There are certain nights that carry a little extra weight, where music, memory, and meaning seem to meet in the same room. When Don Was brings the Pan-Detroit Ensemble to Boulder Theater this August, it promises to be one of those evenings—rooted in deep musical history and shaped by a lifetime of collaboration.

Drawing on the wide-ranging influences of his five-decade career, Don Was has assembled his band, the Pan-Detroit Ensemble, and recorded their debut album Groove in the Face of Adversity. The album channels the soul of the Motor City through a blend of steamy jazz, juke-joint blues, and loose-limbed funk—a sound both timeless and deeply personal.
In concert, Don and the band will feature music from Groove in the Face of Adversity alongside a live rendition of Blues for Allah, celebrating the album’s 50th anniversary and Don’s long musical association with Bobby Weir.
Set against the calendar of rock history, the night carries an added layer of resonance—one that longtime Deadheads will undoubtedly feel—making this performance as reflective as it is musically rich.
