Dark Star Orchestra will bring one of the Grateful Dead’s most beloved eras back into focus on Saturday, November 21st at The Anthem in Washington, D.C., with a special Rex Foundation benefit celebrating Reckoning, the Dead’s 1981 live acoustic album drawn from the band’s historic 1980 acoustic and electric performances.
For the one-night-only event, Dark Star Orchestra will recreate a full three-set show from the Reckoning era, beginning with an acoustic set before moving into two electric sets. The specific source show will remain unannounced until the night itself, in keeping with DSO tradition.
The performance is a rare chance to revisit a period many Deadheads regard as one of the band’s most intimate and revealing. Rooted in the Dead’s deep connection to folk, blues, country, bluegrass, jug band music, and American roots traditions, the Reckoning era showed a different side of the band while preserving the improvisational freedom that defined the Grateful Dead live experience.
“Dark Star has stayed with us for all these years, and they are not only great keepers of the musical flame, but great keepers of the community culture,” said Cameron Sears, former Grateful Dead manager and Executive Director of the Rex Foundation. “Part of the Grateful Dead culture has been a culture of giving back, and Rex has been the epitome of that for the last 40-plus years.”
The November 21st benefit continues a long relationship between Dark Star Orchestra and the Rex Foundation. Since 2002, DSO has participated in 12 Rex Foundation benefits at venues including Park West Theatre, Great American Music Hall, The Warfield, and Greek Theatre, helping raise tens of thousands of dollars over the years. Dark Star Orchestra also participated in the Rex Community Caravan, offering $1 per ticket from entire tours in support of the foundation’s work.
That relationship has extended through All Good Presents as well. From 2009 to 2013, All Good Presents invited the Rex Foundation to All Good Music Festival, where Rex Jams were held as part of Matt Butler & Everyone Orchestra sets and volunteers collected donations from the audience in the old-school spirit of the Dead community. For the Anthem show, All Good Presents and Dark Star Orchestra are again teaming up to support Rex through a benefit built around one of the Dead’s most cherished live periods.
“Dark Star is always thrilled and honored to work with the Rex Foundation and Cameron Sears,” said Tim Walther of All Good Presents, longtime manager of Dark Star Orchestra. “This relationship means a great deal to the band, and this Reckoning performance is our way to support the cause.”
All Good Presents is also teaming up again with Positive Legacy for a special activation surrounding the November 21st show, hosting an online silent auction to benefit the Rex Foundation. The auction will launch in early November and feature a curated collection of DSO and Dead-inspired items, including pieces suited for holiday gifting. Fans will be able to browse, bid, and support the cause from anywhere, with all proceeds helping advance Rex’s long-standing commitment to community, creativity, and grassroots good.
Founded by members of the Grateful Dead in 1983, the Rex Foundation was created to support small nonprofit organizations doing meaningful work that are often overlooked by traditional funding sources. Rex has awarded grants to more than 1,400 organizations, with a focus on groups where modest support can make a meaningful difference.
“Our approach is somewhat unique,” Sears said. “We make grants of five to ten thousand dollars to organizations that reflect the values of the Grateful Dead community. A lot of the grants go to small groups that are just getting started, working on issues they are closely connected to, where the money can have the biggest impact.”
Sears pointed to projects such as protecting local waterways, building school music programs, creating new opportunities in underserved communities, and supporting artists whose work has had deep cultural impact. “Things of that nature make a big difference,” he said.
For Dark Star Orchestra, the benefit also arrives during a significant moment for the broader Grateful Dead community. For nearly 30 years and more than 3,400 shows, DSO has carried forward the Grateful Dead live concert experience by recreating historic setlists with care, precision, and improvisational spirit while allowing each night to unfold in the moment. As longtime fans and new generations continue to gather around the music, the Anthem performance offers both a tribute to a beloved era and a continuation of the Dead’s community-centered legacy.
“Many of them were fans of the band before becoming an organized musical touring outfit,” Sears said of Dark Star Orchestra. “They understood the culture from the fan perspective as well as from the musical perspective. They’ve incorporated not only an expertise in the musical presentation, but they also understand what the community is about, and that’s what makes this relationship with Rex so special.”
Speaking about the upcoming Reckoning benefit, Sears added, “It’s the first time they’ve taken this concept on. I think they’re going to pay a lot of attention to the nuances of it, and it’s going to be a great night. It’s a great venue. They’re the perfect ones to take this on.”
The Anthem benefit is part of Dark Star Orchestra’s broader Fall 2026 Tour, which continues through September, November, and December with stops across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Florida.
