The Lonesome River Band has long been a seminal force in the bluegrass world. From groundbreaking albums to a lineup of alumni who’ve gone on to shape bluegrass, country, and roots music, their influence runs deep. Now, more than 40 years into their storied career, the band continues to evolve—adding fresh elements to their sound while staying rooted in the tradition that built their legacy.
This year, they’re introducing a special live experience branded Lonesome Like Never Before. The name hints at something new, but make no mistake—it’s also a nod to the heart of their signature sound.
These special performances feature guitarist Rod Riley, dubbed the “Telegrasser,” on Telecaster, joining the band for select shows and new recordings set to be released throughout the year. While not every show will include Rod, all performances promise the musicianship and vocal power fans have come to expect from LRB from band members Sammy Shelor, Mike Hartgrove, Jesse Smathers, Kameron Keller, and Adam Miller. The group will also spotlight their most beloved songs in curated sets designed to celebrate their legacy.
“This band has always been a little something for everyone,” says bandleader Sammy Shelor. “As we approach 45 years and look toward 50, we’re carrying that tradition forward. Lonesome Like Never Before is about honoring where we’ve been while showing we’re still growing—with new songs in the LRB style and bold takes on where the music can go.”
In addition to their live performances, Lonesome River Band is steadily rolling out singles on the Mountain Home Music Company label. The new tracks also feature Rod Riley. So far, they’ve released two singles: “Blues” and “I’m On To You.”
With Lonesome Like Never Before, the Lonesome River Band proves they’re not just surviving—they’re thriving. By blending tradition with innovation, they’re offering longtime fans and new listeners alike a compelling look at a band still pushing the boundaries of bluegrass while honoring its core. This is a celebration not just of longevity, but of continued creative momentum.
