. We’ll see if I come down for moe. or if they'll leave me there floating in space. The more things change, the more they stay the same...
I have to admit, Grateful readers, I had only seen festival Eggy thrice (having the best time ever, of course), but it all changed on August 1st. I finally went inside Eggy at the HOB Boston post-Phish, and my face hurt from smiling so much. Every friend/Eggy fan I ran into heard me comment, “daaaaamn, that rhythm section is fire,” “that drummer is so nasty,” “holy harmonies, batman,” “guitar player is locked in,” and “holy cannoli, is their keyboardist standing on their ivories not missing a beat?” I may be new to their catalogue, but I’m wide open because the band is speaking my language. Eggy has been at it for 10 years, touring constantly since 2019, and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. This 4-piece has momentum, they’ve got musicianship, they’ve got something in the water in CT, because WOW, friends! IYKYK!
If y’all can’t find Gubbulidis on your magical music players, it’s ok, me neither, but you can find them on YouTube. You may have heard of the founding members of Twiddle, vocalist ‘n’ guitarist Mihali Savoulidis and bassist Zdenek Gubb, and perhaps you knew they formed a duo! The band name made a lot more sense once I put it together. This sweet collab is “playing out Twiddle favorites alongside explorational improvisation and genre-blending grooves, resulting in something both familiar yet brand new,” and I’m not missing it. No worries if you mispronounce the band name the first time around, just make sure you’re there on Saturday for their intro because it’s a good way to find out!
Pink Talking Fish is back at ADK on Sunday and there’s no better tribute band out there covering our favorites (Pink Floyd, Talking Heads, and Phish) like PTF. Yes, they are that good! Everyone loves a tribute band that can do the real thing justice, and you can always count on these guys to do it right; make us feel the feeling [we] forgot.
Grateful Dub is also back this year and guaranteed to have you singing and swayin’ along to your Grateful Dead favorites. Reggae is love, as is Grateful Dead; when you combine the two, magic ensues! Some rise, some fall, some skank to get to Terrapin.
Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe is gracing the Adirondacks on day 3, bringin’ that sweet heat with a high-energy mix of soulful funk, acid jazz, and groove-heavy rock. Good stuff, people! Denson is a legend and has been touring consistently with KDTU for 25 years. It’s no wonder he feels like his universe is “tiny,” the man has played with everyone! Sunday’s the day - feet don’t fail me now!!
On day 2, Tauk is bringing a lil soulful rock/jazz fusion that’ll take us all into our own tiny universes. Prepare to dance and make friends. In the 10+ years they’ve been playing music together, Tauk has managed to keep it flowin’, evolving, and keeping time. Time has been on Dolan, Jalbert, and Carter’s side since they were middle schoolers on Long Island together. The band landed on its present incarnation in 2012, when college pal Teel joined full time. Gotta love a good origin story and a great band to show for it! Hot show!
Assembly of Dust (AOD) is back and kicking it off on day 1 of ADK! Another point for taking that Friday off and making Labor Day that long weekend you know you need. AOD has been bringin’ those good ol’ Americana, rock-infused, singer-songwriter vibrations from their strings to our hearts for over two decades! Thanks, Reid. There’s something so sweet and so familiar about their sound, whether you’ve heard them countless times for over 20 years or if it’s your first time, there’s always a home in your heart for Assembly of Dust.
I’m just going to come out and say it, Balthvs, y’all . The band I’m most excited to see I’ve only seen ONCE opening for My Morning Jacket a year ago and I was blown away! The band was formed in 2020 in Columbia and is clearly on the rise 6 years later. “BALTHVS continues to push forward with a distinctive blend of psychedelic funk, global grooves, Middle Eastern melodies, spiritual jazz improvisations, and Latin-tinged rhythms.” This psychedelic surfer rock takes me to the cosmos, keeping me grounded and focused, dipped in a trance-like meditative state-of-mind. Does that make sense? I kind of love it and I can’t get enough. I’ve already gone through their entire catalogue while bangin’ out household chores and writing this. New favorite unlocked!
Sunday is set up for a dance party all day because I know Jimkata is bringing the party on Day 3. This band grooved right into my life at the Grassroots Festival in Trumansburg (where they are apparently from) a few years back, totally unexpectedly. My ear caught that electro-rock hook and they reeled me in - all the way to the rail, where I danced the night away! How has this band been at it for 22 years? They sounded so fresh! So fun! So free.
If you love that freshie fresh, fun time, dancin’ so free feels, Hayley Jane Band is a must see on Saturday! Get up close and personal, people, and witness the magic that is Hayley Jane (and any project this cosmic sister gifts to us). This force of nature brings her whole self to every performance with spirited lyrics and contagious energy, all while she wears her whole heart on her sleeve for the world to see. Show-after-show HJ surrenders to that sweet flow state, captivating audiences and taking them on a new journey floating in their orbit; all are welcome!
When I hear the term Night Zero, I think of the “day before the BIG show” show and that’s exactly the energy this band is going for; bringing the heat and 0 effs given! These musicians know who they are, how good they are, and how to warm up the fans that flocked to town for the BIG NIGHT! Seriously, this supergroup has some serious chops: “Rob Compa (Neighbor / Dopapod), known for his mind-bending guitar work and precision improvisation. Zdenek Gubb (Twiddle), whose unmistakable bass tone and groove drive every jam with grit and finesse. Adrian Tramontano (Reprise / Kung Fu/Twiddle), a rhythmic powerhouse with jaw-dropping chops and relentless energy. Leon Campos (Dwight & Nicole), whose warm, soulful keys bring depth and color to every note.”
From the sound of it, all of these musicians aligned at the right place and right time & it’s up to us to witness it. Don’t hesitate to get there to dance magic dance on day 2, folks!
The dog days of summer are not only howlin’ for more of that CT water the musicians are drinking, it’s callin’ for brass, baby, funk!! Funky Dawgz Brass Band is here to get those booties shakin’ early on day 1! “The Funky Dawgz are dropping jaws. These high energy horns have been featured with Dispatch, Tower of Power, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Galactic, Sammy Rae & The Friends, Lawrence, Vulfpeck, We The Kings, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Snarky Puppy, The Soul Rebels, Lettuce, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Rebirth Brass Band, Twiddle, and the list continues.” Wherever the land on Friday, the audience is in for a treat.
Whether we’ve got horns>strings or strings>horns, when it comes to string bands you’ll find me there with my hand on my heart, because string bands tug on my strings - my heart strings. Yep, cheesy, I know - and I know that Hogslop String Band is not the sexist sounding band name to roll off the tongue, but there sure is something special in their sound. Whew! Is it getting hot in here? If you’re a Billy Strings fan and/or dig bands that “thrive on crossing genres, casting off the confines of straight old-time and bluegrass, delving into a deep repertoire of rock, folk, psychedelic, and original numbers,” then I think this band is for you. I loved what I heard and I hope you do, too!
Another singer-songwriter worth catching this fest is Hunter Root. As a founding member of the psychedelic rock outfit Medusa’s Disco, Hunter honed his skills on stage, embracing a genre-fluid approach as his music weaves together elements of acoustic rock, folk, grunge, and more. His approach to songwriting has evolved over the years, shifting from a lyric-centric process to a music-first methodology.
Remember when I told you to take off Friday if you could? Chestnut Grove kicks off the fest and they’re here to give you a lil taste of the 80's! Gimme a lotta Talking Heads influence, “performing with lush harmonies, fuzzy guitars, dreamy melodies, deep pocket grooves, and high energy emotionally release. Each record and show effortlessly weaves through R&B, Rock N Roll, Funk, Soul, New Wave, Retro-Pop, Alternative and more with minimal limitations.” *breath* This band is another new personal favorite discovery thanks to ADK! I’m already there.
Hilltop is also another perfect addition to the ADK lineup this year. Rooted in the jam band scene, this 6 piece has got the love and rhythm, so to speak. With great lyrics and harmonies, Hilltop will bring out the spinners, twirling effortlessly come rain or come shine.
Last but not least, Saturday is for Capital Zen; doing what no other band is doing at ADK. Capital Zen definitely has one of the widest ranges at ADK by incorporating funk, hip hop, blues, prog, and pop. “Each song is a unique journey tied together by themes of searching, loss, reflection, joy, and ultimately rebirth.” If you don’t think you can do it all, believe me, you can. ADK makes it easy to set your stuff up, make yourself at home, and come and go as you please. You can do it!
