Joe Satriani & Steve Vai Release First SatchVai Album

After more than five decades of friendship, musical exchange and individual careers that helped redefine the possibilities of the electric guitar, Joe Satriani and Steve Vai release The Sea of Emotion, their first full-length studio album together as SatchVai, today via earMUSIC.

The album brings together two of the most influential guitarists in rock, whose musical relationship began in 1973 when a 13-year-old Vai started taking lessons from his 17-year-old teacher, Satriani, on Long Island. Over the years, their paths continued to cross through solo projects and the legendary G3 tours, but it would take more than 50 years for the longtime friends to finally make a full album together. “We’ve been planning this since 1973,” Vai says with a laugh. “Just unconsciously.”

The project came together following a G3 reunion tour that opened an unexpected window in their schedules. What began as an idea to record a single track quickly grew into a full album after Satriani sent Vai two completed pieces, “The Sea of Emotion, Part 1” and “Part 2.” Vai knew it was time to move forward.

Despite their shared history and musical influences, the pair discovered that working together brought plenty of surprises. Each had spent decades developing a distinctive approach to writing and recording, and the exchange of ideas pushed both musicians into unexpected territory.

“The biggest surprise was that we write in completely different ways,” Satriani explains. “And that’s what made the project so fun and interesting.”

Across the ten tracks, The Sea of Emotion moves from the straight-ahead rock ’n’ roll of “Mayhem” and “Bronco Freight Train” to the playful swing of “Zoot Suit Riot,” the darker, cinematic “Old Sins Have Long Shadows” and “I Wanna Play My Guitar,” featuring legendary vocalist Glenn Hughes. The album also includes “Dancing,” a reimagining of the song by Italian singer, pianist and songwriter Paolo Conte, and “The Feeling I Know,” showcasing the melodic instincts that have long defined both guitarists’ work.

At the heart of the album is the three-part title suite, a deeply personal reflection on the friendship that has shaped their musical lives. The closing track, “The Sea of Emotion, Part 3 / Reflections on a Year and a Half,” opens with a vintage reel-to-reel recording from one of Vai’s early lessons with Satriani, bringing the album full circle to where it all began.

“It illustrates just how far we’ve come,” Satriani says. “We’re these two kids who haven’t found our sound yet, but we’ve got enthusiasm. We’re chasing something, and we’re determined.”

Produced with keyboardist Eric Caudieux, the album features an impressive lineup of longtime collaborators, including drummers Gregg Bissonette, Jeremy Colson, Kenny Aronoff, Matt Chamberlain and Mike Mangini, along with bassists Billy Sheehan, Bryan Beller, Philip Bynoe, Matt Bissonette, Marco Mendoza and Henrik Linder.

For Vai, the experience of finally making a record with his longtime friend goes beyond the opportunity to combine their distinctive guitar styles. It is the culmination of a relationship that began when they were two young musicians still figuring out where their shared passion would take them.

“That’s when I really feel, like, wow, we really did it,” he says. “It’s a beautiful coming together of me and my friend in a very intimate musical way. That was the reason we did the record.”

With The Sea of Emotion, SatchVai celebrates not only the extraordinary possibilities of the electric guitar, but also the enduring friendship and creative connection behind the music.
