New Orleans music legend Cyril Neville will bring the Grateful Dead songbook through his own unmistakable rhythmic lens this month with Cyril Neville Plays the Dead, a 12-date tour beginning September 10 in Fairfield, Connecticut, and concluding September 25 in his hometown of New Orleans.

Backed by Omari Neville and The Fuel, Neville will reimagine Grateful Dead classics with the funk, soul, blues, rock, and deep New Orleans rhythms that have defined his five-decade career.

The tour will visit theaters and clubs throughout the Northeast and South, including The Cabot in Beverly, Colony in Woodstock, Brooklyn Bowl, The Hamilton Live in Washington, DC, Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis, and The Joy Theater in New Orleans. The run also includes an appearance at the XPoNential Music Festival in Camden, New Jersey, on September 18.

A two-time Grammy winner, vocalist, songwriter, and percussionist, Neville has played an essential role in the development of the New Orleans sound through his work with The Neville Brothers, The Meters, and The Wild Tchoupitoulas. His music has long moved freely between funk, soul, blues, rock, jazz, and the rhythmic traditions of his hometown.

That musical background gives Cyril Neville Plays the Dead a perspective far removed from a conventional tribute show. The Grateful Dead’s music was built to remain open, allowing its songs to change with the musicians performing them. Neville and his band will bring those songs into conversation with the sound and spirit of New Orleans.

The tour opens September 10 at SHU Community Theatre in Fairfield before traveling through Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and Mississippi. It concludes with a hometown performance at The Joy Theater in New Orleans featuring Omari Neville and The Fuel.
