Hot Tuna founders Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady will join Jonathan Clarke on Q104.3’s Out of the Box for a conversation touching on their enduring musical partnership and an upcoming archival release from the Owsley Stanley Foundation.
Among the topics will be Rampage!, a new Hot Tuna collection expected around the Christmas season. The expansive release is planned as a six-sided vinyl set and a three-CD collection, preserving a performance from the band’s famously powerful electric era, when Hot Tuna had earned a reputation as one of the loudest groups on the road.
The concert was captured by legendary sound engineer Owsley “Bear” Stanley, whose meticulously recorded live tapes became known as Bear’s Sonic Journals. Stanley recorded performances using a clean, minimally processed approach intended to preserve the sound and placement of the musicians as audiences heard them in the room.
The Owsley Stanley Foundation previously released Before We Were Them, featuring previously unheard 1969 recordings of Kaukonen and Casady performing together before the formation of Hot Tuna.
The forthcoming Rampage! promises another glimpse into Kaukonen and Casady’s decades-long musical dialogue, this time capturing Hot Tuna at full electric force.
