Circus Mind Enlists Scott Metzger for New Single “Died Too Young”

Circus Mind returns with “Died Too Young,” a poignant new single that looks at mortality from an unusual perspective. Written by Circus Mind founder, keyboardist and vocalist Mark Rechler, “Died Too Young” imagines a soul looking back at the life he left behind and confronting all the things he thought he would eventually get around to doing: the dreams never realized, places never visited, love not fully given, people he could have helped, and the difference he might have made.

At its heart, “Died Too Young” is less a song about dying than a reminder not to wait too long to live.

Joining Circus Mind once again is acclaimed guitarist Scott Metzger of Joe Russo’s Almost Dead and LaMP, returning as the featured guitarist on the track and bringing his distinctive, expressive playing to the song.

For Rechler, the inspiration is deeply personal.

“Circus Mind has lost many people in our circle, bassist Chris Crosby, part-time member Amy Peters, and our band artist and videographer George Panagakos,” says Rechler. “Even doing something as simple as sending out a Facebook invite and scrolling through our friends and fan base, we see so many people who left us way too soon. It’s a reminder that life is so short and needs to be lived like every day is your last.”

Rather than writing about those losses from the perspective of the people left behind, “Died Too Young” gives the dead man the microphone. He looks back at the people he loved, the moments he missed and the ways he wishes he had lived differently—before ultimately turning his message toward those still here.

The song ends not in despair, but as a toast to the departed and a call to the living: raise a glass to those who are gone, then get on with the business of living.

The influences on this track feel very Dylanesque, with echoes of The Band and Van Morrison. On “Died Too Young,” the band turns that musical vocabulary inward for a song about death whose ultimate message is an affirmation of life.

“Died Too Young” by Circus Mind will be available on all major streaming platforms on Wednesday, October 21.
